i have perfectly fine numbers for my insulin and glucose tests...
i have very minimal symptoms now that i am on yaz...
i am wondering if any of you other thin cyster are the same as me...
at my worst i was only 150 pounds, slightly execssive hair growth(all the right places...just very frequent), irregular periods, a little acne
i am confused- do i really have pcos? i have a doctor diagnosis from a pelvic ultrasound...some symptoms...but is this reallt what it is?

My insulin levels are fine also. My highest weight was 129 and I am 5'5". But I have very elevated testosterone. My last ultrasound a month ago showed true signs of PCOS with all of my cysts.
I am 5'7" ,153 and toned somewhat muscular, but not bulky. I work out 3-4 days a week doing cardio and weights and have since I was 19/20 yrs old. Had some weight issues in college, but that was probably from all the beer and pizza! Was on bcp until aug 2005 when dh and I decided to start to ttc. I have been on met for 7 months and have noticed that I have lost a little bit of weight from my belly, which after i was off the bcp for 8 months had started to get jiggly and bloated, but the numbers do not show that I am IR. I also have mild acne on chin and on legs (knees and thighs), lovely, I know.
Not sure if any of this helps...
What did the doc say? what were your testosterone and progesterone levels? I am sure the doc tested those levels as part of your blood work up...did you go to a gyn or endo? there are some other things it can be, but I suggest you read some of the PCOS articles or books to see if you can relate. See another doc for another opinion....better to know if it is PCOS or something else now before you are ttc. don't be afraid to question the doc.

Hi
I am 5'8" weigh 125lbs and have no irregularies with insulin, testosterone or progesterone. I've had extensive bloodwork done and alll results were normal. I have good skin and have never suffered from exessive hair anywhere. I have a regularish period but I definetly have PCO. I don't have the Syndrome but do have Polycystic Ovaries. My doctor told me that one does not nessesarily lead to the other. I am now 33 and have had a child and I am still the same. If you have been diagnosed via ultrasound, like me, I don't think it can be anything else?? But I'd be interested to know if you come up with any theories.
kid?-did you have blood work for your pituatary (sp?) gland done? there is also just Polycystic ovaries which is not the sameas PCOS and something called syndrome O and syndrome X. to have syndrome X you have to have IR and obesity.
Pinkfish-I am guessing that you do not have PCOS b/c you hormone levels are normal. So, what is the treatment for PCO? What does it mean for you health wise and how were you able to conceive?
avonlady- did you have blood work done?
lucy- I hear you...I have or had before the metformin elevated testosterone and no progesterone, and of course polycystic ovaries on my ultra sound. I also have very mild acne ( occasional breakouts on my chin) and a dozen or so chin hairs I pluck religiously. LikeI said, before it all started after I went off bcp. As a teenager I was put on bcp because of heavy periods and an irregular cycle...who knows if I was PCOS then.

I'm 6 feet tall and 155 lbs. I was 185 over a year ago, but was still within my 'weight range', but near the top of it. I don't have isulin problems, but was put on Met Nov 2005. I NEVER EVER had regular periods ... one or two a year and about 2 or 3 days long and mainly spotting. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months starting October 2005 and then started the met November 2005 ... I had regular periods every month from then on. (my dr had advised me to get near the bottom of my weight chart to see if that would help my PCOS)
The met stopped working in May 2006 right when my Dr prescribed clomid for me. Since my periods stopped I could never take my metformin. I ended up pregnant in October by TOTAL surprise. Little miracle bean baking right now.
It took me years and years to get diagnosed. The Dr that did diagnose me (I ended up going to California to a Dr there) told me that most likely the Drs here didn't even suspect PCOS since I didn't 'look' like I had it. I do have the accessive hair (other than a slight upper lip hair, but I'm Italian so I never thought anything about it), I'm not overweight, no hair loss. I do have acne, but after I started Proactiv, it really came under control.
Hope that helps!
Melody

no met because my doc said that if i were ttc then i would be on it, as of now no. i have lost a bit of weight, but i don't know if it helped my cyst, i haven't had a second ultrasound. if you have any other questions, keep em coming

Hi Amf
The doctor said I have Polycystic Ovaries i.e cysts on my ovaries but I don't have the Polysystic Ovarian Syndrome which is kind of weird because you would asume that having PCO is a result of the hormone imbalances etc? Anyway I conceived my first without any medication however at the time I hadn't seen AF for almost a year and I think it was pure luck. Healthwise the only implications would be when TTC. Since having my DS my system has regulated and I have a 33 day cycle but I don't know if I'm ovulating. My Temps do go up and I do get a positive OPT but I'm not convinced...otherwise why would I have cysts on my ovaries?
Pinkfish
i'm so confused- there is just so much informationa and so many differet cases- i saw my RE for a follow up- he said my ovaries are back to a normal size- and the pain in my ovaries is nothing- i am fine- should stay on yaz and get down to 125 pounds by exercise- do not need to come back until sept for a pap....i feel unsettled but i think it may just be me excepting worse and really there is nothing to worry anymore...
im on yaz
most of my symptoms are under control
im not trying to get preggers at the moment
i still feel something isn't right...it's like - is that it...I HAVE PCOS AND IM ON THE PILL AND THATS IT? thats it? stop worriying and go on with my life...i dunno- is that what i need to do?

It could be as easy as that for you. My Drs have told me that different women have different levels of PCOS ... Since I don't have most of the symptoms, I am a much easier case to control the PCOS (from what they tell me). Maybe you are an easier case?

avon-I understand your confusion, PCOS does not always (if ever) make much sense...that is why it is classified as syndrome and not a disease. My obgyn also told me that there are so many different types of PCOS, which is why some treatments work for some gals and others don't. Some are obese, normal weight, very thin, acne, not one pimple, not hairy , hairy, hairy in the right places, hairy in the wrong places....oy! I can go on and on. I would say to anyone not ttc take the bcp if that normalizes your horomone levels and just know what you will have to do once you are ttc. I only was dx because I was ttc, had gone off bcp expecting that it would take time for my cycle to normalize and when it was so crazy for 8months, I knew something wasn't right, and I finally went to the obgyn.
kid- My impression was that you did not only take met if you were ttc. Basically, even though you may have normal numbers, all PCOSers have some form of IR, this is what I was told by doc. The met helps with that and regulates you period(which protects you from ovarian and uterine cancer), as well as helps you lose weight, whether you are trying to or not(a nice little side effect).
pinkfish-is your doc a RE or obgyn? There are health implications if you do have PCOS and not ttc. So you would want to be positive that you are not PCOS. IMHO. Also, remember with PCOS you can have regular periods without Oing. Which sounds like might be happening.
Melody-congrats on your pregnancy! what do you mean the metformin stop working? you stopped gettting periods? your "story" brings a smile to my face and hope!
Everyone take care!

Hi Amf
My docter is one of the leading fertility specialists in the area and he sent me to a clinic to have extensive bloodwork done. All results came back normal and I have absolutely none of the physical symptoms..no excessive hair, no skin problems, no weight issues. I do however have cysts on my ovaries but I've been told that If I get positive OPT once a month and then within 48 hours my temps rise, stay risen for 14 days then drop and AF arrives then i am most likely ovulating. I'm due to see doctor in a couple of months if i fail to concieve so I will ask more then.
