Default Anyone got a recipe for Taco meat.(seasoning wise)

I am looking for a recipe to make taco meat. DH can not have the mix kind that comes in the taco kits. Anyone know how they make them in mexican restaurants or have a recipe of their own. Thank you

You can use whatever you want. I like sprinkling in chili powder and garlic or onion salt. Quantities don't really matter, just add it until it tastes right.

Other good spices to add are: cumin (for a little authentic taste), paprika (for sweet), cayenne (for heat), and even a little oregano (but just a little).

Or you can mix in a jar of salsa if you're in a pinch.

(Don't add cinnamon or garam marsala-- I do not know what DH was thinking.)

Taco Seasoning Mix, ala Taco Bell (apparently)

1 Tbls. all-purpose flour
1 Tbls. corn starch
1 Tbls. dried minced onion
1 tsp. beef bouillon granules OR 1 beef bouillon cube - crushed
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. onion salt
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. granulated sugar

Combine and store in an air-tight container.

Notes: To make taco meat, brown 1 lb. ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat; drain off fat. Add seasoning mix and 3/4 cup water. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This recipe is the equivalent to a 1.25 oz. packet of taco seasoning.

What I do after I cook the meat, in the blender, blend an onion, fresh garlic with a touch of water (for the blender) and mix it up. Then after stiring it in the meat I add cumin to taste. That is all it takes for me I don't like all the spices it give me heart burn baaaaaaaad!!!! And it makes it more crumbly than juicy drainy tacos.

I brown ground meat and add a can of rotel tomatoes. Sometimes chopped onions too (finely diced). Then for the spices I add garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt and pepper.

My mother always put a small potato, chopped up really tiny into the meat - she would microwave it first to get it soft (soft baked, i guess) then just chop it up to about the size of the meat - it gave it enough starches to hold the meat together and tastes really good - i put onion in mine as well, and garlic, salt and pepper. As long as you use enough salt, thats the best taco meat ive ever come up with - if you start getting seasoning happy youll end up with yukky meat - and it can dry it out too, making it rubbery - im a firm believer in "less is more" Just make sure youre buying quality meat. It makes a HUGE difference. I refuse to buy meat at the grocery store anymore after trying it fresh from a meat market nearby - i near about fainted from how much better quality it was - Support your local markets and buy fresher! but if youve got crap meat, might as well douse it with all that junk - why do you think taco bell uses it?
