Post Antidepressants & ttc

Hello everyone

Can anyone tell me if it is ok to carry on taking antidepressants whilst ttc? I have been on and off these things for 6 years, since my 2nd child was born (he has autism). I am also quite overweight and smoke! I think my chances are quite slim in getting pg, but as my life is very stressful with my son I was wondering what effect anti d's would have.

We would dearly love to try for another child and we are going back to the fertility clinic soon to start the process, hopefully with clomid.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks

What is the name of the drug you are taking, as I would be able to give you a yes or no.

From what I have just read from the nursing books I have, it is best not to be taking any form of medication, as a dose of any drug can cause termination of a pg. You also need to think about making sure you are fit and healthy, so having good diet & getting enough vitamins and minerals. You also need to think about quitting smoking or cutting down, as this will harm you chances of becoming pg. & can harm the development of the
baby. Make sure you are taking folic acid now as you need to have been taking it for 3 months before ttc. Make sure all immunizatsions are up to date as really should be done once you are pg.

One other point with the anitdepressants, you can not be taken off them suddenly if you want to overcome the depression. As you need to continue taking them for 4 months after you have been cleared of having depression and then the dose reduced over 6 months.

I'd say for now don't worry about the anti-depressants as that is something that is out of your hands and to stop taking them is a long term goal. Look at ways in which you can improve your health such as good nutrition.

I hope this is of some help

Dear Stacyk

Thanks ever so much for taking time to reply to me. The drug I am on is called Cipralex 20mg per day. Some good advise on the health front, thanks. I am looking into going back to a medical herbalist to try and balance my system out and looking into sorting out my diet.

Thanks again
