Default Anyone hate the smell of cooking food and have food aversions? NOT PG!!

I have been suffering with this for well over a year but it seems to be getting worse. I can't stand the smell of anything that is cooked in my oven, even though it is clean inside and no-one else can smell anything different with the food. I also hate the smell of stainless steel pans when pouring veggies and things out of them.

Sometimes I'll have really been looking forward to something, yet once it is cooked and I get the smell of it I can't eat it. It makes me want to heave.

I never have trouble eating cereal or toast or raw fruit and veggies ( or suprise, surprise, chocolate or fries lol!) , but I can't live on those forever.

I'm a good 50lbs overweight and have been taking Metformin for about 2 years, although I don't get any of the other GI Met related problems.
I quit smoking 18 months ago, but I had a good sense of taste and smell as a smoker.

Has anyone else been through this? My DH thinks I'm going mad or imagining things!

I've noticed this since I started taking met. My adversion to food smells isn't quite as bad as yours but it's still bad.

I don't like the smell of my microwave. I will not eat anything that was in there. I have no problem eating things out of the oven though.

Have you ever had an instance where you cooked something in your kitchen and then gotten sick after eating it?

Yep. When I first started Met. I didn't have that problem, but I sure do now. It seems to come in cycles, with right now some of the worst. I have a sub waiting for me in the fridge, but the very smell of it makes me sick. Right now the food eating aversion is worse than the food and other smell aversion.

No that has never happened. I'm very rarely physically sick.

I'm glad that it's not just me, not that I would wish this on anyone, but at least I'm not going mad! I see many more benefits with taking Met, so for me it's not an option to stop taking it.

Red face Me too!

Some days I cannot bear the smell of cooking and have to hide in my bedroom. I am the caterer in my house and I'm managing to cook food for my family but then eat toast. It is sometimes the only thing I can manage.

I am off my food altogether but once I start to eat something I can usually manage most of it. Have suddenly developed a really sweet tooth and so choc and ice cream is always tempting, darn it

I am like that. I have real problems with certain smells - food I would normally like, if I have to smell it cooking or worse, smell the kitchen AFTER I've cooked....I can't touch it.

I have sensory issues though, so that my be my deal.

OMG. I, too, thought I was going completely insane! Mine isn't just smell, but texture as well. Raw meat? Forget it! I can't touch it nor can I hardly stand to cook it. *shudders*

We have a pound of lean hamburger and a 6 inch sub in the fridge and both will either be eaten by DH or thrown out. I hate to waste food so much! I have not taken Met. today and am going to not take it for about a week and see if things get better. If they do I think I'm going to call my doc and request Met. XR.

I don't think you are strange at all.

I take Met XR.

I don't like the smell of most microwave foods. I regularly go through cycles where I don't want to cook for the family because I don't want to smell it.

I can't stand the smell of most cleaners so I go with baking soda, Dr Bronner's Peppermint soap, and Bon Ami.

I wash with unscented "free & clear" ALL or Seventh Generation.

I dislike a lot of "beauty" smells -- lotions, shampoo, perfume, make-up, etc.

V.

Several days off of Met. and things are looking up. I can think of cooking more again and can actually eat foods made at home.

And here I thought I was alone in this! I've had to avoid foods. I've become picky in what I eat and I never was this way. I guess Met has something to do with it, but I gain weight like crazy when I'm not on it so I think I'll accept some food issues in place of having another year like I did in the past where I gained 50 pounds while working super hard and eating the same as always.

I find that when I take the time to make meals from scratch I can enjoy them so much more. I can't eat most fast food and I'm probably eating healthier as a result which is fine by me.

The only time I have had a smell aversion was when I got pg with my DS and again with my DD. While pg, I couldn't have bananas in the house. It funny because I still have the aversion to that smell and my DD turns 2 in Jan. Both kids love bananas though. Go figure.
