I have a question that I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or could lead me in the right direction! I was diagnosed with PCOS May 2003 and started on 850mgs upped to 1700 mgs of metformin. I am 5'2" and weigh 92 pounds because I have a very fast metabolism....therefore, weight loss is not something I need (which as you know, metformin really sends your stomach out of control sometimes). Is there anyone at all out there that is an underweight PCOS-er....I have tried for about 2 yrs to gain weight but just burn all calories...I am healthy--as far as I have had a normal MP (b/c of the metformin and dexamethasone) for the last 3 months and all PCOS external symtoms have all but disappeared (acne, very mild facial hair under chin-etc.) but I guess my biggest question is....with all the PCOS books out there with all the weight loss suggestions, meal plans etc. etc. etc....i am looking for a menu or diet plan that will target not necessarily gaining weight (since at this point it seems to be an impossibility for me) but eating GOOD healthy foods that will not react or cause my insulin levels to raise etc. Does that make sense? I know that in the PCOS books etc. they talk about eating the right amounts of carbs, fats, etc...I don't need weight loss so I don't want to eat foods that will make me lose weight as much as I want to eat foods that will benefit and help (if that is possible) insulin levels with the PCOS! Sorry for any confusion! Write me back if you have any suggestions!! Thanks!!!

Although the IR Diet has helped a lot of us lose weight, it's a very good and sensible way to eat healthy. Or, any diabetic eating plan would also help avoid spikes and such. Look to the food pyramid, and keep balance in your diet and hopefully you will find what you are needing.
Good luck!

The IR diet sounds perfect for you, because people on it will only lose weight if their weight gain was a result of high levels of circulating insulin. And every pcos lady can benefit her body by eliminating insulin spikes.
You can read the first two chapters of the book here:
33 yrs, 1 precious hubby, 2 miracle kids, At Goal Wt for 4 yrs, Trygly's down 445 pts, Free Androgen down from 20 to 2, 3 half 'thons ran, 2 mtns hiked, 1 crazy run in the Rockies, 4 forest trail races, profiled in 2 magazines...1 woman determined to kick PCOS butt!

I just want to suggest that you talk to your doc about switching you to Avandia instead of Met. Avandia works in similiar ways to Met, but it doesn't have the gastro side effects and it can actually cause weight gain. Just a thought.

I am a thin cyster and use the IR diet. It has not really caused me to lose weight maybe a few pounds with the addition of Avandia. I actually think this was mostly water weight though since I also quit the bc pill. I love the IR diet because I can eat almost all my favorite foods and I am not limited by the diet. I just move it around to fit into place. I highly recommend the book and feel it is an excellent way to help control insulin. I wish my diabetic father would try it instead of the diet his doctor uses.
I am taking avandia and have absolutely no GI symptoms. My RE prefers it for thin women who don't necessarily test IR. She still feels we have insulin issues though, probably genetic. Who knows, I just know I feel great and hope it continues. I am due for AF in a couple weeks. Proof will be there if I actually get this on my own.
Make sure you post on the thin cyster board. There are many ladies there asking similar questions. Do a search and see what comes up. I know there was once a thread talking about how to gain weight and ways to treat their PCOS when they can't keep the weight on. You're not alone here!
Good Luck!!!
