It is a great site here! Im delighted I found it, I was pretty annoyed that we dont have any specifically irish sites. You know? Like we cant compare Doctors etc - but to be honest, a lot of the docs Ive met have been clueless about PCOS. One doc told me it would help my pregnancy :s I was like... uh, ok. Couldnt even be arsed to argue!lol

How are you girls finding dealing with it in this country?

Thanks ! Me and DH (hes my fiancee) met online Dec 07 going into 08, we started dating in March 08 and moved in together in Jan this year, (hes from england) and boom! Straight away we were preg. It was crazy!

We were trying for pretty much all of our relationship because we both wanted kids, but we werent exactly actively trying because we only had a weekend together every month. I wasnt on any meds, had just come off the Evra patch and in fact I put on a stone and half! And still managed to get preg. Im a fluffly cyster so I didnt think I would get preg easily, but I guess it was meant to be (thats what my Mam says at least!)

There used to be a specialist in Dublin for PCOS, had his own place and everything but he closed down I think. Id nearly chat to my doc about putting up a sign for this site in the docs office lol. What helps is printing out info! And highlighting it , lol, it works!

I find that in this country, they dont have a clue on PCOS, but there are a few out there. And if you want treatment for your symptoms, your on your own. I had the hair problem, too much on my face and too little up top lol! So I paid the Hair Clinic and got my treatment done and now my hair is fantastic!

What symptoms do you hate?lol

Welcome Milliew As you can see, we've just found ourselves too!lol.

Oh Karen! I know all about the symptoms too lol! I always had the abdomen problem too, and I had a B-Belly, its where you have a lump above your belly button, then it dips in and goes back out lol. But since getting preg its become one.

I also have balding patches, but since getting treatment for it its been great. I have facial hair problems. Thats about it lol.

Karen! Congrats on the weight loss!

FunkyWoman: When your first diagnosed it is soooo scary and worrying and you have no idea what to do. Trust me, I felt the same. Just make sure your GP is up to date with PCOS, mine wasnt and I had her research it.

One GP told me the only thing I could do was go on the pill, I found out there was so much more like glucophage is the metmorfin the Americans are on. Its used for diabetics.

As for the hair, mine was really really bad in front. I went to 'The Hair Clinic' in town, there are ones all over the country, you should check it out. You can have a consult for free. Its 6 months treatment using there shampoo, serums and tablets and once a week a half hour session under a lazer head thingy, it looks like a dryer from the hairdressers but makes no noise. It costs a lot though, usually 2,000.

Since finishin my treatment (the 6 months) they asked that I keep taking the tablets, using the shampoo etc, but I fell pregnant and couldnt take them anymore. I went to the Health Shop and bought Wella shampoo, its orange and ginger smell. The reason I got it is because its SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate) free. This is the chemical that stops us from growing our hair. The doc might tell you to keep away from washing it everyday, but honestly, I couldnt go a day without washing it (at night, our hair follicles secreate some kind of greasy like substance - thats what blocks the follicles from growin) so washing every day gets rid of that. But the shampoo I use now, I get like 4 days out of my hair! It looks fab now.

As you can tell Ive done a LOT of research on this lol!!

As for the one cyst, that is a little amount. Are they sure its PCOS and not just a regular cyst? I had an ultrasound and the lady didnt tell me anything, it was internal and very mortifying! Its easier to diagnose with an internal one, so maybe you should ask for that. Reading my report, I was diagnosed with more than ten there.

You should try nurofen for your period pain, its an anti inflammatory, and our wombs get inflamed during our periods. The only thing that would work for me was painkillers and a hot water bottle. Mine were deadly, I would be crippled in pain, and couldnt leave the house I was staining my clothes etc.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! There are no gynies in cork really, the one I went to just berated me for my weight, told me the only way to fix my symptoms was to lose weight and stop being fat... but its hard to lose weight, he wanted me to drop 10stone in 3 months. I was too upset to go back. So make sure to find out if your doc could schedule a gyny with a history of treating pcos

Thumbs up Glad to see this thread

Hi girls,
nice to see some recent activity here! I'm kinda new to posting stuff so hope I'm doing this right I've known I have PCOS for a good few years now, but due to the fact that in the beginning I only had irregular periods (and attributed tiredness, being cranky when I was hungry and mood swings to just 'being me') I didn't start taking it seriously til a few years ago. I want to treat it naturally so I started taking herbs from a herbalist but wasn't seeing an improvement in symptoms after 6 months, which before the herbs, had turned into problems with excess hair in all the wrong places, thinning hair on head, always being tired, so I gave in and went on the pill, this time on Yasmin (Dianette gave me crazy highs and lows!). I'm finding it's helping a lot with symptoms but want to treat the underlying causes so when I come off it eventually, things won't get worse. I'm becoming more conscious about regular exercise - joined the gym -, I've found yoga helps with the irritability and anxiety, I try to eat organic fruit n veg cos the pesticides in regular stuff can mess with your hormones (as can chemicals in beauty products mentioned by Shalamar - tnx for tip about shampoo), and now because of getting back to reading up on pcos (good practical book - A Patient's guide to PCOS - W Futterweit) I think I'll concentrate on low GI foods as high blood sugar can cause more complications like gluclose intolerance. One thing that really bugs me is the being tired bit and that's what's got me lookng up stuff today and I'm happy I found this website! If I don't get 8 hours of good sleep, I can be cranky and unproductive. I'm such a light sleeper that I don't usually get the sleep I need Anyway soulcysters, enough about me, sorry for such a long post but it's great to 'talk' about this to ppl who know where I'm coming from. Look forward to hearing more about you.
