I was diagnosed with PTSD 4 years ago and pcos 2 years ago. The cause of my weight gain was the birth control shot. I went from 145 lbs. to 210 lbs in less than 3 years. When I was diagnosed with pcos, I had health insurance but the doctor would not put me on anything or make any suggestions except for birth control. Now, I fall in the crack of making too much for medicaid but not enough to afford insurance or a doctor. I live in a county that doesn't have professionals that can help me and the county that does have them won't help because I live in another county. I have managed to loose 30 lbs on my own but I get so depressed that I am not able to stick with the diets and such. Does anyone have any ideas?
Bravo to you for losing 30 lbs on your own! That's pretty awesome.
When you get depressed or feel like picking up a doughnut instead of a carrot stick, get on here and talk to someone. In the Diet/Exercise section, you can even try to find a cyster in your area to hook up with. I find that's really helpful.
Also, you don't have to go the BCP route - you can find lots of info about herbal supplements that can help. For instance, I take black cohosh, dong quai and vitex every day and that seems to maintain my cycle. If you can't go to a dr, see if you can find a Chinese herbalist - they're often less expensive and usually know as much (if not more) about the body. One thing I like about them is that they treat the symptoms as a whole rather than breaking it into discrete parts, which is not how PCOS works.
Hope to see you around the site.

Welcome fellow Carolina Cyster! I'm sorry you are having problems with doctors. There are some medical centers in NC, not sure about SC that do research on PCOS. They are free, and a few even will reimburse you for travel expenses. You might want to do a Google search of PCOS Research Studies and see if any hospitals or clinics near you are doing such a study. It mgiht mean free exams and meds. Some require women to be trying to conceive, but others don't. Not having a doc actually makes you more likely to be picked by some.
Welcome and good luck, I don't know about the US health care system so I can't really help you there, but you've done well so far. You'll find lots of support here.
