Unhappy Anyone Diagnosed after having children?

A dear friend of mine was recently diagnosed with pcos and was explaining some of the symptoms to me....and I thought not including the absence of my period I have everything she does. Well she told me that not having your periods was a huge indicator but it wasn't the only one. She has a sister with pcos who has her periods. Anyway I guess my question is when did you decide to go to the doctor? How did you know something was wrong? I have all the symptoms, acne, hair in the wrong places, extremely overweight and can't seem to get it off no matter what I do, and now after having our 3rd child last dec my periods are very irregular I normally have a 29-31 day cycle and but it's been going 33-34 since my daughter was born, right now I am going into day 38 and preg test shows negative. This has never happend before. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Default anyone diagnosed after having children?

I found out I had pcos in Oct 2002, one month after I married my hubby. We had been
together for 5 years and most of them we used no protection to prevent me from getting
pregnant, but I didn't. In past relationships I had had a miscarriage and tubal pregnancy.
I felt like I was going crazy before I was diagnosed because I was pretty much getting
blown off by the doctors. I would go six months without a cycle. They would say it was
normal or it was from stress, but I knew something was wrong. When I went to my ob-gyn
she ran all kinds of tests on me. She then informed me that I have PCOS. I have high
testosterone levels, excess hair, acne, obesity, fatigue. The most wonderful thing happened to me in Sept 2003, the weekend of my 1st wedding anniversary, we found out
that we were expecting our first child. He will be 18 months old, he is the most precious
little boy and we couldn't be happier. We're going to start trying for number 2. LOL

Me!!! For years I thought I had PCOS, but since I had periods & no real cysts (only 2 in 10years) I must not. Well, after each child, my symptoms would get a little worse---a little more weight that wouldn't come off, more acne, more hair, etc. After my 3rd, fatigue set in, I started getting regular migraines, and my cycles started getting screwy (3wks one month, then 6 or 7 the next ) I started exercising & dieting & gained 8 pounds!! I went to the Dr with a list of complaints & he ran every blood test imaginable. I really think he was leaning more towards Lupus, b/c I complained of aches & pains. Well the only test result that came back elevated was my testosterone (that he ran that day; later my new doc checked lipids & such) He called me PCOS, started me on metformin & the rest is history. I started researching on my own & realized that the dx should've been a "duh" but I thought I had to be obese (I'm overweight), have multiple cysts, and have serious fertility issues. It's a syndrome, meaning some of us have some symptoms & some of us have others, but we all have the same disorder.

I was diagnosed after having my 2 children. I had gained a lot of weight, my periods were non existant and I felt like I was "losing" it. I walked in to my my doctors office and said we need to figure this out.

They drew blood and I went back in a week. I still am not convinced that I have this. Maybe I am in denial. I think what made my periods sporatic was the weight gain. I know I was making bad choices concerning my food and I was over eating.

I had 2 children before I was diagnosed with PCOS. My periods have always been very irratic....months on and months off. My second child was born in January 2003 and I was just officially diagnosed this month. I should have went to the doctor with my concerns when my period problems long ago, but in the past, they have always just gave me B/C and pushed me out the door. B/C makes me very ill, so I just accepted that I'd have to deal with it. It wasn't until I started getting very tired and just an overall worn out feeling as well as a period that lasted for about 6 months before I started demanding some answers. The first doc I went to was a wacko, so I went for a second opinion. The second doctor is awesome and answers every question in detail (and I have a lot!) Now, my issues have gotten to a point that I am getting a hysterectomy to take my uterus out soon. It is possible that medication could have helped me long before I got to this point.
My personal opinion is, if you have a gut feeling that something is wrong, go to a doctor. If they can't explain it, get a second opinion, and a third. I know I am glad I did.

I was diagnosed some time after my son was born. I found out in 2003, and my son was born in 2000. My ex and I were never using protection, but we were in a ld relationship, so that was a part of the reason we didnt think anything of it before I became pg. We were married about 8 months (with the usual...enthusiasm..of newlyweds ) before I got pg. Hes almost 5 now and we never used protection after, and I have never gotten pg. I was going about 5 months between periods when I went to the dr, it took several diff doctors, until finally a NP diagnosed me. Later the dr told me that the fact that I had gotten pregnant on my own increased my chances in the future, but time is still running out. Now I am with a new person and we both want for me to become pg, because while wed prefer to be married first, we know times not on our side.

I was diagnosed 2 years after my 3rd baby (2nd pg ). My symptoms got way worse after my first pregnancy. I dont know if it was the extra 5kg I was carrying or what. After I had my last baby things got really bad, really heavy hair growth, my stomach was huge (think 6 months preg) , hair started really thinning on my head, but the funny thing is my period has always been regular and if anything is more normal now (every 28 days as opposed to 35 days before I had kids). I was only DX officially in March

My cycles were regular when I got PG and returned to normal after having DD. It was only a year ago that they went crazy and I found out what PCOS was - and realized I had been living with many of the other symptoms for years. But since last year, every symptom has been magnified.

I had 3 kids although they're 4 and 5 years apart before I was diagnosed and a hysterectomy too.
Before I had my second child we tried for quite a long time and I had a tubal pregnancy and I was discussing fertility treatments with the doctor. I had at different times complained about all the different symptoms that I know now point directly to PCOS but at the time didn't want to lay all that in the doctor's lap at the same time, afraid he'd think I was a hypochondriac. I had no idea that they could be all related and now I really regret not speaking up because my quality of life was definitely compromised and if I had gotten the diagnosis sooner I may have been able to avoid the hysterectomy. In hindsight I knew I wasn't well for a very long time and I should have insisted something be figured out but really it wasn't until I asked about the possibility of PCOS that they said that yes I do have it. Elevated testosterone & DHEA-S, sporadic periods, hirsuitism, acne, obesity, etc. The gynecologist I was seeing seemed to think that diagnosis wasn't necessary since I wasn't trying to conceive, and I think she thought the hysterectomy would "cure" me, and my GP just kind of threw up his hands and said he didn't know what to do but would send me to an Endocrinologist. I am still awaiting that appointment and hope that he will be willing to do something for me. I really am tired of feeling like crap.

I had my son in November of 2002. I was diagnosed with PCOS a couple of weeks ago. I have been having major issues since Jan of this year. Missing periods for a month or two at a time, weight gain (I've never been this big in m life ), acne, hair growth, etc etc. Right now I'm looking into my options as far as medication goes so I can schedule a dr's appointment to discuss it further and get a prescription. Also, I need to figure out how to lose this weight. The thing is, I'm not even sitting around eating junk all the time or anything! It just won't go away. Anyways, I can't wait to talk to more people who are in similar situations. I have been getting depressed very easily lately.

I had my son in sept 2001 and was given the depo-provera contraceptive injection too soon (4 weeks after the birth instead of 6). I also had a retained placenta which caused septicaemia so had to have a D & C. I'm not sure if either of those things contributed but I thought I'd put them in just n case they did. Anyway, I came off the depo injection over 2.5 years ago and had no periods until Jan this year but still haven't been officially diagnosed with PCOS. I'm going to see a gynaecologist in November so hopefully will get some answers there.
