The reason I ask is because a friend of mine just had a baby boy whom she named Ashton (he's precious) anyway...that's not what I'm asking She's a single mom and recieves social security disabiliy. Anyhoo we are wondering what happens when it's tax time? Does she claim the baby even tho she has no "earned income" anyway she has like 2 months to figure it out but I'd though I'd ask here, in case anyone has gone through it, or has any kind of idea where to start trying to figure this out.....links maybe explaning the process? Thanks in advance
OH AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS CYSTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am disabled and get social security and yes she can claim the baby as a dependant and she will get a sizable return to (deppending how much she makes and if there is a spouse involved on the tax return)!! Social security does get taxed by federal and state, just not at the same rates as if you worked.
Also she will get money from social security for the baby (50% of what she already gets, for instance if she gets 1000, she will get an additional 500). I get my regular social security, plus a check for the girls.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!!! I have two little ones and have been disabled since March of 2003.

Some people who get Social Security will have to pay taxes on their benefits. Less than one-third of our current beneficiaries pay taxes on their benefits.
You will have to pay taxes on your benefits if you file a federal tax return as an "individual" and your total income is more than $25,000. If you file a joint return, you will have to pay taxes if you and your spouse have a total income that is more than $32,000.
For more information call the Internal Revenue Service's toll-free number, 1-800-829-3676. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call the IRS toll-free TTY number, 1-800-829-4059. You can also access these publications on the IRS Web site at: http://www.irs.gov.

Each family member may be eligible for a monthly benefit of up to 50 percent of your disability rate. However, there is a limit to the total amount of money that can be paid to a family on your Social Security record. The limit varies, but it is between 150 and 180 percent of your disability benefit.
If the sum of the benefits payable on your account is greater than the family limit, the benefits to the family members will be reduced proportionately. Your benefit will not be affected.
If any of your qualified family members apply for benefits with you, we will ask you for their Social Security numbers and their birth certificates. If your spouse is applying for benefits, we also may ask for proof of marriage, and dates of prior marriages, if applicable.

I'm sure she doens't know that the baby can get benefits or else she would have said something along those lines to me. I really do appreciate all the reposnses and info just one less thing for her to worry about. Love my cysters they know EVERYTHING
