Default Anybody have natural periods again after quitting BCP?

Or was it just me who lost all natural periods after quitting the Pill? As a teen, I usually had one period a year. So my doctor put me on the pill when I was eighteen. Since then, I've been completely off the pill for years at a time, but I've not had a natural period since. I think the pill made the underlying problem worse.

Before I started on the pill a few years back my periods were really irregular but they were there. I came off BCP last september and was diagnosed with PCOS in April after they decided to do a dissapearing act since my last pack of BCP. Still haven't had a natural period (but I'm back on BCP now) so you're not the only one.

mine came back after about a year of nothing. but they were irregular, ranging between 6-8 weeks so they put me back on bcp now after being off of them for about 2 years. i really didn't like the idea of going back on because i was always suspicious that bcp were a big factor in the pcos, but there weren't a whole lot of other options. so, bcp it is, for the foreseeable future.

The first time i quit BCP after 7 yrs of taking it,it took 1 year to get a period. After about 2 years they were the most reg I have ever been-every 35 or so days.I got pg with my first child after 6 wks of trying.Went back on BCP after him-took for about 2 yrs.It took 6 mo to get a period after stopping. My body totally rebelled-major PCOS symptoms. It took me 1.5 yrs to concieve my daughter.Didnt take pill after. Was good for about 1.5 yr after i had her then once again big time PCOS symptoms. She is going to be 4 in Dec and i just started my 5th wk of Yasmin and I feel great! No bloat, lost some belly weight, grew a cup size in my boobs and best of all-my hairloss seems to be tapering.I'll see how it goes...

The only time I got natural cycles after BCP's was when I stopped Yaz this yr. I had been on Yaz for 3 months. I actually had 2 AF's within 32 days of each other and the 2nd one I went back on clomid and I got pregnant!

Nope, I have never been regular since I started my period at age 11. Without bc, I could go a year or longer without having a period. I came off Yasmin in May (script ran out) and didn't have a period at all during those 2 months I waited before getting on Yaz.

I went off of Desogen in July. I had a period in August and this month. I thought that I wasn't going to have one this month but it came yesterday. I've lost 60 pounds since my weight loss surgery in May. I still need to lose another 90 but this has helped so far.

I did, but this was several years ago when I was still a teen, still a very healthy weight and before I had any symptoms or incling of having PCOS. I stopped taking them in 2001, I think it was, because I was getting break through bleeding a lot and I just didn't want to take them anymore. Then I had regular cycles from the time I stopped for about two years, then I missed one or two periods and had regular cycles again until mid 2004 when they became irregular and didn't become regular again until I was diagnosed with PCOS in December 2005 and started Met. I also gained about 70lbs after coming off them and all my PCOS symptoms started.

I don't know if that helps or not, but just wanted to share anyway.

I was put on BCP when I was 19. I was slim and (relatively) healthy but I had still only gotten my period like 2 - 3 times a year b4 BC. When I was 23 I decided to stop taking the pill for awhile to see if my period would come naturally. It didn't. In fact it never came again until I started back the pill about 4 months later.

When I asked a doctor about it he told me that the pill doesn't cure the PCOS, it just manages the symptoms therefore when I stopped the pill the symptoms (ie missing period, acne etc) would just start again.

Hmmm, guess I'm an exception. I had fairly regular periods when I first started (age 12.85)...and my cycle length got longer as I got older and gained weight...up to about 35-41 days between. About sophomore year of college my period stopped, that's when I was dx with PCOS. NP gave me BCP's but didn't tell me much about them. I stopped taking them (didn't like side effects) after about 8 months but the periods were very irregular again (I think I went 3 months without). I then got married, and went on BCP to kill two birds with one stone (pun not intended).

So, after 3+ consistent years of BC (pills, patch, pills) I went off and have had a period EVERY MONTH! Wooohoooo! They were almost still clockwork, up until last month that took about 35 days to come. I'm the heaviest I've ever been in my life too, so I can't count that toward the AF showing up. I hope that they continue...kinda...I am TTC so if they don't show and I get a BFP that would be good!

I used BCPs to jumpstart my periods, and when I'd go off it, they'd stay normal for years. I'm not sure if the BCPs make the underlying symptoms worse -- what's also very possible is that PCOS tends to get worse as we age, so your BCPs may not have created the problem, but instead masked the increasing symptoms until you went off it.

But everyone was different. I had normal periods (if long cycles, 35-ish days) as a teenager and into my early 20s. Then I was put on inhaled steroids for asthma, and I started gaining lots of weight and losing my periods. I still blame the steroids for triggering my PCOS. When I was diagnosed with PCOS at around 30, I went on BCPs for about 6 months and did some serious low-carbing. After six months, I went off the BCPs, had lost about 60 pounds and my periods came back regular like clockwork, now at about 30 days. I kept low carbing and dieting to a point where I lost too much weight, and my periods went away again. I went back on BCPs for another six months, put on a few pounds and they came back to normal, again around 30-day cycles. About three years ago I went on BCPs for the intended reason, this time for over a year, and they made me profoundly depressed. I went off them, and I was then every 28 days like clockwork. So much so that when I decided to try to get pregnant, it was simply to choose day 14 and say "now". Worked twice (first one was a m/c).

So I think a lot of what's wrong with us is the underlying problem and not the pills. But I think the pills are evil for a lot of reasons, so figure out why you're on them and decide if that's the best way to deal with that problem (PCOS symptoms, unwanted pregnancy, etc).

Good luck.

I went off the pill a few years ago. I had not been regular before I went on the pill. And if I ever was sick or was going through a stressful time, I would miss my period on the pill.

When I stopped, I slowly started becoming irregular again. Then there was a time I did not have it for 5 months. I started exercising regularly a couple of months later and they have been regular ever since. So Exercise has helped me stay regular.

i was one diane 35 for 1 1/2 months and just stopped it because of all the all-too-scary side effects. hoping and praying tha AF shows on her own because before bcp she did show up fairly regularly.

I've been irregular since I started my periods at about age 10. They put me on BCP when I was like 14 or 15, regular while on them but had problems as soon as I quit taking them. The only time I've had regular periods w/o BCP was from June 2006 - January 2007. I went backpacking for 4 months so I was walking approximately 15 miles a day from April - August 2006. I lost like 50 pounds. Unfortunately I can't keep that up indefinately. I think I could keep the PCOS under control if I could spend all my time backpacking. lol
As soon as I got back to the "real world" of work and school I started gaining weight again and then when my bf and I got together I went on BCP and gained more weight so my symptoms have just went haywire. I'm even having a bit of trouble staying regular even with the BCP. Anyone had that problem?
