I met a girl who was a vet nurse who started using Reiki at work and all the vets were as you'd expect, sceptical - til they saw it in action! They saw how she calmed animals with it and especially used it on an animal about to be put to sleep - it had such dramatic effects, that the vets started requesting she always sat in when they put animals down. It got to the point she felt her whole job was being there when animals were put to sleep so she ended up leaving vet nursing. But it's a dramatic example of how powerful Reiki is and how obvious its power can become even to sceptics!
What a beautiful thing to give an animal at it's last moment. I don't blame her for leaving though. That would just kill me to have to be present for that all the time. Ha, just one time would be the death of me.
I Reiki'd my cat a couple times. And might I add I felt so ridiculous. The first time she was unusually still, and immediately closed her eyes. After that though - no go. She runs for the hills, lol!!
Which sort of reminds me of that movie with Nicole Kidman & Michael Keaton in "My Life", where he goes to a healer & sees all sorts of images. You wonder if animals are more sensitive & see those types of things, and they easily spook.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement! I've been checking out insurance--looks like you need a membership with a professional assn to get it. So $125 for the membership and the same for insurance for a year, which is not too bad, I guess. Still, it is giving me pause. For a web presence I've discovered that $10/yr will get me a domain and some easy-start software from google.com. I'm working on setting up some pages with a simple design. I've got letterhead, a flyer, and a card designed already.
Still missing: a table and insurance--in both cases it's a financial barrier. This is just a tight month. (On a side note, I'm looking into online money management software. Anyone have a favorite?) Myspace is a tempting possibility for advertising, but around here I think I might do at least as well with strategically placed flyers because a lot of folks here can't get anything more than dialup.
Meanwhile I'm trying to find times to practice when I'm not sleepy. Anyone else get really sleepy when treating people?

My mom gave me a reiki treatment last night that I'm still buzzing from. I've never felt this before after a treatment! As soon as she started the treatment, I could feel her energy and my head started pulsating....and I'm still feeling it.
After the treatment my mom asked me if I was getting headaches or feeling really stressed because I was drawing a lot of energy from my head. She also said that I was drawing a lot of energy from the left side of my lower abdomin/back. Does anyone know what this could mean?
sgordon, I'm not sure what it could mean, but maybe others here know. I do know reiki goes where it's most needed. I'm one of those intuitive practitioners who doesn't do set hand positions at all, but many if not most others will do and they'll have a better idea.
Hey Leela, I just built my first website in a long time and the thing we realised was that you don't appear on search engines til other folk link to you. You can submit your site to Google for free, but there's no guarantee it will ever appear. After just a week, we were top of the searches for our subject - because another site linked to us. So what you need to do is get others to link to you as soon as you're up and running. You can pay hosting services to do this, but no need to if you do it the way we did!
Search engines have something called crawler bots that trawl through web pages, and then if your site has a good % of original material (and doesn't just consist of links etc) you should get listed on the engines. The other trick we found was to make sure we had lots of key words searchers might use if looking for us, on our indea (home) page. That way they find you easy.
Hope that's useful to you!
Anyone care to share their lineage? (Just interested!)

Anyone care to share their lineage? (Just interested!)
Bavarian, Irish, but I've also been told my maternal great-great grandmother emigrated from the German side of Switzerland??? My bio father was adopted & passed when I was little, so I have no info on that side. But he was born with the name Bryson, so I'm thinking scottish/irish. Hope that's what you were asking! (blush)...
Oh, and I think I've got family in England somewhere - they own either a china or crystal company. I have to ask my mother about that. For some reason Stadler is sticking in my head.
Have another question - How do you guys feel about distance attunements? Or the Steve Murray DVD's (level 1/Level 2/Master attunement)?? Silly?? I don't plan on practicing, just on myself.

What I have been tought is that the other side of your body aches has to do with your mother and the other side with you fater. But I surely don't remember which way it was. That's maybe because I didn't find that teaching very relevant. I guess I have to look back into that.
It's been 1 year since my Reiki I attunement. Actually it was exactly 1 year early this week. And the most wonderful things have happened to me this week and I somehow feel it has something to do with Reiki. I just feel it. I wish things keep going into the direction they are going now.
Would anyone of you be intrested in distant group reiki healing? That would be great. But I don't know how it would work as finding proper time could be difficult as I'm here in Europe.
Here is my Reiki lineage. (I left 3 away in the end as I don't want to share it all and keep myself a bit more anon.)

Have another question - How do you guys feel about distance attunements? Or the Steve Murray DVD's (level 1/Level 2/Master attunement)?? Silly?? I don't plan on practicing, just on myself.
Distance attunement is a very contentious one in the Reiki community. I have one of Steve Murray's books and I am a bit of a sceptic, must say. That said, how can we say distant healing works then say people can't receive reiju/attunement distantly?
Attunements are in fact a Western invention - that came about from Takata. Usui himself did not 'attune' anybody and the symbols are also thought to come from someone else, not Usui originally. He passed his students Reiju (a sort of blessing) every time they met - so it was a continuous, ongoing thing. I studied with Reiki Evolution and they pass Reiju to their students daily - so once you have Reiki I (and even when you're studying it) you can tune in, whenever you want, and receive Reiju. They have a rota of different masters doing it. I think the Stienes probably work in a similar way? The people I learned with have the best teaching materials I have seen - and they do 'live' Reiki and distant attunements.
I started out with a distant attunement in Western Reiki and it definitely 'worked', but things seemed to make more sense and flow 1000 times stronger only after I finally got round to a hands on reiju. Some people say avoid distant attunement because you don;t have the feedback and support you get from a good Reiki Master and that is also true. Although I was first attuned by a friend, so could call on her anytime I wanted with questions, not just at the time but months later - it still wasn't as good as live Reiki.
Of course you need no 'attunement' to practice hands on healing in various cultures, but many people who have worked as healers then, after years, had reiju/attunement, report that they also notice a massive increase in what they can do.
Usui's Reiki seems to have been less about palm healing anyway - more about spiritual development (a bit like martial arts training), so again, in that context, it would be very difficult to learn in isolation. Healing, symbols and hand positions are often the only real content of courses, but Reiki is far deeper than that. You can pick that up from Steve Murray's DVDs. But you'd be missing the point of Reiki.
Another point worth knowing from the get-go, is that if you fall in love with Reiki and want to practice it professionally at some future point (you never know!) many professional bodies and insurers won't recognise someone who was distantly attuned, as being a Reiki person.
NYER I do a bit of genealogy here in the UK so if you ever want some help with tracing your British ancestry, PM me and I'll help all I can! My 'real' lineage is Northern English, mainly Yorkshire (I actually live in the same village my great X 6 grandparents came to, in 1808 and in the same parish and next door to the parish where all my mum's ancestors came from literally back to the first page of the parish records - which puts us around the late 16thC and only not further as them records don't exist.... so this apple didn't fall far from the tree! My dad's ancestors, exotically, come from oooh 5-30 miles away!) All my ancestors are farmers, farm labourers, and/or dairymen right up til the 1940s. My brother and I are the first in my mum's line not to be born on a farm, literally again back to the 16thC. (Even then we had a lot of old farm buildings and a smallholding!) I love walking the fields round here and knowing that my ancestors have always been here.
I got a few Reiki lineages, including one via Hayashi, Takata, Furomoto etc. But my favourite lineage (from my Reiki II reiju) is this one. Suzuki san was, unbelievably, still alive recently (not sure if she's still with us as she was over 110 coupla years back!) She's a Buddhist nun and distant relative of Usui, one of a group of monks and nuns he taught pre 1922, and Hayashi and the naval students. She has taught one outsider, an Englishman called Chris Marsh. So there are some people around with this lineage:
Mikao Usui
Suzuki san
Chris Marsh
Taggart King
Martine Moorby
Me!
So lineages divide into Usui pre 1922, and post 1922, with most people in the West being in a post 1922 lineage. The pre 1922 lineages have only really been discovered in the West in the late 1990s.
Again NYER, one thing worth looking for when you shop around for a Master. If you research a bit first you can find someone who you will be comfortable with and their lineage may or may not be a clue as to where they're coming from. There's a lot of stuff out there that has nothing whatsoever to do with Reiki - crystals, angels, chakras, Atlantis, etc etc so a bit of caution is advisable! Any lineage and any 'branch' will work, though, no one is superior to any other - but some have accrued a bit more Western stuff in their evolution! You should be able to find a branch you personally feel happy with.
You could always go with the Steve Murray for now and save up for a live reiju/attunement, when the time is right. There's a saying that the right teacher appears at the right time, for everyone! You'll know them when you find them!

Is it weird that I can't remember my lineage offhand? I've studied under two masters, both of whom come down through Takata.
I'm also very attracted to an outfit out of Australia called the International House of Reiki, but they will not recognize my LII from another school; I have to either go back and study LII under them or go forward and get my Master/LIII from somewhere else before I can study for the master level with them. .sigh. I've used a very intuitive method for finding the right schools and it's worked out well for me. Still, this school would be a bit harder to study with. Do any of you have experience with them?
(Edit: now I can't find the part of their website where they say they don't accept other LII trainings. Maybe I'm misremembering. .grin. )

I just wish all the time that mine would come on my way. But no. It haven't happened yet. And sadly it has to do with money at the moment. I hope I'll get over that in a short while. Because I enjoy Reiki and the flow of it and everyone keeps saying that after level II it gets stronger and stronger. And I would want to reiki my dear friends in another country, too.
One day, it's possible, I know.

Leela - the International House of Reiki is Frans and Bronwen Stiene. They also have the pre 1922 lineage, same I got (and at a lower cost) from these people - although UK based they provide the same materials from the live course for their home study Reiki courses, so you can study with them from anywhere in the world:
I'd highly recommend them. The course books and CDs that come with the course are very good, very sound. The Stienes' books are the only Reiki books Reiki Evolution recommend, so they are singing from the same hymn sheet, so to speak!

WOW!! This is great info! I haven't popped in for a while, but I really love this thread !! It's always great to find like-minded people.
My reiki lineage is brief - I've only done Level I in Traditional Usui/Tibetian Reiki and that was under a Master at the Academy of Reiki (in Brisbane, QLD, Australia) named Dorothy White.
I struggle with the fact that people charge a crazy amount of money for what is a universal energy. I certainly believe it is worth something to know how to use Reiki effectively and be taught about the history, etc. But it shouldn't cost $10 000 to become a Master.
As for distant healings - I do believe that can work. Just as I believe in the power of intent, pray and manifestation.....I guess the distant healing could be considered one or more of those things.
I am going to check into these books and courses you guys are suggesting. I'm so grateful for all of this information!!
Leela - a good place to find 2nd hand tables are natural therapy colleges. I don't know if you've got one nearby, but I know they go fairly cheaply there. I have insurance through a Complimentary Therapies insurance company here in AUST that covers me for a number of modalities. I have it primarily for the Heal Your Life and Angel workshops I facilitate - but it does cover reiki too.
Just for interests sake - my family lineage is Scottish/English maternally and English paternally. I have a great interest in that part of the world. I haven't been there yet - but will one day. I strongly believe I have past life connections to Scotland particularly.
OK, it's 6:50am here - time for me to get my kiddos some breakfast and one organised for school! I hope you all have a great day!!!
Same for you, Sapphire and any Reiki cyster - if you ever want any look ups for your English ancestry, I'd be happy to have a go for you, as we're on Ancestry.co.uk and other UK based sites with UK records.
Sapphire, I'm with you on the $10,000. Think that started with Madam Takata, thinking people would value it the more they paid for it? If I ever do Reiki III (and it's a big IF!), I'd make sure I passed reiju to more people for free than I ever charged as I believe Reiki is our birthright! But I also realise people have to make a living.

Woah, really????!!!
Thank you ladies & PollySis for all that great info. Polly, you're ancestors sound so interesting! Farms and rolling hills sound like heaven to me. Still haven't figured out whether family was from England. My mom says switzerland now. I had a look at ancestry.com again today (I have my father's info on there because I've been searching for his bio family for 2 decades. He's deceased and here in NY, can't unseal his records unless it's him in the flesh) - I see they're charging now for everything (including viewing family trees). Is nothing free these days? lol
Sapphire - I almost feel the same way - I'm very drawn to Scotland for some reason!! It's one place I NEED to visit someday.
So obviously I'm a novice at this, and need to educate myself a lot more!! So if certain forms don't relate reiki to chakra's, then where do crystals fit into all that, if they do? I have a local Reiki Master here about 15 min. from my home. She teaches Reiki in the adult ed classes as well as her own practice. I've been thinking about going to her. Though I don't know if she does attunements and/or if she requires a formal study. And of course I don't know her "lineage" : p
