I actually recently started a thread on this under Metformin, sorry don't know how to give a link. I had an appt with my endo yesterday and wanted to know the same thing you did. My endo prescribed Met for me w/o IR testing. Diabetes runs in my family so it was a concern. She wanted me to go for testing tomorrow for some sort of glucose test in which i had to consume a bunch of carbs and sugar beforehand. I'm scared though cause they reak havoc on my body(my heart pounds, thirsty, etc) and i don't really want to know the answer, bad i know.
Anyways, i've talked to a few other ladies who have been prescribed Met even with IR testing and it coming back normal. I went in armed with research showing the benefits of it and my endo was willing to give it a try. If it doesn't work for me there was something else she wanted to give a whirl but it was nice to not leave the doc's office in tears because she actually did listen to me. Good luck with your appt tomorrow.

My dr(and he's just an ob/gyn!) never even tested me for IR, he prescribed met as soon as he diagnosed my PCOS. He feels it can be helpful even in women who don't test IR(some feel that all women with PCOS are IR to ~some~ degree, the tests aren't perfectly accurate and if you are mildly IR you can test as not IR, I've heard anyway). I think some of Dr. Glueck's studies have shown that met helped non IR women conceive, if it help them get pregnant than obviously it's doing something! So even if you're not trying to concieve I'd assume it may be able to help.

My family doc and my RE both prescribed IR even though the fasting insulin (i think that was it) was fine. My RE said she wasnt even going to do the glucose tolerance test because she would be putting me on Glucophage XR either way (the family doc had me on reg. metformin but I had TOO many side effects).
Even though I havent had a huge weight loss (5 pds in 5 months), I have not gained any more which is a big step in itself, and my acne is a little better, the hair growth is milder, and I dont have so much hair falling out. I think it has really helped me a lot, even though they didnt think i was IR.
GOOD LUCK! I would def. ask the doc about it!
