Right now I am over-weight, probably the heaviest I have ever been since I just had surgery and haven't been very active, but I am trying to get back on track with managing PCOS and wondering if anyone has been able to successfully lose weight, clear up their skin, get their period back, etc. and how did you go about doing it??? I guess I need something to motivate me to follow this ascetic lifestyle that I have to adopt now with PCOS. My feeling is that if I have to give up most foods out there, and work out more than the average person, then I should definitely be "rewarded" but sometimes that's not the case with PCOS. I have had to adjust my goals for sure, I will never be skinny, but I would just kill to be in the upper range of the healthy weight for my height and body type you know. It's just hard to manage this syndrome instead of curing it, so I would just love to hear from someone that through modification, I might have a chance of living a normal life. I would do anything I could to get this under control but I have failed so many times folllowing regular diets in the past that I am afraid to get my hopes up and let's face it, it's not easy to drag yourself to the gym at the end of the day and not eat like the rest of your friends and family, who by the way are skinnier than you. Thanks!!!!
I don't have a weight loss sucess story for you yet! I need to work a little harder for that. There are some cysters who have benefited from weightloss in regards to PCOS. Some have started havign regular AF and conqured TTC. Have you seen the Diet & Exercise Forum? There is also another website called Fit At Any Size. You may want to check that one out too. Good luck!

It took me 6 months to lose 3lbs. Then I started losing I was 224, now i'm 211..though I was 208 a week ago, I'm bloated from Provera. I'm eating salads now to lose again.lol
Drink lots of green tea and water!! I bought a 2 liter water bottle and filled it with the best filtered water I could find and started drinking it everyday at work. Before I went to work, I'd drink green tea. Changed my white breads to 9 or 12 grain breads, my white pastas to wheat pastas, if I really needed a soda...I'd get one with splenda or if I really really treated myself, Caffine free diet pepsi. I fill my cart with greens for salad, mixed field greens spinach and romaine lettuce, add feta cheese, salt and pepper. Also frozen spinach which I'd throw in a small container frozen and just would pop into the microwave would turn out a beautiful green and yum! I also eat blueberries, strawberries, and most low GI berries. If you ever want recipes heres a website for you http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_ll

This isn't fully a success story, yet. But I hope it will encourage you. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2002. Tried to lose weight (ha, I've been doing that all my life, and gaining it back again). My endo had me talk to a nutritionist. Didn't help. Lost 10 lbs, gained 30...
This past September I decided to join Weight Watchers because a few of my friends were successfully losing weight with it. It is stretching my budget, but it is worth it. Since Sept, I have lost 20 lbs.
Also in August, I had started walking 1 1/2 miles every morning Mon-Fri around my neighborhood. (30 minutes)
I also try to follow the Insulin Resistance Diet, eat whole grains, not as much sweets and balance with protein.
As far as the PCOS goes, I haven't been to my doc for a check up, but I can tell you this. I have now had 2 periods in a row! (after a year of none and 2 years of crazy irregularity.) I still have some acne, but it is not as bad as it was when I was at my heaviest weight. I'm hoping the other things (excess hair, acne, crazy hormones) will clear up as I continue on this journey. I should probably get a check up soon and see where my progesterone is at.
I know WW is cost-prohibitive for some people. But I think the accountability is what helps me. At WW they have you write down *everything* you eat. Drink 6 glasses of water a day. Eat 6 servings of fruit & veggies a day. Have 2 servings of milk products a day.
I would just encourage people to do what you can. Take baby steps. My first baby step was to commit to walking every morning before work. Do what you can. As you heal from your surgery, perhaps you will be able to do more. Thanks for listening to my story.

You have inspired to me to keep fighting the good fight and to recommit myself to a healthy regimen, as soon as the holidays pass me by and there will be no more temptations for a long time. I plan on going on the South Beach Diet, which helped me lose weight before and utilizing my idle gym membership now that I am feeling better. I was just put on Met 1000 x 2 daily so maybe this will enhance my efforts and I have been taking Saw Palmetto for a couple of days now to combat acne. It's so hard to start all over from scratch but I am glad to see I am not the only one!! Thanks and goodluck to all of you as well!!!
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years back at age 35, when my periods started becoming irregular, my testesterone levels were very high and I started getting a lot of hair on my face. My BP was high as well. I went to a Gyn and she put me on OrthoCyclen and asked me to lose weight.
I prayed about this a lot and I believe God answered my prayers.
I found tremendous success with the Weigh Down Workshop, a book by a Christian writer called Gwen Shamblin. I lost 54 pounds in about a year - I went from 184 to 133. I am now at 146 because I haven't been very serious about my diet for a while.
The bottomline - eat whatever you want, but only when you are hungry and stop when you are full. Take small portions on your plate - helps to use smaller plates. It helps if you eat fewer carbs, but the downside is that if you eat more meat your cholesterol could go up. And no snacking between meals.
I've forgotten for a while that I have PCOS - my primary physician does my Gyn checkup as well, and she wants me to lose a little weight to get back to my lowest weight, and wants me to lower my cholesterol which is slightly high. Other than that, I have no more symptoms.
And before i forget, I exercise for 10-15 minutes a day. Leslie Sansome's 2 mile walk called Walk away the pounds.
I notice that even women who do not have PCOS have problems keeping their weight down after 35, so in this case, what started out as a bad thing (i.e., PCOS) has worked out for my good because it forces me to be weight conscious and take care of myself.
