Default Any Femera/Letrozole users? I want info...

Hello Ladies,

Anyone out there on Femera? I went to see the Dr yesterday and he was talking about it with me. If this next cycle of Clomid (150mg) doesn’t make me ovulate he wants me to choose between Clomid at 200mg or Femera.

Is Femera covered by insurance? If not how much are you paying for it? IS it a pill or injection?

Tell me about it. When he was talking about it he was calling it Letrozole and I did not realize it was Femera until I looked it up.

Anyway I would appreciate some info on it.

This is my first cycle on Femara. I did 2.5mgs on cd 3-7. On Clomid I didn't ovulate until at least cd21. But this round I seem to have ovulated on cd14.....so we will see how it goes.

Good Luck!

Oh I wanted to add I didn't not have any of the side effects with Femara that I did with Clomid. It finally got to the point where DH was saying you can't take this medicine anymore. With Femara I only had headaches.

Hey Marie,
I was on Clomid prior to Femara. I did 6 cycles of clomid with no success.... only O'd once on the clomid. I got pregnant on my first round of Femara. I had NO SE's with the femara. My ins did not cover it, and if I remember correctly I think I paid around 30$ for 10 pills (was on 5mg cd 3-7). Have you had an HSG yet? I also had that procedure done the cycle I got pregnant. And as a PP said the Femara buddies thread is awesome, I don't know what I would have done w/o those amazing women.

GL,
KC

No HSG. As I am going through my BO/GYN for all of this and insurance covers nothing we are trying to keep the expenses down.

Marie, I had great luck on Femara. It costs about $90 a month at Walmart. If you call any pharmacy they'll tell you how much per pill. Some ladies have had good luck with their insurance covering it. Clomid did nothing for me and I got pg on my third cycle of Femara. I agree with the PP, I had no wonky side effects. Good luck!!

I just started Femara on Monday. (Two Rounds of Chlomed and only one egg matured)

The only thing I can tell you is that for 10 days worth of pills it was $30.00 It has not made me emotional or moody like the Chlomed.

Our insurance doesn't cover anything either, so we also like to watch the costs. Good Luck!

I have taken Femara two cycles..I took 5mg/day...I did not have any side effects at all. (when I was on clomid for 6 cycles I had HORRIBLE hot flashes). Here is an article that may be interesting to you:

In a prospective, double-blind, randomized study, 25 women were randomized to receive letrozole (2.5 mg for 5 days, starting on day 3) and 24 to clomiphene citrate (100 mg for 5 days, starting on day 3). The letrozole group had a much higher pregnancy rate (16.7% vs. 5.6%), said Dr. Biljan of McGill University, Montreal, an investigator in the study.

In addition, on the day of HCG administration, the letrozole patients had a thicker endometrium (8.6 mm vs. 6.9 mm), which may have been the result of a more favorable hormonal environment, Dr. Biljan suggested.

"In patients treated with letrozole there are a number of small follicles [that are] not large enough to ovulate but large enough to contribute to estrogen production, which probably corrects the hormonal environment and increases pregnancy rates," he said.

Another advantage of letrozole is that patients experience fewer side effects while on it. "Most patients on clomiphene citrate suffer from mood swings, vaginal dryness, and hot flushes, but none of these symptoms were present in our letrozole patients. The only side effect we noticed is tiredness," he said.

In addition, letrozole rarely stimulates more than one follicle to ovulate. "This is perhaps one of the most important elements in favor of letrozole. While with clomiphene there are an increased number of eggs produced--and therefore the risk of multiple pregnancy is increased--in the letrozole group there is usually only one mature follicle, rarely two, and therefore the risk of multiple pregnancy is practically zero," Dr. Biljan said.

Dr. Robert Casper, professor and head of reproductive sciences in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Toronto, said that letrozole's low risk of multiple pregnancy and positive effect on endometrial thickness mean that patients require virtually no monitoring.

"They don't need to have ultrasounds to measure their lining or their number of follicles, so even physicians with very little experience in infertility can feel comfortable prescribing this," he said.

An added bonus is that it may be possible to take letrozole as a one-time dose, according to the results of his latest study.

"It actually clears the body faster [when taken as a one-time dose], which improves the safety profile around ovulation and early embryogenesis and therefore may improve outcome," he said in an interview.

Dr. Casper's study looked at seven patients, three with polycystic ovary syndrome and four with unexplained infertility. These patients were given the single-dose regimen of letrozole (20 mg taken on day 3), and their results were compared with a historical cohort of 105 cycles of the standard dose (2.5 mg/day on days 3-7).

There were no significant differences between the groups regarding the day of HCG administration, endometrial thickness, number of follicles, or estradiol and LH levels.

"Besides the improved safety profile, taking one pill is so much more simple and convenient, and there is also the decreased cost of medication preparation," he said.

Dr. Casper has also done some preliminary work using letrozole in combination with follicle-stimulating hormone for in vitro fertilization.

"When we add it to FSH, we've found we can use half the dose of FSH and still get the same number of eggs. And in poor responders, we can get twice as many eggs when we add letrozole to FSH, compared with FSH alone. So it seems to have a lot of potential for different types of fertility treatment, including in vitro fertilization," Dr. Casper noted.

Letrozole is marketed in the United
States by Novartis as Femara.

I never O'd on Clomid, but would at least grow many follicles between 10-14mm. I was switched to Femara last cycle and had no luck. My follicles actually shrunk, and my lining was ultra thin on CD13. Due to the lack of follicles, my estrogen remained super low and I had almost painful vaginal dryness, which I had never experienced before in my life. All that being said, I would not predict this type of a response for anyone else. Just my bad luck!

I had no luck with Clomid but was able to O with Femara. I O'd late, but it gave me my BFP!Femara is the brand name of the drug Letrozole. It's FDA approved use is to treat breast cancer, but has also been able to bring on O. The manufacturer is able to make more $ by marketing it as a breast cancer drug. It's a pill, taken just like clomid. Femara is having a free trial:

of Clomid seems very high and my RE said that if you don't respond to 100, chances are you won't respond to 150. Can't imagine going to 200 but I know women on here have.Good luck!
