OK i have a question for anyone who has had to have a total thyroidectomy, my mom had one done on monday, she had surgery a month ago on one side the dr said it came back cancer so went in and done the total one monday, well they sent her home w/ no med. everything we looked up said you have to be on med. the rest of your life with it gone so we are very confused they also told her to take Calcium pills everyday but didn't say how much either, i'll just put it this way this dr was/is a butthead he never talked to anyone after the surgery finally was chased down and got real smart when questions where asked so no headway what so ever w/ him, so we are trying to find out our own information, so anything will be such a help, thank you all in advance....

My Mom just had the same surgery 4 months ago. She wasn't put on any medications immedicately because 6 weeks after the surgery she had to have a radioactive iodine treatment. Once that was complete she was put on thyroid replacement.
