This is something that has been bothering me since I found out I have PCOS. The first sympton of PCOS that I always see on websites is infrequent menstrual periods. My period is pretty normal.. it's pretty heavy but besides that it's average. I was just wondering what you guys thought about that, and if a lot of you have normal periods too. Also, my mom thinks that because my menstrual cycle is normal, that I probably won't have as much trouble having children. I would love to believe this but I'm skeptical. Any help would be appreciated, thanks everyone!
Yeah, I have a pretty normal AF. You don't have to have an abnormal one to have PCOS. There are actually 5 types of PCOS, and irregular periods are not required for any of them:
Jashobeam - thanks for that, I also didn't realize there was so many different types. I was just told I had PCOS. No types or anything.
No, I do not have normal periods. Never have. Except for almost a year after my second surgery I was "regular". Now it has been 8 months since my last period. I will find out more tomorrow after my dr appt.

I would take a basal body temperature and see if I am ovulating , it's good to know the ovulation cycle even if not considering conceiving. That helps me understand my body. Working out and eating right helped me to ovulate regularly and control heavy bleeding, cramps, weakness and severe back ache.
Mine are what I call schizophrenic. I have been on the pill for the past 6 months and just stopped. Prior to being on the pill, they either don't come at all, last for a month or maybe 3 days and be heavier than raging rapid. I just stopped the pill and 14 days after my last cycle started, a new one began.

I have always had pretty regular periouds. anywhere from 28 to 38 days, but they fluctuated within that week to 10 days. I missed one here or there too, but most of the time it was stress related.
I have pretty much all the other symptoms of PCOS though, and so far on met I've been feeling much better.

It depends what weight you are as well.
You might find that if you put on a lot of weight your periods might stop or be really irregular as when you put on weight PCOS gets worse. Especially if your uppper stomach is big indicating INsulin resistance is there or is worse.
Whne i was slim I got more or less regular periods, longer cyles say 30 to 35 days but when I put on weight my period kind of stopped and I went without it for a few months...
Since I was 21 my periods have been regular, every 28-29 days and they last 4 days. I do not have "bio" children and have had a problem concieving. I think my body does what it is "suppose" to being a woman but the eggie just can't get out due to the cysts. PCOS in itself is a very confusing disease. I agree w/ a PP who stated maybe you should try and track your cycles, it may help you know if you are having "normal" cycles rather then just a bleed. Good luck!

I've had regular 27-29 day cycles for a year and a half now. I have alot of other symptoms and previously had irregular periods. In 2004 I missed a couple, and in 2005 I had about 3 the whole year. I'm not and haven't been ttc, but I like to think that because I have regular cycles, I might not have too much trouble ttc. I'm trying to be optimistic. :]
