I know a hysterectomy won't cure PCOS, I'm just wondering if it may lessen any symptoms based on the fact that I'll be missing some of my hormone trouble making organs....The surgery may be necessary based on many other female issues, but wanted to get some stories, good or bad. Thanks!
Hi! I was at my family doctor yesterday because my obgyn is a quack! (Have my tubes tied- he put me on 1500mg of Met and said if you're not pregnant by Oct. call me) Took the Met for 6 weeks and was getting sicker and sicker and sicker. Went to family doc for a regular check up and he asked what I was taking. Told me to stop taking them - I was too sick. (I am elated to be off that horrid medicine) Then he said- " I'm not an OBGYN but if it was my call - I would say- Hysterectomy." I sat there in shock! I mean- if that is what will fix me and it means no more sickness then - YEAH! But if not then what am I going to do. I don't want anymore children. My Mother in law just had gall bladder surger y and is in ICU and is goin to have to recuperate (sp?) at my house for at least a month. I don't have time to be sick let alone have surgery myself! I know that this is not the story you were looking for- I was just surprised that someone else was thinking hysterectomy an the same day as me! I am anxious to hear from others on the pros and cons too!

i'm guessing a hysterectomy will have you off your feet for a week or two. I had a cesarean and they cut through everything, and it was damn painful. And within a few days i was walking
and a week later, i was fine. let us know your decision

Thanks Ladies, I met with the GYN my primary doc recommended today and I have decided to go ahead with the total hyst...My new doc was wonderful and very supportive of me living a pain free life. I was quite worried because I'm only 31 (I'll be 32 next Friday) but I'm happily married with two great kids and the pain is horrible. I didn't want another pill just handed to me. I can't help but feel that this is the right decision for me and my fam. I go back on Monday for an ultrasound and then we will set my surgury date, which will most likely be at the end of Oct. due to work committments prior. I did ask her if my PCOS symptoms (acne, sweating and facial hair) would lessen and she said yes. The way I look at it, I'll go from having two double wammies (my ovaries and adrenals) to just my adrenals....One wammy is better then two! I've found a lot of great info at www.hystersisters.com My new doc was shocked at all the info I had gathered when she asked if I had thought about HRT, what type of procedure, etc....Good luck to you all and thanks for your support! Jen
My Mom had a full-hysterectomy in March and she was out of work for six weeks, but she is a nurse, so she really had to be fully recovered before she went back to work, so you might be able to go back sooner if you have a desk job like another woman at her work did. One thing my Mom has been complaining about is the surgery has caused some bowel issues, which wasn't a problem until she had the surgery. She also has been having a lot of problems losing weight.

I had a total abdominal hysterectomy last fall and it was the best thing I've ever decided to do: No more pain, No more bleeding all the time, No more being anemic! All great things! It hasn't cured my PCOS...obviously but I've had an easier time losing weight, no more mood swings, and my cholesterol is lower. On the down side, I haven't noticed any difference with the facial hair, but I'm okay with that since everything else is SO much better! My recovery was pretty smooth. I was out from work for 8 weeks (would've been back at 6 weeks but I was still slightly anemic and my doc just wanted to make sure everything was okay). Lots of pain due to the surgical incision for the first two weeks but not too bad after that. Fatigue was an issue until about the 8 week mark. I was 34 y/o when I had my hysterectomy and immediately went on HRT. That's what helped so much with the mood swings and it's been a blessing. I haven't had any sexual side effects that go along with HRT...in fact, sex has never been better. Sorry, TMI! Anyway, just wanted to let you know that for some women can have a great hysterectomy experience. E-mail me if you have any questiosn or anything. I'm glad that you found the HysterSister website...lots of a great info and support there!
