I hear that weight loss surgery can greatly benefit cysters, but what about lap-band specifically? Since I'm hoping to get pregnant (which will obviously be postponed if I get the surgery) I think lap-band is the best choice.
Any experience???
Thanks!

Hi! I didn't have lapband but did have gastric bypass surgery 4+ years ago with good results. There are some cysters here who've been banded and I'm sure they will chime in soon but the mostly post on the buddies forum under the WLS Divas thread. One thing I do know is that weight loss with the lapband is slower than with the RNY (which I had) so at the 1 year mark when you'll ok to start ttc you may still have a signifigant amount of weight still to loose. I'm currently pregnant with my 2nd post op baby and everything is going great. I'm due for a scheduled c-section (due to a previous c-section) in 7 weeks.
Anyway not that I'm knocking the lapband (I think it's still an awesome tool) but I'm just curious why you're leaning towards the band instead of any of the other WLS procedures (RNY, VSG or DS). Just curious...
Anyway if you have RNY questions I'd be happy to answer them & I'm sure that other WLSers will post to you soon.
Kristy

I have a band. I love my band. I had it placed 9-16-08, so it's new yet. I have a 10 cc band, which is one of the larger ones. I have NO Fluid in it, and still feel full after eating about a cup. It keeps me full for between 2 and 3 hours, and I'm in dire need of a fill, which I get next tuesday. Then things will be easier. The surgery was easy. I was back being a mommy the same day. I was home the same day. I was on liquids for one week, puree's or mushies for 2 weeks, and have slowly gone up to full diet. I can not handle breads yet. They make me stomach sick. Some people can't. I won't mind that... when I can stay away from bread I loose easier. Since my surgery I've lost an additional 14 pounds.

Good luck in your journey! I would highly suggest you research all of your options before chosing a surgery. I don't think any of the WLS options would hinder you from TTC after you've waited the appropriate amount of time. No matter which option you chose it is a huge lifestyle change and not one to be entered into lightly. I had my RNY in June 2007 - and couldn't be happier. Teri has already posted and I know we have a few more bandsters floating around here somewhere.. you may also want to check out obesityhelp.com the people there are a wealth of information... Best of luck to you!

I was banded in january, I haven't lost a huge amount yet, but I know it works for many people. Although slightly slower for those of us with PCOS. Good luck if you decide to go through with it. I also researched the diff methods and surgeries available and believe the lap band to best of all because its reversable and there aren't as many complications.
Hey! I have the Lap-Band...I got it Dec. 08. So far I've lost about 25 lbs, but that has only happened in the last few months because of diet and exercise. If you are really ready to WORK for it, then YES, it is worth it. I'm not preggo...still having trouble. But Hey - it works different for everyone!

Sorry, just saw this thread. I got my band on 05/28/09 and I have lost just over 20lbs and almost 3 pants sizes. I am really working it though. I walk at least a mile a day and am getting ready to up it to 2 miles per day. I eat very little and I drink my protein shakes and water religiously. I like the band, personally.

The doctor said that it is wise for me to get it. I have a consultation in mid august to see the doctor. My mother actually had the gastric bypass surgery, but I will be getting the lap band. I'm nervous! yet excited!!
I have the lapband & honestly it only works if you work it. You have to be prepared to totally change your life. The band will only make you feel fuller faster (& that takes time with fills), you have to choose to exercise & eat what is healthy for you.
I have lost over 60 lbs since being banded in dec. The past 2 mons. I have had regular cycles which is the first time ever. so, it can make a difference.

I've only lost 18 since I was banded in Dec. What was your BMI/height/weight on operation day?

on operation day i was 222 & now i am 182. Some of my weightloss was during the pre-op diet i guess i should have clarified.
I am 5'4. I was wearing a size 22 & now a loose 16 (a few 14's woohoo).
I will tell you I exercise 3-4 days a week. I include cardio & weight training. The last 10 lbs have been very hard about coming off, mostly because I have slowed let more carbs enter into my daily eatting. On Monday, I started back at square one. Low carbs & counting calories...no more than 1200 a day.

Yeah me too. I was 243 at my highest. 224 Pre-op. 208 operation day. And up until the end of May I was STILL 208. Then I just forgot about trying to eat "small" amounts and JUST ate low carb. I workout every day but Sunday - cardio and weight training. Still in a 16. But I'm now on Metformin so I think it will come off faster... Congrats though! You really DO have to keep trying. The Lap-Band doesn't stop you from craving things, which was honestly 90% of WHY I ate in the first place.
Oh, and let me tell you - I haven't felt a hunger pang in weeks because I started incorporating at LEAST 64 ounces of water a day! It's NUTS and I pee all the time, but I feel amazing.

water makes a big difference. Every morning when I work out I drink a powerade zero 32 oz. Then throughout the day I fill it up 2x w/ water & drink it.
Another thing that I have become addicted to is b12! It helps os much with energy.
I have been on met for 4 years now. I am only taking 1000mg now. I need it for my IR. I am currently sticking to low carbs as well. I seemed to let my carbs take over.
Last night I went on ebay and purchased p90x. I need to spice up my workouts as I seem to not be pushing myself as much as I use too. I spent the money I would on 2 mons. at the gym so I am just replacing it with that. I figure worse comes to worse I will just resell it

Hi,
I too have a lap band. I had my surgery in Nov of 08 and am down 34lbs. I also had a complete hysterectomy in March of 09, so my activities have been limited. I was very insulin resistant and weighed 239 on the day of my surgery. My experience has been relatively easy. I've only had two small fills and one tiny unfill due to getting stuck after every meal. I found the only way I can lose is if I eat enough food, which has been hard due to not feeling hungry barely ever. I have to drink at least one 30 gram protein shake a day for me to continue to lose due to the small amount of food I consume. Rice, pasta and doughy breads get stuck so I don't eat them. I can still eat a taco, but one fills me up, which is a good thing. I go to a support group once a month and am still working on eating slowly. I really am grateful for the band as a tool to help me become healthier. I'm off my Metformin and that feels better for me(don't need it because ovaries are gone). The band is slower than any of the other WLS, but it was the right choice for me.

I had my lapband surgery 8 weeks ago and have lost 33 pounds. I have been working hard in the gym and eating right! Its been a blessing having the operation, we only had to as it was the last choice for us with our TTC battle.
Its not as easy as what alot of people say, the things you used to eat you simply cant get down. But the weightloss wont be as good if you dont commit to some excercise.
