Question Any rants/raves on the following BCPs?

So I narrowed down my choices to the following:

Cyclessa:
25 mcg; the graduated progestin (desogestrel) doses are 0.1, 0.125, and 0.15 mg in weeks 1, 2, and 3, respectively

Levora:
30 mcg ethinyl estradiol, .15 mg levonorgestrel

Yaz: 20 mcg ethinyl estradiol, 3 mg drospirenone

I'm going to see my Dr. but before I speak to him, I'd like some feedback on the above pills. It would be much appreciated - any weight gain, other side effects? Did they prevent additional cysts from forming? Relieved cramps?

Thanks so much in advance!!

Hi bashful,

I can't comment at all on Levora as I haven't taken it. I was on Cyclessa several years ago before I knew I had PCOS. I don't particularly remember it causing any problems but I don't remember it helping anything either. I just started Yaz and I'm on my second pack. There have been a few issues that are common and to be expected, like spotting and a little nausea. My first AF on the inactive pills however was really bad....I ended up skipping one of the inactive pills and taking an active one. I guess others have experienced similar issues in the beginning as your body adjusts to a new med. A couple of the good things, at first my acne got worse but now it seems to be improving, and I lost my cravings for sweets and chocolate. I've lost 3-5 lbs also, but I am not sure that is from the Yaz or what...My Dr. said that Yaz was the best choice for women with PCOS, but everyone is different and reacts differently to mediations. I would just discuss in depth with your Dr. what you're interested in achieving, whether it's an improved cycle, help with acne, hair loss or hair growth control or all of the above. Good luck and I hope you have good results with whatever you do choose!

Thanks so much for your detailed response - it was really helpful. I had such bad luck with Yasmin and now want to try Yaz. I've heard some mixed reviews about it, so I'm being cautious..especially after my experience with Yasmin. But I saw from you and other posters that Yaz and Yasmin seem to be the best for women with PCOS. I'll definitely be asking my Dr. about this!! I remember being really depressed on Yasmin, and my concern is that it's possibly because the Progestin level was higher than other pills out there on the market. So, hopefully...I won't have to deal with the moodiness again with Yaz.

Thanks again for your feedback!!

I take Levora right now. It used to be Portia but the manufacturer changed or whatever.

Otherwise, I've been taking different versions of the ethinyl estradiol/levonorgestrel combination for about 5 years. Never really had a problem with it, but I also don't use it for a majority of my PCOS symptoms (the only real benefit I've had is "cyst" shrinkage, I take other meds for other symptoms anyway).

Only thing I don't like is that Levora gives me really wild and unpredictable AF. It can be light and happy one month, and the next (like this month) I have terrible cramps and heavy flow.

So in short, I personally don't take any issue with Levora, but it's up to you.

I've just recently switched over from Yasmin to Yaz. I was on Yasmin for 7 months it gave me some anxiety and made me very emotional but it did clear up my acne. I just switched to Yaz (just finished the first pack) I did experience some spotting and my acne did get worse for a few days but now it seems to be clearing up. Also ive been depressed since starting Yaz but im trying to stick it out hoping it might ease up. I also have lost about 3-5lbs but I have been dieting and exercising differently too. Today was my second day of inactive pills and I dont feel depressed at all so hoping that will be the case when i start the actives again!

Hi all! I'm new here and am so glad to have found this board. i have endometriosis and was wondering if anyone had any endometrial cysts successfully shrink without surgery? Navi, you mentioned levora and some success with it. My doc put me on this and I start tonight. Are you doing anything else along with this? Thanks for your help :-)
