Default any success on met TTC and other questions from newbie

Hi All - I am new to this board and in the short time I have learned more and become more confused all at the same time.
I am a 32 y/o married just started TTC
I was on Clomid to regulate my periods (via my GYN) about 2 years ago and it stopped working so I stopped it and went to an endo who then put me on met.
I have been on met for about a year now and have become somewhat regular which was a miracle in and of itself... I have also lost 35 pounds which again - a miracle.
There is so much terminology on this board that i don't understand in addition to medications that I have never heard of.
sorry for the long intro... here are my questions....
1. Has there been alot of success with met and ttc
2. if there has been was the success in conjunction with addl medication?
3. if success... I have read that you should stop the meds once pg/remain for the 1st trimester / remain the entire pg.... any personal experience?

I have a hundred more questions but will stop there.
Thanks in advance and thanks for this board!!!

To answer your first 2 questions, I'll give you some links on the topic that have touched on this:

Cysters who have gotten PG using MET...please let us know!

It DOES work!

Met and ovulation rates: http://www.inciid.org/asrm/rolemetf.html

http://www.shadygrovefertility.com/cevents.cfm

In regards to Met and Pregnancy...The presumption right now is that Met is safe during pregnancy. Many apparently healthy babies have been born to mothers taking it. However there haven't been many long-term studies. Met has been widely used for many years in pregnant diabetic women in African countries where refrigeration is not available (for insulin), with no ill effects.

I have links for different articles on Met's reduction of the miscarriage rate in patients and rate of gestational diabetes in pregnancy:

Metformin and Pregnancy - Gestational Diabetes & 1st Trimester Miscarriage studies

Hope it helps!

I was just talking to a friend whose doctors tried to get her off met during pregnancy. She spoke with Dr Gluek on the telephone, who told her to get back on it, that it was amazing she hadn't miscarried already (having cut her dose to 500mg/day to semi-please the local docs). He assured her that metformin does not cross the placenta, and cannot do harm to the baby. It CAN help reduce the risk of miscarriage and GD.

I know it's no guarantee, but she has a lovely 4 month old son now. I intend to stay on it for the duration of my pregnancy.

Met was a miracle drug for me. We ttc for 2++ years with no luck. We tried clomid, and IUI. I was finally diagnosed with PCOS and IR. I was put on 1500 mg gluc. I got pregnant the first month I was on it. My doctor had me stay on well into my second trimester and then had me stop. I developed GD at 31 weeks and boy that was no fun!! I wish I had stayed on it now that I have read some articles I've seen on the board. I also think it helped me with many pregnancy symptoms like fatigue and nausea. Good Luck and keep reading. The more informed you are the better you're able to deal with questions.

I too have to say that met was a miracle drug for me as well, we had been ttc 3+ yrs, Started ttc in 1998, I was dx hypothyroid in 1999, and in 2001 I was dx with Insulin resistance......My story is like this, In Feb 2001 I weighed 230lbs and I went on Met/gluco and a low carb diet, and started losing weight, in July 2001 I started Oing due to losing weight and starting to get my cycles straightened out, then I conceived in Dec 2001 after losing 45lbs, I had a perfect pregnancy, I stayed on my met my whole pg, I stayed on my regular dose which was 2500mg until month 8 then at the request of my dr went to a 500mg dose, I was checked for GD and passed with flying colors, My pregnancy was perfect, i hardly had any nausea, and for the most part felt great, other than the Heat my dd was born in Sept, then because I had a C-section my dr wanted me off the Met two weeks before my due date (cause we weren't sure we were doing a c-section but he wanted me to be prepared, my dd was stubborn she was breech) I had a beautiful perfect little girl born to us, she is now 10 months old and just perfect, she is ahead on most things, I also went back on my gluco/met 2 weeks after she was born and I did breastfeed her for 3 1/2 mths (i had to stop she got 2 teeth then and wouldn't stop biting LOL) and she is fine....I wish you luck in whatever way you decide to go, but I do think research is something you definetly need to do so you know exactly which way you wanna go. by the way DD was born in Sept, my peroids returned in Oct the first one was 45 days, the next 33 and since I have again lost 30lbs (still have 20lbs to go, gained 57 during my pg) my peroids are regular at 30 days again and I am ovulating, I did exclusively breastfeed but still my periods came!!! also I am now 33 and we are ttc #2 together, it will be my 3 pg as I have a son from a previous relationship DH, adopted him 6 yrs ago. Let me know if I can be of any help to you!!!
