Anyone get these side-effects from Spironolactone/Aldactone??
Hi everyone,
I have now been on Spiro for about 7 weeks - gradually increased from 50mg to 200 over the first 5 and have been at 200 for approx. 2 weeks. I can't really say I've noticed side-effects to speak of. When I got to 150 I noticed an increase in urination, but nothing too dramatic - though now on 200mg I don't always make it through the night...but maybe I'm taking it too late?
My big problem is that I am so tired all the time. No matter how much sleep I get, I just can't seem to wake myself up - I have to set 2 alarms and they are on Snooze for 2 hours before I manage to drag myself out coz I keep falling back into complete sleep for another 5 mins at a time. Some days I could fall asleep again anywhere, anytime, but nearly everyday I can have a 1hour or more nap in the afternoons. Then most nights I am ready for bed too, although occasionally I have a very bad night where I am up every couple of hours and don't get to sleep until early morning. And over the past week or so I have had sore muscles all over - different ones all the time but they feel like I've pulled them when I haven't done anything! I feel thirsty most days also which I normally don't even thought I don't drink a lot.
Does anyone else experience this sort of thing? Or does it sound like something else - I have PCOS too, but I don't know that it causes these symptoms? The tiredness has probably been around since Christmas, but I think it is getting worse - I am on holidays at the moment and I'm waking up at about 9.30am and ready for an hour and half sleep by 2 or 3pm! And if I let myself I would sleep all day long. I can't go on like this, thats for sure.
When I first started it I was SOOOO tired and my boobs hurt so bad! I kinda felt like I had the flu. My side effects lasted about 2 weeks. I also stopped taking it after about 9 months because it caused haevy and frequent periods.

I'm on 100mg of Spiro. I've been taking that for more than two years now. When I first started taking it, I did have to go to the bathroom alot. I also remember being so exhausted and would literally have to take a nap as soon as I got home from work. All that's better now. Maybe it will get better for you. You can always check with your Dr. to be sure that your symptoms are normal.

Perhaps you're mildly dehydrated. Increase your water intake and see if that helps...

According to http://my.webmd.com/hw/womens_conditions/tw9658.asp#tw9663 some side effects of spiro are:
* Irregular menstrual periods with higher doses of the medication.
* Rash.
* Scalp hair loss.
* Nausea or fatigue with higher doses of the medication.
* Cramping, diarrhea.
* Drowsiness, lack of energy.
* Headache, confusion.
The fatigue and drowsiness seem to fit with your description. I know that some mediations cause dry mouth. A med I'm on for headaches does that and I am constantly thirsty. I drink water all day long, and I'm still thirsty. According to http://my.webmd.com/drugs/drug-6288-Spironolactone+Oral.aspx?drugid=6288&drugname=Spironolactone+Oral a change in the amount of urine is a side effect to report promptly to your doctor.

Spiro is a diuretic so it is natual that it is going to make you go to the bathroom more....Also, it affects your BP. It will actually lower your BP for you. So that is where the tiredness comes from. I know on my BP med it makes me really tired. It's always good to discuss any side effect with your doctor!!

No tiredness for me, but increased appetitie - I swear I had a tapeworm there for a while. On my third month and just got the irregular period thing. I will continue though and see if it adjusts back to normal.
Definitely drink water - hate to say it, but exercise helps with the tiredness.
