^^ hi .. i am new here.. and i am still kind of confused on PCOS.. i'm only 16 but i was diagnosed at 13 when i started my period. i have always been on the chubby side i guess, but recently ive shot up in weight so fast i am ashamed to admit but i am now about 220 as before i was 150ish.. i'm starting school soon since summer is almost over and i want to know if anyone has anything that has worked for them.. ive tried so so much. and i am sure most of you know what high school is like ; ;. so please give me ideas? >< thank you ^^
Talk to your dr & ask for advice. Express your concerns. There are many diets out there...finding the right one for you may be a journey. Since you are only 16 - a dr may be your best bet. Exercise daily...even if it is only talking a walk. Good luck.

I agree.. exercise if a good bet....just really try and eat healthier and cut out all the fast food and junk food....and walk walk walk....Find a sport you like and try it. I loved to swim..never on a team but great exercise! My niece was on weight watchers at 15 and she lost 45 lbs. I also was 220 at 16 also so I know how you feel...high school is rough...things got better for me in college and after. I wish you all the luck!!!

Best wishes, sweetie. Yes, I definitely remember what high school was like. Make sure you eat lots of whole foods (whole grains, veggies, fruits), lean proteins, and drink lots of water. And exercise -- find something you like to do and do it every day. Talk to your doc, too. It's hard for cysters to lose weight, but not impossible! (HUG)

Hey there Meera. We have pretty similiar numbers. I think the best diets for PCOS are generally diets that go by the glycemic index, low carb or good carb diets mostly. A lot of women try the Insulin Resistance Diet, the Glycemic Impact Diet, South Beach Diet and many more. I know my ILs lost a ton of weight doing the South Beach and I've had some success myself. For PCOS your hormone levels change based upon your blood glucose, so it's generally a good idea to try to keep it in line. For PCOS, I think the big thing is losing weight. Good luck no matter what you try! Welcome to SC!

I am not sure how well this will work for you but... I was dx last June about 2 weeks before my appt. i started the special K diet. I lost 12 pounds in 2.5 weeks. After starting sprinolactone and bcps along with the special k, i was about to lose a total of 40 lbs. You might want to try it, it really was not that bad. I have been able to keep it off so far.
Actually Meera, did your doctor say how bad your insulin levels are?
Mine are borderline PCOS so I just try to cut down on the carb in take. But a lot of women here go much further than that.
Meera, I follow Sugar Busters. Basically, you cut out bad carbs and stick with the healthy ones (whole grains, etc.)

Because you are 16 and still growing I would really recommend that you talk to your Doctor before starting any of the diets. That being said- the Insulin Resistance diet is one that was working for me (took a break during pregnancy). Make sure you get a good multivitamin and extra calcium as this is the time when women need it most.

I would definitely discuss it with your primary care physician. However, in the mean time, it won't hurt to get up and get moving

I've been overweight all my life that I can remember and I've tried and tried to lose weight, and finally at 23 I have found out that I have PCOS and that i am IR so i've cut down my sodas, i drank dr. pepper like it was water and now i'm down to at the most 2 a day and i drink tea and water and i've already lost 7 pounds just doing that. my husband says just think if you would shake those 2 peppers a day how much you'd lose and i know i know i need to but man i hate diet, it gives me a headache and it sucks when you go out to lunch with your friends and they all get sodas and you say water LOL they think your being cheap lol i've also bought a bike, i can only ride it about 6 blocks a day though, my butt hurts to bad, i haven't found me a good seat yet for it, i'm sure when i do i can get after it =) i'm going to go to hastings later and buy that IR Diet book though, it seems that it helps alot, so i'll try that.
