Hullo. Ive been battling depression since I was 14 but just last year (about the same time I noticed what seems to be pcos-related acne, hairiness etc) I began getting panic attacks. I'm taking xanax when they are really bad. I'm just wondering if the panic attacks could be a part of the pcos?
Hi hun. I know what you are going through and it is not a good feeling....*hugs*
I believe that panic attacks can be considered a part of PCOS. Depression and anxiety are a part of PCOS and anxiety is what causes a panic attack to take place. I have experienced many panic attacks...and they are terrible. Right now I am on 40 mg of paxil and it seems to be working. I hope your treatment works for you as well.
We are here for you hun!

I've never had a full blown panic attack, but I use to suffer from severe anxiety attacks.
I say *use to* because since I have been low carbing to help control other PCOS symptoms I have been anxiety free!!

I have also have full blown panic attacks - not fun at all. I am on 37.5mg of Paxil and it does help. I have had them since I was about 12 - I just got on meds a year ago because I realized I do not want my child to see my like that.
Although my dr. says it is not related to PCOS - I believe it is.

thanks for your replies!
I am also worried about having kids one day- it would be terrible for them to see me having a full blown attack. I'm taking avanza for depression too but xanax is the only thing that makes the attacks manageable. They usually only last an hour if I take the xanax quick enough.
Bless you. I know how miserable they make you feel, and scared too. Try to deep breathe after you take your xanax, of course. Focus on a happy "place" or event. I know easier said than done but and these things will not make them go away, but they do make them not feel as frightening. I think anytime you have an illness with a hormonal imbalances you will find that other types of hormones are out of synch as well. Anxiety/panic attacks, depression are a type of hormonal imbalance. But, we're here for you too. We understand. Anytime you need to "talk" give us a holler. Lendi

I've had panic attacks too! I was prescribed prozac then oxazepam. The oxazepam worked for me! I also read the anxiety-phobia workbook and it was great! It reassures you so all those bad feelings will go away. I haven't had a panic attack almost since I got it. I'm no longer on meds either.
you cysters rock!
I've been having counselling and it's been great. When you are explained the physical process of panic they are easier to handle I have found, because you can can control them better and sometimes shorten their duration. The only times I cant control my attacks seem to be the ones right before my period and the ones that are preceded by a couple of hours dizziness/vertigo and a racing heartbeat then my thoughts just go out the window and it's xanax time!
I am so glad I checked out this link about panic attacks. I hope I am responding in the correct area. Can someone explain how low carbing can curb panic attacks. I am surffering all of a sudden from panic attacks. My husband even made me go to the ER a few weeks ago, I've never had one. He thinks I am a basket case, which I sort of am lately. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

I have been having very bad panic attacks lately. It really has began to worry me because when I start to panic, I feel my heart flutter. I get this overwhelming sense of fear. It is hard to explain. I especially do this while I am riding in the car with someone else. I dont when I drive but when someone else is, I tend to hold on to the door handle, lock the door and when we are in a traffic jam, I tend to put my head down so I dont have to see the traffic. I also am really paranoid about crowded places. I am scared to death of someone bombing the place or something. I have taken Zoloft for depression but nothing for panic. The zoloft made me worse off than I was in the first place. My Dh is constantly on to me because when I start panicing, he starts getting nervous. Especially in the car.. What should I do?
I don't take any medication myself for them, and I hope the meds you take do work for you. Panic attacks aren't very fun and I have been uber stressed lately so that doesn't help.
The physical side of them can be very scary, and I can control them myself abit. I am a very claustrophobic person so mine get worse if I have to been in a crowded place.
The endocrine system is pretty complex but all the organs, their hormones and their hormonal receptors are linked in a relationship which helps them all to function properly. Like an eco system I suppose. If we are IR, then we produce too much insulin. This would throw out the delicate balance which exists causing the differnt hormonal levels to change. I am sure that this would have an adverse effect on the brain, and would cause panic attacks..Anyone read anything about this? I am not sure how it works so don't quote me on this but it's something you should check out.
