Hello to all of you, so nice of you to answer the thread...Wshew...don't feel so alone here anymore.
island cyster, where are in Trini are you from?
I'd really like if we can share our stories of dx and treatment here in the W.I....I'm really interested to see where we are in the great scheme of things.

I'm from Couva but I had surgery for my PCOS at Westshore Medical two yrs ago. Recently I've noticed my symptoms returning and my new gyn has me on Metformin but let me tell ya it's hard finding an understanding and caring doc.
No I'm not Trini but I am Jamaican. I have a question for all you island gals. I have been trying to lose weight for some time now and find it hard because I love Jamaican food. Which means a lot of rice, fried dumplin' and other high fat foods. Most diet plans do not take ethnic food into consideration when they are created. Has anyone been able to find any success on a diet of "life style change" where you can stilleat these type of foods?
UGH I'm Bajan and rice is my down fall. I love it I could eat it everyday...several times a day.
The best thing that I can suggest besides cutting back how many times a week you have have it, cut your portions down and also switch to brown rice.
Eat more lean meats and seafood.
Easy on the oils...and the fried foods...extreme moderation if that doesn't sound silly.
Instead of fried try grilled, or baked...Iknow it doesn't taste quite as good but you'll adjust.
I grill plantian in a George Foreman Grill instead of frying...the ripe ones of course. I boil the green ones...I know I know not as much fun but it can be as tasty use spices and less salt.

Hey I'm from Couva too!
I totally share your sentiment about not being able to find a good doctor.
I'm still looking...
I was able to lose some weight recently, it was a challenge though cuz like all West Indians we love food!
I had to cut back on the rice and flour and cut out the softdrinks. I exercised more and tried eating more veggies and the results were encouraging.
I understand that boiled green figs are supposed to be low fat and a nice option boiled and fried in some olive oil with onions and peppers...you know how we like it!
Use more olive oil instead of soyabean or vegetable oil, using provisions like sweet potatoes is better than the rice and try eating more lean meat, chicken breast is always a winner.
I'll post more suggestions as I remember them, I love food and I love to cook but PCOS is definitely a challenge when you love food so I'm always looking at healthy ways to make delicious food.
