Default Anyone had a nonstop period?

I've never really had the problem of nonstop bleeding, but I just finished bleeding for 19 straight days, only stopping because my OB/GYN prescribed BCP. I've had to take them 3/day for 3 days, 2/day for 2 days, then 1/day until the pack is finished. I'm on the 3rd day of pills.

Normally I have really LONG cycles (40 days, 60 days, even 100 days). Since I stopped breastfeeding my baby, I had 2 30 day cycles, a 45 day cycle, then 15 days later I started bleeding for 19 days. Weird, huh?

Anyone else have this problem?

My sister and I both have PCOs and she was bleeding for two months, and she was hemorrhaging with big blood clots.

I was diagnosed with PCOs when I was 15, and I've had regular periods since then, but before I was diagnosed, I would bleed sometimes for two, or three months, then I wouldn't have a period for months, maybe 6 months, or more.

I don't think it's normal that you're bleeding like this... I would go to your doctor.

She/he might put you on metformin, or some kind of birth control like yasmin, or yaz.

UGH!! I have been having awful periods, (when I have them) Until this week my last real period from hell was in april. Then I was bleeding for 5 weeks , but it wasn't a period, my dr wanted to smack me for not calling sooner for an appointment, I didn't have cramps or back pain like usual with the period so other than annoying I was just hoping it would stop.
The super huge clots are uterine casts, my dr said the lining sloughing off, they just kept coming out, very icky to say the least! I could actually feel them come out.
Anyway- she put me on some hormone pills for 2 weeks (which stopped my bleeding in 2 days) and I was blood free for 2 weeks, and anemic from teh excessive loss, had to take an iron sup and multivitamin in addition to my metformin 2x a day. She said I need to make sure not to skip any meds or I will start the bleeding all over again. or go on bcp, but I have been trying to get preg, so this week I am going to see her to discuss the last possible options, since I don't ovulate.

Then 2 days after stopping the hormone pills, I started a real period, it has been xtra miserable, I actually was/am bleeding so heavy (super tampon and overnight pad in a hour or less!) if I moved to much I feel like blood is just pouring out Every time I had to use the bathroom I would end up with a mess.I have had such aweful cramps and backache in addition, that I had to call into work! I took too many pamprin max and aleve and made myself sick earlier today and have had a heating pad on for teh last 2 days. I am feeling the best I have in the last 3 days now. I would definitely do see a dr. Mine said to never wait that long again, she said to call after 10 days at the most because something is wrong.

about a year ago I had a 21 day period, then finally went in, I was really anemic after that one, it was really heavy.

I am sure this was way to much info, but it is good to know I am not the only person with this insane bleeding! It sux and makes me quite useless on all accounts!

Thanks all. The bleeding has stopped for now (after the mega doses of BCP) and I'm not in any kind of pain or anything, so I think it might have just been a fluke. I just wonder what's going to happen once the BCPs stop. I assume I'll get a withdrawal bleed. I just hope it doesn't last that long!

Thumbs up

Many many moons ago I would bleed for weeks at a time, big clots that wouldn't stop so I went on the pill and it went away. Now that I've gone off the pill, I didn't have a period at all from last april to october, and then bled pretty much constantly from october on. I went to the doc in jan and he put me on metformin, that didn't stop it, and then went back april and he put me on prometrium. That stopped the bleeding. But I would bleed for two weeks spot for two weeks and them bleed for another two from october right through to april, I know how you feel

Wow! I hear ya ladies! i SERIOSULY never knew that so many women had this problem too. I was diagnosed Dec 03 with PCOS. 3 kids all conceived naturally, but it wasnt easy. I would go up to 6 months without a period then bleed for atleast 45 days up to 80 days. I started to notice that it would get worse after every child I had.... I bled for 18 months straight after my third child.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw a homeopathic dr during that time and nothing changed. I was prayed over and stopped for 2 weeks, then started bleeding again, and go so fed up with it got on bcpills for 5 months to train my body. As soon as i finished my last pack, i bled for 45 days straight still.... went to a gyno who put me on progesterone..... 10 day supply, bled the whole time. She then put me on the tappering method of bcpills the 3/day for 4 days then 2/day for 3 days and so on and I had an allergic reaction within 36 hours of the meds. She switched me to Provera for 10 days and finally stopped bleeding on day 6 of Provera. Now, I'm TTC #4, but I saw this and had to share what Ive been through. No its not normal for normal people, but evidentally its normal for us.... LOL.

The Dr said its called Mennorhgia and it usually happens to women with PCOS who have gone untreated for years and have had kids. That would be me. Until recently.

OK so I am having the same problem. About 2 years ago I expierenced my first "long" period. I believe if memory serves me correctly I bled for almost a month. The Dr I went and seen gave me provera to induce a peroid (stating it was a anti ovulatory stage I was going thru) She was in hopes that the provera would cause me to ovulate and then it would cause me to have a "normal" period. At that time it worked. Then for the past year and a half my periods are getting longer and longer...a month...then 7 weeks, then 8 weeks up till this last period. I started it on May 22 and JUST stopped on the 29th of July. I also expierence clotting but when I asked my Dr..I was told it was normal to expierence clotting at my age. Anyhow..I was due to have labs ran and they were alarmed to find that my HGB levels are 7.6. As you all probably know it should be between the 11-16 range (according to the air force hospital) I have had light headaches and a little tired, but just thought it was due to my being a very busy mommy. But no suprise....I have became anemic due to the length of time I bleed at once. Of course I now take ferrous sulfate 325mg and eat every iron rich food known to man, BUT I was wondering if you all have been prescribed BCP's to lessen the monthly flow. I hate the thought of taking them, so I have read on here where some ladies have had fibroids, polyps, endo etc that has caused irregular periods...and I am wondering if I should start a pill/iud just to make sure my next period is more on the "normal" side first OR shall I get a ultrasound/laporoscopy to check for any new fibroids or anything that may be causing me to bleed for months at a time?!?! I have always been used to skipping periods due to PCOS but never having long ones. I am scared that I will start the pill and from what I am reading it can cause ovarian cysts and as all us cysters know...we already have them, and dont really want to add to the problem....NEED ADVICE!! Sorry this post is so long...just at a loss of what to do at this time and feel noone other than someone with PCOS would understand where I am coming from. Thank you for your time in advance~Angelizemom

from personal experience I've always had more of the long period form or PCOS, I before BC never went months and months without bleeding. I always had it, and when I was 15 it was so bad I had to wear black at all times, as when I would stand up i'd bleed through everything down to my knees. Clots and tons of blood.
My gynecologist just informed me that menstrual blood is only 5% red blood cells, and I explained that perhaps it should be taken more seriously when my hemoglobin drops 30 points (sorry going my canadian numbers)LOL

I'm actually a little more confused now, because my bleeding happened on CD15. It seems like most of you gals had a really LONG period after not having one for a while, which makes more sense.

The frustrating thing is that I've started weaning off the mega doses of BCP and it seems that the spotting is coming back. Depending on what happens today, I think I'll have to call my doctor back... I hope it's nothing too serious, but I feel pretty good so maybe it's just a hormonal thing.

I'm not sure if it's related or not, but I've been getting some weird facial hair lately too. I hate PCOS.

All of the extra-long bleeding I've ever had was after a time of no periods at all. I've had two different times where I bled for over 4 months straight, clots and all, but that was before my regular BCP days. My treatment for the first time was similar to what you have described (3 BCP/day for so long, 2 BCP/day for so long, etc.), and once I got down to one pill/day the spotting started again. My physician told me it was normal and that I needed to finish the pack and probably start the next one before it was completely under control. BUT that was for me. I would suggest that you call them and see what they want you to do.

One thing I found that really helped me with the spotting was making sure I took the pill at the same time everyday. In the beginning, if I was more than about 15 minutes off, I'd spot for a day or two.

I'll keep you in my prayers. I know how frustrating it can be!

I went to a GYN yesterday and she made me a appt to have a endometrial biopsy done in a couple weeks. She said the "long" bleeds I am now expierencing is due to my PCOS, (not really new news to me ) Anyhow, she is being very thurough in a work up of hormone labs, the biopsy, and a ultrasound. Until all the labs and results are in, she has decided to put me on 2 weeks of progesterone to stop a period from coming. She acknowledged that we need to make sure to build my HGB back up and I cant do that if I am losing it from bleeding.

I told her that it seemed after my first son was born, the PCOS symptoms had subsided...then I had son#2 and after him they seemed to slowly start showing theirselves again. I know PCOS never goes away...but it was refreshing when they were lessened a bit.(as I am sure some of you agree).

Ill keep you all posted in hopes that their may be someone out here who is expierencing the same thing as me and I can offer them some answers BTW anyone ever used "megace" as a progesterone to stop periods....Drug fact sheet says its used for cancerous tumors BUT somehow also works as a progesterone....kinda strange >.> <.<

I'm currently on Megace and yes it's progesterone and yes it stops the bleeding.

Mine's a really odd case. I don't get my period for several months then bleed for 7-10days then about a week later I start bleeding again for anything between 24 hours and 2 weeks. It's so odd. I've been prescribed Yasmin but as I already weigh close to 200lbs I'd rather not take something that might add to my weight.

I'm sure your bleeding is nothing serious. Seems to be pretty commonplace amongst PCOSers.

What weird facial hair do you have? It's definitely due to PCOS, that's a given. Lol if I didn't pluck daily, within a month I'd be able to join the circus as the bearded lady

I had gone different lengths on my cycles for a long time. Most of the cycles were pretty random. But I have gotten myself to at least 4 months out of the year and usually about a 2 week period. The longest I ever bled was over a month. I went to the doctor and they told me they saw nothing wrong at that time. I bled about another week or so and then it stopped.
I am new to the board. I've have PCOS since I was 16 years old. This year I turn 31. I am still TTC and I feel like I have been getting no where. I love my husband. He knew what he was getting into when he married me. But I'm trying so hard and he is trying so hard and I seriously just want to give up...but I just can't do that! You have probably all gone through this or have heard it a million times. I'm just so frustrated and may be it's just time to take a break from all of it and just have fun!
