Default Anyone else afraid to begin Metformin?

I was officially diagnosed this past Tuesday with PCOS and of course, given a prescription for Metformin. I'm a little hesitant to begin this medication with all of its contraindications and possible side effects. Am I the only one afraid to begin this regimen?

I was at first, until I saw all the benefits it has given me. Now, it has not helped with other PCOS symptoms, but it has helped even out my hormones enough for me to respond to fertility treatments... and for me, that in itself has been worth it. I no longer have any s/e's from it, and have no issues at all taking it.

It helps many woman with PCOS is other areas though... so in my mind, it's worth trying.

But, remember, it is a personal choice. So, if you don't feel comfortable taking it... then don't unless you have to. You should never have to do anything you don't want to.

Best wishes.

I hesitated for 3 years, because of the side effects, i did take them for about 3 weeks once and i already saw improvements with the hair and the dark patches, But the side effects got to me, i always felt like vomiting.

Also because I'm 19 the thought of not drinking alcohol was unbearable (legal in AUS)

I finally got fed up about a week ago and started taking them again, I think it really is worth it, and everyones different anyways, you may not even get side effects!

My side effects aren't as bad this time round, I'm actually liking it this time round because my bowels going crazy, and i was tired of being constipated (tmi sorry)

welcome to sc

i was worried about starting met, too. But for me it's been great. I find that as long as i avoid greasy/fatty/sugar foods as much as poss, and always eat with the met i am ok with it.

i had no SEs when i started and many women don't - so just do it correctly and perhaps you won't have any at all. also the ER version pretty much means you won't have side effects.. maybe some do but much less than regular met. either way if you take it correctly, you'll either not get SEs, or you will and they'll pass with time .. just go for it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and caring responses! I haven't taken any yet because I'm battling an upper respiratory virus and I want to make sure I'm at my very best before starting the new medication

I was terrified, mainly becuase I have a sensitive stomach and tend be prone to diarrhea. So I delayed starting it for a month. The first day I took it I was afraid to leave the house. But it turns out I was fine. No diarrhea, and actually I got slightly constipated. But no big deal. Not everyone has side affects, so give it a shot and see what happens.
