Any PCOS Cysters out there who've had Weight loss surgery?
Hi ladies!
About nine months ago, I had roux en y, gastric bypass surgery to help me lose weight. I started at my highest of 336, and as of today, I weigh 234! Over 100 pounds in 8.5 months, and I feel un-believeable. I'm still losing, and have every intention of hitting my goal of 175 pounds at 5'9, and will start trying to conceive when I hit 199!
I was just wondering if I was the only Cyster out there who'd had weight loss surgery?
I'm also starting metformin to try and regulate my cycles (I don't get AF!) and hopefully start O'ing.
Would love to hear from anyone out there who's had it, or is thinking of it.
Hi Lacy! You're not alone. I had RNY surgery just over 4 years ago and it's worked (and still working) out very well for me. I started at 254 (I'm 5'3) and reached goal of 140 at my 1 year appt. My PCOS got much better with the weight loss and was able to concieve twice after surgery after 8+ years of failed fertility treatments. My daughter just turned 2 and my 2nd daughter is due in just 9.5 more weeks.
Sounds like you're doing a great job in your weight loss & I wish you luck in getting to goal. I remember how excited I was when I reached goal...heck...I'm still excited that I'm at a normal weight! You can see my before/after pictures in my slideshow in my siggy. Anyway I hope others chime in say hi (there are actually quite a few cysters who've had some sort of WLS...but they/we mostly post on the buddies forum).
Again...congrats on your awesome weight loss and I wish you MUCH luck in not only reaching goal but in ttc when you're ready as well. I hope your ttc journey is a short one!
Kristy

I knew there were some of you out there! Yay! thank you Goddess and kat!
Goddess, I believe I've seen you on the OH board under the post-op pregnancy forum. You are always such an encouragement there!
Well girls, I do have GREAT hope from reading your stories and seeing that you both have been successful too. A MAJOR reason for the surgery was to correct my rapidly dwindling health, which includes of course, my reproductive health. I've almost never had a period without medicine, and this disturbs me! I had hoped that by this point...9 months out, and 100 pounds down, my cycles would have returned and perhaps I would start becoming regular as I've heard has happened for so many, but no such luck...YET.
I am still 234, so I am hoping the closer I get to 200, the closer those periods will be to showing up!
I must admit discouragement that they haven't just cropped up yet, but my belief is that with the help of this metformin, my body will get the kick start it needs.
curiously...I know we malabsorb...I'm wondering if I should be concerned about the metformin not circulating in my system?
I had RNY almost 4 years ago and think it was the best decision I ever made! Because of my surgery I was able to get pregnant with my two sons and all of my health problems are gone.

Reason: Talk to Goddess about recruiting.
I too am hoping that you're cycles start to resume the closer you get to goal. I was on the bc patch from 2 months post op until a year. At that time I went off the patch to find that I'd been regulated and was ovulating on my own. Unfortunately because I was on the patch I don't know how long it took me to get to that point. Like you my health was rapidly deteriorating and I had to do something about it. My IR had become full blown diabetes after 4 years of knowing I was IR and being on Metformin for it. My blood pressure continued to rise and I'd developed severe obstructive sleep apnea. My diabetes went away almost immediately and was declared 'officially cured' and I was released by my endo at 6 months post op. I was weaned off of my blood pressure medication and was med free by about 5-6 months out. As for the sleep apnea my DH took my CPAP away from me at around 2 months out and I've not needed it since. Unfortunately for me though my high blood pressure did return at 2 years 3 months post op with no reason. My primary doc ran all kinds of tests and everything came back normal so he thinks it's just a genetic thing as everyone I know of in my family has it. At least now it's very easily controlled at a low dose medication as opposed to before.
Have you seen an OB or even your primary about running hormone levels to see where you're at?

I had my RNY June 2007 and have lost just over 128 lbs .. and feel terrific! I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to start my life over and hopefully be around for my children, until I'm old and gray!! I also hope I can set a good example for them with my healthy(ier) eating and my overall healthy lifestyle. I don't want them to go through what I did growing up obese. Good luck trying to get your cycles regulated - I hope the surgery and met will do the trick for you and that when it comes time to TTC you won't have any issues! Take care...

I just had my RNY March 12th in Mexico. I am down 121 lbs and still have 40 more to go. I have a daughter who is 15 but really wanted to give my husband a child of his own. we have been married 13 years and have not been able to concieve. I am waiting my full year before we even try as I want to make sure I can eat enough food. This operation really is amazing. I have not been this weight since before my daughter was concieved. I am told I look 10 years younger. Just yesterday some one came to my house who has not seen me in 2-3 years close up. She asked if my mother was home. I looked at her strange for a sec then it hit me. She thinks i am my 15 year old daughter. lol She use to weigh 30 lbs more then I do now. Even she has lost 33lbs since my WLS. So I guess with the size of me she was baffled. lol That felt really good!
Teresa
I am having RNY on the 28th. I hope to be on the losing bench in 6 days. I was also told a RNY'er should wait 18-24 months for becoming pregnant. To each her/his own. Good luck.

Well I was told that They would like you to wait longer but that by one year you can eat enought to sustain a pregnancy. I know a few woman who were in their first year and gave birth to healthy children. I will be almost 38 by the time I can even think about it happening. Being we were seeing a fertility Dr. I am not all that worried. It may never happen with out help. If it does happen I will be thrilled. I am just not going to take any chances before my year in case it does happen.

I'm just starting the process right now. I'm excited and terrified. Praying it goes well and doesn't take 10 years to go through this process. Haha. :o)
It only took me 4 months to go from the first phone call to actual surgery date.
