Default Any advice for uninsured/can't afford doctor?

Hi all, I've been having symptoms of this condition since around age 18 I suppose, and it's gotten progressively worse, with more and more symptoms appearing over time. My problem is I am just a college student and have no health insurance and no money, and no family with any money either. My symptoms are getting to the point where they are nearly making my life hell. I would really like to see a doctor and be diagnosed with something, even if I am wrong about what this is (but I'm 95% sure it's pcos) , and get some kind of treatment but I don't know where to turn, or where I should look for services that may be available for free, or how to find out if I qualify for any kind of government benefit like medicaid.

I'm sorry about your situation. Have you tried your school's health clinic? They should def be able to point you in the right direction. GL!!!!

You could try asking your church and organizations/associations. Plus you could also try a bake sale at your local Flea Market (if allowed). Be creative.

Once you have settled onto which doctor you want to see, then politely ask his/her financial administrator for any options to help with finances. I have heard of people getting a discount with paying up front or through a payment plan. You could possibly have tests run elsewhere for a cheaper price (i.e. hospitals tend to be one of the most expensive.).

Please feel free to contact me off-list for us to bounce around ideas.

Hope this helps.

I work at a community health center where we serve the uninsured. Check around and see if there is one close to you. Community health centers usually run on a "sliding scale" which is based on your income. They usually have PFS, patient financial services, where they can help with payment plans. They also will probably draw labs there, so it will be cheaper. Keep an eye out for any health fairs also, they are a great way to get information and get plugged in somewhere. If you want help to see if you are eligible for Medicaid, you can call 1-877-MHS-4U4U. I hope some of this helps!

I am in the exact same boat as you I think it's just going to take some time and effort to look around our areas and find clinics that can help. People are always willing to help we just have to make the effort to ask for it!!
