Default Anyone have this problem with doctors?

Both my RE and my endocrinologist have said this to me and I'm wondering if other thin cysters have experienced this. I am 4'10 and when I was on BCPs I weighed 105 lbs. Since going off BCPs (and especially after I had a bout of anovulation from 3/02-7/02) I put on about 8 lbs without changing my diet and even increasing my activity level. Because the insurance charts say 115 as the maximum weight for my height, when I complained to my endo and RE about my sudden weight gain, they both dismissed it and said I was in range for my height. I feel that they should address my concern more seriously! I want this problem corrected before I'm out of my "range."

Definately! Doctors just look at me when I express any concern about added weight and some say compared to the other women I work with that have pcos, you are considered thin. Ahhhh

I do have times when my weight goes up unexplainably. Most recently while taking ortho-cyclen. Interestingly I had taken ortho-cyclen for two years without trouble. When you gain over 10 pounds for no reason and your clothes no longer fit it may be a sign in my opinion! I decided to work on it myself by adjusting the pills I took and low and bohold it corrrected as quickly as it came. They still don't seem to think it important enough to consider though.

Look for causes yourself since you are your own best advocate and keep bringing it up and they'll have to address it.

Best Wishes!!!

If more doctors took us seriously at the point we are at, then maybe it will prevent obesity and it's complications!

Hi,

I had the same problem. When i told the doctor that i gained weight recently from 115 pounds to 125 pounds without a change in diet and activity level, she didn't took it seriously because they say the weight is under normal range. It is difficult for us to let the doctors know our concerns because we are thin. My endo simply crossed out the chances of me having pcos by just looking at me. That makes it even more difficult for us to be diagnosed in the first place. I think most of the thin cysters face the same problem.

I also had trouble getting diagnosed because I am thin (5'4" 125lbs). I had to go to four different doctors before I got a diagnosis. It is difficult, but do not be afraid to tell your doctor your concerns. If he/she won't listen to you then get a different doctor. Remember that you know your body better than they do, and if you are experiencing an unexplained change, then they ought to take you seriously...Good Luck...and throw a temper tantrum in the doc's office if you have to. There's nothing like an adult throwing a tantrum to get their attention!

The dr's I've been dealing with lately are really great, so when I told my new RE that I gained 10 lbs after stopping ortho-tricyclen, she took it into consideration, as supporting evidence of the PCOS. It's sad that the dr's you've been dealing with dismiss it, because the weight gain really helps complete the diagnostic picture, as well as represents a concern to you. I think it's funny to be considered a "thin cyster", when I don''t feel all that thin (5'6, 135 lbs). But I feel lucky that I don't have the weight problems many fellow cysters do. But I think the reason a lot of us are "thin", for me at least, is because I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 17 and have been on BCP's for over 10 years, which has been keeping my hormones in check. I think I would have definitely had more weight issues if I wasn't lucky enough to have access to some of the best dr's in the country from a young age. But now that I'm off BCP's and TTC, I'm having a tough time keeping the weight off.

I agree with LGSMU1, that if the dr's diagnosed PCOS earlier and listened to their patients, many of the obesity problems that comes with this syndrome could possibly be avoided.

I'm in the same boat with you - 5'6", 137-140, but used to hold steady between 120 and 125. No real change in diet or activity. Dr told me I should lose 5 pounds cause my cholesterol is high, but didn't address what might be causing the weight gain in the first place. The school offers free consultation with nutrition/fitness evaluation, so I'm doing that. That way when I go back in for my followup in a month or two, I'll be able to show him that and prove it's not just me being lazy or something.
