Usually, birth control doesn't "cause" weight gain. It causes an increased appetite and cravings, you eat, then you gain weight. I say "usually" because everyone is different.

It really depends on the person. Yes, any bcp can cause an increase in appetite, but usually this settles down after a few months. It really isn't worth worrying about before you try a bcp, because what one person gains weight on, another will find they maintain or even lose weight!
For me Yasmin and Desogen/Marvelon have been fantastic in this area, as I have lost weight with both. However, you only have to read other threads and women say the opposite.
It is to do with the progestin and the amount of oestrogen I think.
I recently found that Yaz made me SO hungry. I was on it for 10 days, stopped Friday due to a migraine, and I don't feel like I'm starving all the time anymore.

I stopped taking YAZ because I could'nt lose weight...I was doing fine until I started taking it. So I stopped and my gyn switched me to Kariva. We will see how it works.
Years ago, I was this pill called Minulet for 3 years and I never gained weight. I recently started Diane-35 (2 cycles so far) and I've gained 3lbs - go figure! I guess everyone and every pill is different.
I personally always gain a ton of weight when I go on birth control. The only one so far that has only made me gain between 5-10 pounds is ortho-tri cyclen-lo. My doctor did say that lower dose birth control are better for those who gain weight on BC. I found that to be true since i gained about 20 pounds on Ortho-Cept and Ortho-Cyclen.

I started taking Yasmin a little over a month ago and I've actually lost 6 pounds. Yasmin is a diuretic though, so it's very possible that this is simply water weight loss. I have noticed a little bit of increased appetite (along with spells of nausea and decreased appetite... but this usually only happens when I have coffee with it)
Yasmin isn't a diuretic, but the drosperinone progestin contains diuretic propeties, hence the increased need to pee and less bloaing on this pill! I only get an increase in appetite during my week off, but it is less so than when not on the pill.
