I'm going to start south beach diet as soon as my book arrives. Any other ttcers on this diet? Is it safe while ttc? Has it helped ovulation/cycles? Thanks ladies!

I'm debating trying it too so I'm wondering the same thing. I've been told not to wait to TTC by my DR so that's first and foremost with me. I do have better chances though if I can lose about 10-15 lbs. Hmm....Anyone out there tried this?

Well, I've done some research and it's A-ok while ttc, just when pregnant, you need to move to phase 2 (but phase 1 is only 2 weeks anyway). It's safe to continue while pregnant. I've read the book today and am loving the way this 'diet' sounds. It seems it will be quite easy to maintain. I'm looking forward to starting tomorrow. The interesting thing is the diet specifically targets insulin resistance, so perfect for us cysters. And the dr who wrote the book reckons you'll lose between 9 and 13 lbs in the first phase (14 days). I'm actually surprised there's not much mention of south beach when i searched the forum.

I would like to switch to South Beach, my RE told me to follow Atkins to "arrest" the IR thereby reducing the chance of miscarriage which is an issue with PCOS. He said once I get pregnant I will need to add more carbs as babies need them!!

I was tossing up between south beach and atkins...until I read all the bad about atkins (wiki is a good start to find the bad about it...). Have you started atkins drphobic?

Still considering. Once pregnant I'm a high risker for several other reasons, not just PCOS...If I give it a try I'll probably have to go to a nutritionist for my pg anyway. Atkins is aweful for your body though...I don't recommend that one at all. My brother did South Beach with pretty good success. I'm just at the point where I guess I don't believe I'm able to lose weight...and won't be until I get my PCOS under control. FTR though my insulin doesn't seem to be the problem...my hormonal imbalances seem to be the bulk of it. I'm thinking I'll give SB a look into though as my brother has encouraged me too (he doesn't know about the medical problems behind my weight). He's thinking to motivate me to lay off the cookies...he just doesn't realize I don't eat any anyway lol. Let me know how you're liking it...I hear the first 2 wks are hard but that it gets a lot better from there. Would like to hear how other PCOSers are doing on it.

abbiedarlin1- I have started Atkins but I cheated with extra vegetables. So I guess you could say I was on a variation of the two. It is strange, I always ate healthy - brown rice, steamed veges, lean meat. I guess the hidden carbs were the problem for me...and skipping breakfast. I had to make myself eat sometimes. I have had great success so far. The first week was tough, but that was overshadowed by my increased energy and the fact I was NEVER hungry.....Good Luck to you all!!!

I've done it before and had success with it. The first two weeks are a challenge, but really do help to jumpstart things. I found it hard to work out at my normal intensity (which is high) during phase I, but I don't think even that would be a problem with moderate exercise.
Overall, it's a very sustainable eating plan. Take the opportunity to learn from your body and the cues it's giving you about hunger and satiety. I think that was one of the best lessons from it. I need less than I thought I did to be satfied.

I have been mostly following SB for a couple months now, since shortly after I was diagnosed. I am not completely strict about it, especially over Thanksgiving weekend, but I think it's been good for me. Still no bfp, but in general I feel better.
Well, I did day 1 of phase 1 today....and it was horrible. I followed one of the meal plans in the book, and ended up with a massive headache, no energy at all and shaky. I nearly passed out a few times because of the blood sugar dips. And the cravings...oh lord. I need bread! I am considering skipping to phase 2 straight away because I can't live like this, and I want to add exercise, but have no energy. erg...

I was doing it as part of my last cycle, I wanted to lose about 10lbs and figured it would also help with the PCOS......it turned out to the worst cycle I've had yet, a total bust. Could be a fluke, but that was my experience....

I did SB and it works. I started it at the beginning of the year and lost 12 lbs the first two weeks. I lost 20 total I found it to be really easy. The only reason I quit was I got a bfp and morning sickness set in - leading to more carb intakes. After that l miscarried, and a bit of depression set in.
I recently got another bfp and just had my 3rd m/c. I got on the scale this morning and have gained back 14 of the 20lbs I lost. Needless to say I'm back on it again.
Abbie - I'd hang in there on Phase 1 - your body truly needs it to reset itself. It is hard the first few days, but after about day 3 your body finally rids itself of its sugar addiction and that's when the weight starts falling off. If you need something sweet, I would often eat sugar free popsicles (15 calories each) or SF pudding, fudge bars, etc. Just limit those to 100 calories or less per day.
SB, in my opinion, is far better than Atkins. After the first two weeks you can start adding back in whole grains and fruit which I don't think Atkins is a fan of. SB is much better for a lifestyle change.
Good luck!

I totally agree, hang in there Abbie. It's really hard for the first few days, but after that initial "sugar detox" you won't believe how good you feel. You don't need bread. When you move on to phase 2 it's also important to add in the fruits and whole grains gradually. I'd recommend holding off on adding bread back in until you've had a chance to bserve how you react to oatmeal, bananas, brown rice, etc. You can do it!
