I am so frustrated. I feel like doctors have no idea what they are talking about. I saw a reputable RE who had me on clomid and was ready to move on to Femara and injectables. I don't want to do that without trying met. I also asked my PCP to put me on met but he said no, I need to see a specialist. The problem is the specialists are stupid in my area. I can read, I am an intelligent woman, and I can clearly see that the research points that met should be tried first for a thin woman with PCOS. This is also more affordable for me. I think this whole fertility thing is a money machine, why would they want us to get pregnant easily when it means no $$$ for them. I am putting myself on met. I will still look around for a cooperative doctor, but seriously. Have any other thin women had a hard time getting someone to rx met????

My first RE would not prescribe Met because I wasn't overweight. When I relocated I searched for someone who would prescribe it. I made an appointment with the RE and an OB/GYN. The OB prescribed it for me. I still met with the RE and he couldn't understand why I wasn't already taking it.
If you are having problems finding a PCP or RE to do it, try looking for a female OB/GYN. Since you don't have to keep waiting, just make appointments with several different ones. If you find one you like you can cancel the other appointments. You could ask if they treat PCOS when you call, but I doubt you'll get a good answer.

I'm sorry you are having troubles. I was lucky in that my doctor just immediately puts thin PCOS on it and doesn't even test for IR since he says the tests are unreliable anyway. My OB (who happens to be my RE's wife) will also prescribe it when I am ready to ttc again. Have you considered calling a doctor that you know prescribes met (even if its not near you) to see if they may be able to recommend a doctor in your area that would? I'm not sure if it would work, but might be worth a shot. Good luck!
Thanks ladies. I appreciate your input. I have actually decided to start myself on met while I continue searching for a doctor. I have already tried the PCP and an RE with no success. I just made an appt with an OB that will be in a few weeks. A friend is talking to her OB to get an idea if she is informed about PCOS or knows someone who will rx met. I'm going to keep looking for an OB until I find one.

I went through the same junk with an GYN who told me that since 1 cycle of 100 mg Clomid didn't work, I needed IVF. I'm a medical therapist (graduate degree in social work from Columbia) and researcher in reproductive and infectious diseases, and I told her that I didn't agree, that according to my research (and practice) Metformin was more appropriate. She gave me the whole, "well, I'm the MD in the room" speech. I went to Dr. Lobo at Columbia University and was put on Met that day. A year later I was holding my son. Go to an RE who backs you up and is more open. The latest research is clear that Metformin is more appropriate for lean women than just giving them clomid.
Thanks, Tabsies! I have my MSW too! I started myself on met over the weekend. I'm having such a hard time finding a competent dr in my insurance network. It's very frustrating but I refuse to let it stall my plans. I hope met helps me as much as it's helped you!

I am sorry if this is a stupid question but I am so new to all of this, what is a RE Doctor mean? Maybe that is who I need to see as well for the Metformin.
