Question Anyone else try castor oil packs?

My ND gave me Castor Oil packs as one of her methods to use and after weeks of procrastinating, i finally decided to try it. I procrastinated because I knew it would be messy and a pain in the butt to do, but it's supposed to be really helpful for the liver, gut, and entire reproductive area. I was told by my ND that it helps cleanse the liver and also dissolve the cysts. One side effect though is it's laxative properties. I was skeptical but figured what the heck.

I was right about the mess. Anyone who's willing to give this a shot, just a word of advice... wear as little clothes as possible. Even pushing my pj bottoms and undies down, I still got oil on them and had to change before bed. My doc was not kidding about the laxative effect either. I was supposed to keep it on for an hour, but I just couldn't. after 45 min I had to make a run for the bathroom.

I was wondering if anyone on here has used the packs consistently and noticed a change in your cycles or if they actually helped with the cysts. I'm going to keep at it and let you all know how it goes. Thanks.

Thumbs up I use them!

Hi Ange,

I'm am all for the use the castor oil packs! I use them mosty when I'm in ovarian pain. I find them soothing, if nothing else. I'm not sure how much they help the cysts I have, but normally if I'm in pain, and I do the packs- I'm not in pain after a couple of days of using the oil. It makes me feel a little crampy (no matter what part of my cycle I'm in) though-but in a good way.

I think you are only suppose to have a laxative effect if you take it internally... (don't take the kind you have for external use internally)

It is suppose to help get your lymph system moving, to help cleanse your body of the back up of toxins in the area you put the pack on, and to increase that internal organ's function.

It is a little messy- but here's what I do to try to make it less messy, and to make the pack work.

I use Poke Root/Castor Oil. I put the oil on (not a ton of it) a washcloth, I put a plastic bad over the back of the cloth (facing your clothes), then I put a hot water bottle over the bag and cloth, or one of those heat patches you can buy from the pharmacy... The heat is what helps it absorb. I nornmally do this, when I can lay down for a while, at bedtime or whatever.

Hope this helps!
Lulu

I didn't take it internally, but that's not the only way it would have a laxative effect. My ND gave me the oil and a flannel cloth, which I saturated in the oil and then placed over my entire belly area. Then I put a plastic bag over it, and then a heating pad. I could definitely feel it working before I had to make a run for the bathroom. I'm going to try doing it 5-6 times a week and see if it does anything.

Glad to know it helps with ovarian pain. Thanks!

What I did when I tried it, I rubbed the castor oil directly over my lower abdomen area. Than I wrapped the kitchen plastic wrap around the area, than I put the heating pad on top.

It wasn't messy at all, it was sooting, but I can't say for sure if it helped me other than giving me a sooting feeling.

i started the castor oil packs. I only put it on my lower abdomenom, because i have blocked fallopian tubes. I dont have a nd, but a lady at the health food store told me about it, and then its all over the net, by nd's. it definately a laxative, i feel it made me regular. it is good for removing toxins. and its so relaxing. i look forward to doing it every night. i hope it helps remove the pcos symptoms as well.

There aren't any harmful side effects are there?

Not that I know of. From what my doc has told me and what I've read online, Castor Oil has been used for a lot of different ailments because of the drawing properties it has through the skin. People have even taken it internally, although that's not something I'll be trying any time soon.

okay get this..Back in sept/oct..i did an ivf cycle..it was not successful, but when i went in for my regular ultra sounds, different ultra sound technicians would ask me if i was pcos..i guess they could tell by looking at my ovaries.
So after my ivf failed, i was hurt and all emotional out of wack, and i thought okay back to square one... i read that castor oil packs are good for removing swelling from fallopian tubes,so I started using them properly and religiously in november. and it was so relaxing, that i did it at least 4-5 times a week, for about an hour or 1.5 hours. while i watched tv.
about 2 weeks ago, i started having some pains and bulges around my ovaries or fallopian tubes...so i went to a walk in clinic, and the doctor wanted me to have an ultra sound done. so i went in, just yesterday the doctor got my results and said..."you have no cysts on your ovaries, whatsoever." she still said that i have pcos. then i told her just in oct i had cysts....i thought it was the metformin, then later in the day i realized it may have been both the metformin and castor oil packs. ..but i really beleive it was the castor oil packs that did the magic. So as long as your cysts are not big or active..i think this is the best thing ever. i stopped after i started getting the pains, but maybe it was fixing something or getting rid of something in my body. i'm started it again today!

That's wonderful news! I haven't been using them as much as I should, but after reading that it's incredibly encouraging for me to get back into the habit. Good luck to you!

Just a small useful info,
Castor oil packs are really good for whole of the abdominal area, and South Indians have the habit of having a tea spoon of it as the first thing in Sunday mornings where everyone will be at home, especially to children. In anycase, you can apply it directly to the lower abdomen daily like a lotion and actually there is no need to apply hot packs unless u have pain..as lower abdominal skin is usually warm to touch than other parts of body...And as a south indian,I recommend to use the original ayurvedic preparation of castor oil called franch oil NH plus, its usually available in all pharmacies and supermarkets in India but I live in the UK now and i usually ask my mom to send it along with the parcel ,if my stock runs out (which i think can be ordered online, but it works out cheaper for me this way)it has an extract of tulsi and castor oil and has immense benefits.Try it on girls...This will be much more useful in other conditions too and is little less messy for me . I use this whenever i get pain during my menstruation, and it gives a lot of relief.Hope this helps

Wow Salmajz, that is fantastic news. Congratulations. My mum told me about castor oil packs a year or so ago, but it sounded so messy I never got around to it and eventually forgot about it. I will definitely try some. I don't know if I will be able to get the Ayurvedic formula (I live in Australia) but will definitely try.

Thanks for the info and all the best to everyone.

Castor oil packs dissolved all of my cysts. I did it on the abdomen and also used tampons soaked in castor oil several times a day for two weeks. I never experienced a laxative effect.
