Question Anyone been prescribed Provera to bring on their period?

Hi. It seems Provera is all the craze in the other message boards to bring on AF. I haven't had it for 1.5years and when I asked my specialist about it today he said it can cause breast cancer and that I don't need to be concerned that I haven't had my period. He said to just keep on taking Metformin & losing weight and it should come back on its own. Has anyone else had this response? I thought maybe it was less used in Australia or something? I want to have a baby & thought that provera and clomid would be the way to go. But my Dr says to just stay on Met - I've been on it for a year and no period yet! Any other suggestions to bring on AF???? Help!

Carmen

Find another doctor??

I had Provera prescribed to me to sort of 'kickstart' my cycles, and it worked for me while also being on met. I then had months of cycles that got shorter and shorter until I was having regular, 30-ish day cycles. I never o'd though. BUT, because of my regular cycles Clomid did the trick first go!

Good luck, how frustrating for you!!

Yeah I was first prescribed it to stop AF as I was more or less continuously bleeding. Then I used it to regulate my cycles. I believe it is healthy to have at least 3 periods a year, otherwise other complications can occur. I've been on Met for over 3 years (been using the pill and TTC with injections IVF etc so I didn't know if I would get AF on my own. Last month I stopped all meds including the pill and met to see if she would come by herself and no go, so Met might not help in that aspect. What kind of specialist is your doc, a gynae or an endo? I would ask again for it or move on to another doc and request the Provera and Clomid. Just a warning about Provera though, it might make you for a day or so leading up to AF. Good luck,

Karen

I used provera at one stage to stop contant spotting. The warning I didn't get with it was how HEAVY the bleed would be that followed. I also passed some huge clots that scared the crap out of me, and were quite painful.

Not sure how common those side effects are though...
Good luck with TTC!

I used it with no problems.

If you don't want to use it, try the low GI diet. I'd started my period within a week of starting that.

I've had no experience with Provera but after all the research I'd done, if my doctor wouldn't even consider my suggestions, I found another doctor, who suggested my ideas before I'd even had a chance to voice them. Depends how happy or comfortable you are with your doc I guess. Good luck!
Donna.

My specialist actually wanted to give me provera last week, but I refused. This is because I am confident I will get a period soon anyway, but also because I have read that it has been known to cause ovarian failure - although I don't know how much you have to take before this could occur (I read it in the 2006 Guide to Prescription Drugs book).

I think though, if you are not getting periods at least every now and then, you need to have a bleed and get that lining shed, otherwise I have heard it can get thick and cancerous. So for someone in that situation, I think the benefit could outweigh the risk. But I am no doc and you really need to have a doc who is knowledgeable and willing to talk to you about it all, so I'm with the others who are suggesting seeing someone else.

Hope this helps,
Michelle

Hmm - I agree - find another Dr. The use of provera is pretty common place to kick start a period for PCOS chicks. The breast cancer talk is due to that study done in the states a while ago that sparked the big scare about HRT (provera is often used as a part of HRT treatment for menopause). I personally feel the media went overboard with it and blew the results of a relatively small study way out of proportion. I guess, like anything, there are pros and cons and arguments for and against. You have to go with your gut instinct after getting as much info as you can about it.
I have had provera twice to kick start my cycle. That was at my heaviest weight - when I am at a reasonable weight I don't need it. Good luck with your pursuit of provera.

I too have used it a couple of times to kickstart my cycle. My Endo told me that it wasn't good to not have AF for a long period of time. I'd definitely be considering switching Dr's, especially if you are TTC and haven't had AF for 1.5years. Your Dr doesn't sound like he/she is being proactive enough in that regards.

Good luck, and keep us updated as to how your going!
