A good base for a smoothie would be whole milk (a lot of stores are selling "carb countdown" a reduced carbohydrate milk with only 3 net carbs), silken tofu, or plain yogurt. Add any low glycemic fruit - like cherries, any kind of berry or peaches and a little bit of lemon or lime juice if you like it citrusy, and of course some ice cubes. just blend it all together in a food processer or blender and use a little artificial sweetener if it isn't sweet enough. everyone's preference for smoothies are different, so just play around with the proportions until you decide how you like it.
my favrite smoothie recipe . . .
3/4 C whole milk
3/4 C plain whole milk yogurt
1 C blueberries
1-2 packets Splenda
lemon juice
vanilla
ice cubes
Blend all the ingredients in a food processor/blender and serve as soon as possible - makes about 2 servings - 12 net carbs per serving
I just want to reiterate that plain yogurt is actually low carb, though the package says it has a bunch. They have to list the carb count of the milk that goes into it, but the bacteria in the yogurt essentially eats the lactose for you, so the result is a nice low carb, low glycemic treat. It's a great base for all sorts of fruits, but also instant coffee or cocoa powder with a dash of vanilla extract and sweetener for a different kind of smoothie. Unfortunately bananas are high glycemic, so that staple is kinda out, or use just a couple of chunks and freeze the rest for next time. Peanut butter goes well with it!
I usually use Carb Solutions meal replacement shake powder and mix up a meal on the go when I need one. They're pretty decent.

I have one I like to have for breakfast it has about
13g carbs, 5g fibre, 18g protein and contains healthy fat.
I put half a can of grapefruit (no sugar) in the blender, add two wine glasses of plain water, one spoonful of psyllium husks, half a scoopful of vanilla whey protein powder and a tablespoon of organic flaxseed oil. Then just blend, put into a container and drink through a straw (if you drink it through a straw because it is thick it just tastes really clean and citrusy but from a glass you get a bit of the oil on your mouth). Honestly if you drink it through a straw you don't know there is oil in the drink!!

that's interesting - i never knew that ! just curious, do you know how many effective carbs the plain yogurt really has?
I hate to be a party pooper but on the Diet and Exercise board I know Kat posted a research article that suggests you do actually have to count the carbs in your yoghurt as they are used by the body.
That said, Plain Greek Yoghurt only has 4g of carbs per 100g!
