Default Anyone have anovulation as their only symptom?

My doctor is calling my condition "PCOS," but my one and only symptom is anovulation. Bloodwork is clean, u/s is clean, I'm thin (5'4", 107 pounds), etc. I just don't get periods. What do you think about this? Is anyone else in my situation? Does it mean I have a mild form? Or is this worse? We are trying for baby #2, and I'm trying to think about whether I should try the typical things that might help - like low GI diet, blah blah blah. Does this kind of thing work for thin PCOS'ers? I'm kind of confused and skeptical about the whole thing... Is anyone else in my situation?? Thanks!

I have a very similar situation in that I have anovulation and I'm also very thin (5' 3" 105 lbs). I was told last year that I wasn't getting my periods because I was too thin. I put on a few pounds but still no periods. That is when I got a new doctor who ordered new blood tests and they revealed have high testosterone levels - classic PCOS. That diagnosis left me flabbergasted because I didn't think I fit the typical PCOS sufferer. Never the less I opted to take 1500mg of Metformin and I got a period this month. Not sure if I ovulated but I'm hoping. In your case, it sounds mild, but then again I'm not a doctor. I would definately try the low GI diet and maybe in request additional blood tests. Good luck.

All of my bloodwork was normal except my LH:FSH ratio, did you get that tested? Apparently an LH:FSH ratio of 2:1 or more is a PCOS indicator as well. My testosterone and glucose were normal. I have very irregular periods, and havent had a period since January when I had a d&c for a missed miscarriage.

Default Same Boat

Hi,

Just wanted to share that I'm in the same boat. 5'4, 106 lbs, 27 yrs old and only symptom of PCO was irregular periods...then the ever-telling ultrasound. Have you had one of those? There's a bunch of little pointless follicles annoying my ovaries. So I started the metformin thing (originally 1500/day; now down to 1000/day because current RE thinks that's enough) in July of 2008...clomid eventually made me ovulate but short LP and never pregnant. This is my first month of injections (3 follies yesterday; rootin' for the little guys!), then I'll do the HCG when the RE thinks they're ripe, then progesterone suppliments (first month on those, too).

Doctors seem to think there's a necessary ladder of protocol that must be taken, which just draws out the process soooooo much. I've learned, through trial and error, that only you can be your best advocate. So if you want to take agressive action, politely, but firmly, speak your mind. Don't fall into the trap of "Dr knows best"...I've found that "Dr has a lot of patients and this stuff earns her/him big bucks"...or if you want to try al the herbal/natural methods, voice that opinion. Whatever your decision, please be sure to voice it

Side note - Ever watch the Jon and Kate plus 8? She's "PCO" too...and a small person. Both sets of multiples were conceived on injectables (she doesn't state her exact "cocktail" in the book...but it is rather uplifting to read).

Best wishes!

Melanie

I have a very similar situation. In the past I have only been able to get a period if I was on BCP or provera and it has taken countless doctors to diagnose me as PCOS. It took so long because my only symptom was anovulation - I am not overweight, have excess body hair, and my ultrasounds have never shown any cysts on my ovaries. Since I have been diagnosed my doctor put me on metformin and I finally get periods. I even ovulate! However, I was only ever diagnosed because I kept pushing my doctor for answers and finally went to an endocrinologist who understood my symptoms much better. If you are not satisfied with your doctor get a second opinion, and don't forget you know your body better than anyone.

Hi,

I also have the same problems. I am not overweight no excessive body-hair. Last Friday I went to the gyno and was diagnosed even before getting a blood test. I was shocked and left the gyno crying. After the weekend I decided not to rush into clomid and the whole medical cycle. Yes I have the follicles on my ovaries, however I believe I can ovulate on my own. I've been through stress lately and haven't got a period after February ( a pattern I recognise from previous stress periods, it just blocks everything). But, before, with a healthy lifestyle (jogging, gives me endorphines, I just love it), I actually managed to have my periods once per month. I'm on duphaston (7 days) now, in order to get my periods back. The gyno asked me to have a blood test on CD3 and come back as soon as I want to start with clomid. First, I would like to see the blood test results!
I feel like she is pushing me too much. I hate that. Yes I want a child desperately, but first lets figure out how my body works. I planned to monitor my temperature every morning. Not very pleasant, you have to do it rectally (yagh!). I give myself till September, I am still 31. After that, I will consider medication...whatever there is available.

wish you all good luck my strong cysters. big kiss and hug from Amsterdam.
