Although I don't have PCOS, my ex-girlfriend, who I care about deeply was diagnosed summer '06. I talked to her very recently and she seems to be having a very hard time dealing with it... She said that PCOS is ruining every aspect of her life, and talked about how she has deep jealousy and anger toward girls with full heads of hair (hair loss is her biggest struggle right now)... She has always been somebody with fairly low self esteem and I'm very concerned about her...
I'm wondering if anybody has some suggestions on how I can help her deal with this. I care about her a lot, and I'm afraid I just don't know what to say.
Also, if there are any gay girls out there reading this, and dealing with PCOS, I'd like to hear your perspective too.
my biggest suggestion would be to see if she can spend some time on here. Seriously, just having other women out there to talk to about it helps. Plus, we can share tips and tricks to deal with common problems, such as hair loss.

My best advic would be to to tell her that she is not alone and pass this site on to her, Ihave found great comfort here with women who are going through the same things that I am. This syndrome so often makes you feel so alone and here with all of th cysters we soon realize we are not. I hope she finds the help she needs sounds like she has a great support system since she has someone who cares so much about her. GL to her
Tell her you care about her a lot, and you just don't know what to say. I am in a similar situation as your ex (newly diagnosed, devastated over the hair loss), and even I would not know what to say to comfort someone else going through this.
Do NOT offer to buy her the new "Jessica Simpson" hair pieces being sold in salons, as my sister offered me. That was upsetting on a few different levels.
One thing that has really helped me is listening to the India.Arie song "I am Not My Hair". I listen to it & sing & cry almost everyday.
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations (no)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am the soul that lives within
Does the way I wear my hair make me a better person
Does the way I wear my hair make me a better friend
Does the way I wear my hair determine my integrity
Expressing my creativity
You seem like a really caring & considerate friend and she is lucky to have someone making such an effort to support her. Be a shoulder to cry on and an ear to bend. Don't minimize her feelings or symptoms (I think people telling me my hair does not look any thinner is supposed to make me feel better, when in all actuality it makes me wonder what else they are lying about). Be honest & loving & kind. Things will get better.
Thank you all for your suggestions... Just from looking around the boards a little, I see how much you all support and comfort each other - I am definitely going to tell her about this site. I think it would be a great place for her to connect with people who understand exactly what she's going through. I also think it's completely amazing that there is a board for queer women too!
Thanks for all your kind words, and thank you for telling me about that song, Margy. I looked it up, and it's fantastic - I am definitely going to pass it along to her - I think she'll really enjoy it.
Thanks again everybody! Stay strong and beautiful.
Yep i am agreeing with above posts to ..always good to be able to have some one to moan to and cry to etc etc
