Anyone having trouble sleeping or staying awake? Read me!
I am in the process of being diagnosed with a sleep disorder. The doctors know I have one, but they've been tring to determine if it is sleep apnea, or what they really supect is narcolepsy. I'm sharing because I learned some really surprising things about pcos and sleep disorders. First, that women with pcos are more at risk for sleep disorders. Second, a large majority of people with narcolepsy or sleep apnea have IR. Third, that there are and estimated 150,000 poeple in the US that have narcolepsy that haven't been diagnosed because of misconceptions about the disorder, I don't know the exact stats for the many other sleep disorders, but I'm sure they're high, sleep disorders are very common, and my sleep specialist said there are over 100 types now.
So, narcolepsy isn't a disorder where you suddenly and comically fall asleep in your soup, as is shown in movies. That can happen, but most people just get very sleepy at innapropriatet times (I though I was overtired, I wake up a lot at night, and work is a little dull), also not everyone with sleep apnea snores. Anyway, my point is that if anyone here is having trouble sleeping at night, or feels tired after they think they slept fine, or has sleepiness during the day, please look into sleep disorders on the net. They are very debilitating mentally and physically, and they can be very dangerous. People (like me) just tend to shrug off trouble with fatigue and tiredness, and there may be something clinically causing it that can be treated. Just like with PCOS, when we have that revelation moment and realize all the problems we have are caused by something! I also think it is very strange that we see no cause for IR, PCOS, or sleep diorders, and yet they are so strongly linked. One day maybe we'll know why.

I used to fall asleep everytime I drove, even after 8hrs sleep......it lasted a long time and was completely unexplained, but I no longer have that problem, thank goodness!
My trouble is sleeping and staying asleep in the last four days i've only manage five hours sleep. i'd like to say that this is a one off, but the last time i can remeber going to bed at 11pm and waking at 8pm is nearly 10years ago (and i am not just saying that). Before i used to go days and days not really sleeping and then would sleep through an untire day but now that has stopped and now its just two hours here and there. even my GP don't understand why i can't sleep because four of the medications i am on especially my painkillers which i have to take four times a day should be knocking me out all the tme but there not. and have you noticed how outsiders who have never suffered from a sleeping disorder can be so flipent about the fact that your rolling around the house all night long when there is no one up and there just like "just go to bed, you'll drop off" yeah right. it is now 5.10am as i am typing this and i have only had two hours sleep in nealy 34hours, thank goodness for message boards, history books , dvd's and card crafts to keep me busy.

Syderial, I have Narcolepsy and PCOS. I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy approximately 3 years ago, but I have had it for 12 years now. I do not have Cataplexy, which is the limpness or falling thing that most people think of about Narcolepsy. Thats just what they portray in the movies!
Thankfully I have been taking a medication called Xyrem for about a year and a half and it has been a life changer for me. By getting the proper sleep I need (without Xyrem I sleep primarily in REM all night) I have been able to have enough energy to exercise, take better care of myself, lose 40 lbs and in turn it is also helping ease my PCOS symptoms!!
Its funny how one change can help with a trickle down effect and help so many other things.

Boy, I needed this post. I've been very sleepy. I just thought it was cause of my schedule with college (going days and nights) but this is definitely something I'm going to mention to my doc next appt.
Thanks!
