i finally got a formal diagnosis yesterday and my doctor is putting me on metformin and spironolactone. another one of my doctors was telling me that my thinking that laser "didn't help" (because my hair got worse after doing laser) was because it could be "new growth." my doctor from yesterday was telling me that, after about 6 months on spironolactone, if i do the laser again, the hair won't come back. maybe after the meds, the laser will help out because the reason for the hair growth will be addressed in addition to the laser actually removing the hair??

I have that too. It's really blond, almost transparent but aaaargh so frustrating! I don't do anything about it as I tried to wax it once I got terrible cystic acne there. How I hate PCOS! I do!

oh my god yes! mine are wispy and fine, but light brown and sort of long. i use one of the finishing touch trimmer things on them and pluck just about every day. i still hardly ever wear my hair up because of them though.then again, i know a couple of girls who have sideburns, and they don't have anything "wrong" with them. so maybe girl sideburns aren't too freaky. i'm on the bcp femcon right now, and i really hope it helps!

Hello
i have blonde soft fuzz on the sides of my cheeks, lots of it but its fair and doesnt bother me too much. I get dark hairs on my upper lip and under my chin, i have them waxed, but recently the wax is irritating my skin, causing ingrown hair and red blotches. My therapist recommended Threading to remove the hairs, so im going to try that next time they need removing, (usually monthly) im also trying Vaniqa cream which supposedly helps slow down facial hair growth, but its too early to say if its working.
I think the hair is growing more slowly and finely though since i started Metformin about 10wks ago.
Good Luck everyone!

noticed improvement in amount of hair on my chin, considerably finer now and less of it. Cream drying up spots and hope it stops new ones erupting.

lisamarie and stacey,

thanks for asking me to follow up. you know, at first, i was put on spiro 200mg and met 500mg, but then i was told to change it to met 1500mg and spiro 25mg. (i have a whole post on that, looooong story, lol) when i was using the spiro 200mg and met 500mg, i noticed the hair was thinner and grew in a LOT less quickly! i went from needing to remove it at least every other day to waxing about once a week. that was pretty cool! i'm not sure how it is since the med change, but i feel like it was the higher dose of spiro that had the biggest impact on the hair for me. in a couple of months, probably in sept or oct, i will try laser again (you can't be out in the sun if you're doing laser...i remember from the last ineffective time and want to wait till the summer is over) and let you guys know how it goes.

ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS?

Also, under my chin. Not a bunch on my chin but under it, like between my chin and neck. I have waxed it once down there and is starting to come back.

I was thinking about electrolysis but am scared it will hurt. I am a huge baby when it comes to pain but am ready for this hair to go away.
too have it. AGH! The annoying hair. I've stopped even trying to figure it out. I shave EVERY SINGLE DAY of my LIFE with an electric razor. Can't afford anything else at the moment. I just shave everything. I used to let the sideburns grow simply because they weren't never a major issue with me. I didn't mind those because lots of women have thin sideburns...but then the more I shaved the more depressed I became about those sideburns so I started shaving those also.

And you know how it works...once you start shaving an area, it's only a matter of time before the granny hair becomes a collection of course whiskers!! And it seems to spread somehow because as you said, now you have them beneath the jawline and chin. I've plucked a few, but they always reappear. Well, at least they're punctual to say the least. But my goatee depresses me the most....ugh. So I shave everyday. I hate the stubbles.

Hi girls

I have had dark hair on my chin and upper lip for years. Used to have it waxed every 4 weeks and pluck it out in between (pluck everyday).

Recently I have started haveing IPL on my chin. have only had 2 treatments out of the 6 I will be having and haven't noticed a difference yet.

Since I went off the pill 6 months ago, I have grown quite a bit of hair on the sides of my cheeks. Think it's getting darker too. I have thought about getting this waxed too but scared it will grow back darker as this hair isn't very dark at this stage.

Since having IPL I shave my chin everyday. it's awful having to shave everyday. Apart from feeling like a man, it causes pimples to get worse, and if you stay at someone's house or go camping with friends or something it's pretty embarassing when you wake up in the morning with stubble on your chin! Yuk...not very attractive.

have thought about trying electrolysis for my lip and sides but have seen other people warn against it. Any more comments about electrolysis??

Hi everyone - Does anyone else have this problem - Some of my facial hairs are almost IMPOSSIBLE to pluck out - it's almost like they're super-glued into my face - I pull and pull and pull and they won't come out - it drives me nuts! I wonder how I can make them easier to pluck out. I use lotion.

JoyBlack: I've been reading a lot of your posts, and I in no way mean any disrespect, but why are you so accepting of your facial hair? It kind of seems like you're not very sympathetic to those of us who are devastated by it, because you're so accepting of it. Do you mean to tell me that if someone were to offer to pay for your laser or electrolosis hair removal, that you wouldn't accept their offer? I think your husband is probably the ONLY man on earth who is so accepting of it. Like it or not, most men are not. Women are supposed to be women, and men are supposed to be men.

I read that birth control pills cause PCOS. I took them for years. How many of you took them? I wonder if that's why we have this. They should be taken off the market, if they cause this. And someone should inform the poor young girls before they ruin their lives by taking them.

I actually heard they help by leveling out hormones and thus getting rid of most bad symptoms

And i have hair all over my body and face. I hate rubbing my cheek and feeling nothing but bumps and hair. NOT my actual skin.
I wear my back hair up but leave big chunks on the side to hide the burns and I bleach all of the facial hair to hide it as much as i can because i don't want to risk making it come back super thick and worse.

I hope to get some med for it and then get the no!no! from sephora for the removal of hair and hopefully get rid of all this unsightly horrid hair.

Birth control (the pill) actually helps with PCOS as it normalises your hormones a little more. many doctors use the pill as treatment for PCOS if you are not trying to get pregnant.

I stopped the contraceptive pill 6 months ago as I am trying to get pregnant, and since it has been out of my system, I have had more facial hair, body hair and pimples. It's awful!!

When hair grows to a certain coarseness it becomes virtually impossible to pluck out. Plucking/waxing/mechanical epilating/threading will work for relatively fine hair but not for the coarsest of, for lack of a better term, "male-type" facial hair.

Sorry, I don't mean to come over unsympathetic. There was a time when I certainly wasn't accepting of my facial hair and was absolutely mortified by my moustachce and the fact that I had to shave every day. If someone had offered to pay for laser treatment or electrolysis for me then, I'd have jumped at the chance. Now, I've facial hair over far more of my face than I had then, but no, I really wouldn't want either laser or electrolysis. I've seen too many people scarred by electrolysis and burned by laser, together with which laser wouldn't get the hair on the areas where it's lighter in color.

My dh is great and it's certainly he who helped me realise that my facial (and other) hair is part of who I am and the overall package is something uniquely me and great for our relationship. But I know that other women on this board have husbands who are extremely supportive. And I would have thought that even a husband who might suggest doing something about beard growth might well be doing it simply to support a wife as best he understood how to -- to avoid unkind comments from outsiders, etc.

What you read can indeed happen. It happens because birth control pills can sometimes cause the body to shut off its own production of estrogen and the natural estrogen may sometimes be more effective at countering testosterone than the form of estrogen in the pills. In any case, when a woman stops taking the bcp her natural production of estrogen may be very slow to restart or may not restart at all, leading to unopposed testosterone and consequent increased hair growth. It might be a bit drastic to take them off the market, but I agree with you at least to the extent that possible side-effects should be made clear. In general terms, for most women, they tend to reduce facial and body hair growth. However, I tend to the view, with regard to myself, that I'd sooner have as little intervention as I'm comfortable with. On the other hand, my symptoms are not such as to make my everyday life miserable -- for many women some sort of intervention is essential to maintain an everyday existence.
