Smile anyone here had IUI??????

Hi everyone

As you can see i am fairly new to the site and don't post very much, i browse mainly, but i would really like some advice from anyone who has been down the IUI route whilst TTC!!!
Had a lap and hysteroscapy two weeks ago and found that i have a very badly blocked left tube, my right tube and ovary are still in good working order, which is good news!!!

I was told by my specialist that IVF is probably the best option for me so my name is down on the NHS list and it should take about 6 months!!
In the meantime we are having two goes of IUI, as i am very new to this i am still reading all the paperwork about it and book etc....

Would love to hear from anyone who has had IUI just for a bit of advice and support.
I start in about two weeks!!

Thanks in advance
ALI

I've had two IUI's (I did start a third cycle but it was cancelled.)

I had to inject Puregon - a very low dose because with PCOS its very easy to overstimulate. For this I used an injector pen which was very easy to use. I was nervous at first but soon became pretty blase about it. On one cycle I was given the HCG trigger at the hospital but on the second cycle I had to do it myself as it was needed on a Sunday. This wasn't too bad as I'd already had the experience of injecting by then.

They were very careful to monitor the number of follicles as they would cancel if there were too many due to the high risk of multiples.

I had two IUI's each cycle - one @24 hrs post-trigger and one @48 hrs. (I wasn't too happy with this as everything I've read suggests that one @36 hrs is the best - but with the NHS you have to do what they tell you.)

The actual insemination isn't too bad - its the same level of discomfort as a smear. I had to lie down for about 15 mins afterwards.

On the day my partner went in at 8 am ish with the sample and I went in at about 10:30. We live fairly close to the hospital so it wasn't too bad (and he was able to do the smaple at home).

If you live more than about 1/2 hr away from the hospital then you'll have to use a special room for the sample and you'll have a fair bit of hanging around to do while its washed etc.

Good luck!

Emma

I have my day 2 scan on Monday next and as we live over 2 hours away from the clinic reckon we will be doing a lot of travelling especially after the Easter weekend.

Is it possible to dread something and look forward to it at the same time? My dh is really optimistic about IUI so for his sake I hope it works other than that we are looking at IVF.

Default IUI

I know that this is a bit "old", but firstly I wanted to say good luck and lots of babydust to all!!!!

On Wednesday this week I went to see OBGYN. I am having a Lap and Dye on 6th May. She has started to discuss with us the possibility of IUI.

I have a 6 year old daughter from a previous marriage, which I conceived naturally, so Dr's have for the past 18 or so months said "nothing wrong with you".

Tests were done on DH, is count is on the low side of normal, (20 million) with 65% abnormalities, so Dr has said she thinks that our best chances of success is going to be either IUI or IVF. She was somewhat dismissive of PCOS, and said that I either want to be treated for this, or get pregnant, evidently I can't have both!!

How long did you any of you have to wait for IUI? I live on Isle of Wight, and becuase this is classed as a "specialty", I have been told referral would be to Southampton? Do they only give you one go?

If anyone has any info on reading or sucess rates, I would be really greatful.

LOL

Yvette

Hi Yvette,

my obgyn suggested three attempts at IUI and then if nothing happens IVF. So will have to see how it goes.

I am having my first one next week. Dont expect a positive this month as its my first and they are watching the amount of drugs I might need to stimulate. So the first IUI is a learning curve. I would bear that in mind when you go for your first.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

Helen

Helen,

I'll be thinking of you, let me know how it goes!

Did you have to wait very long for your IUI?

Good luck.

Yvette

Hi Yvette

I am just across the water from you, in Portsmouth!!!!

firstly hiya, and best of luck with your lap, i had mine just over a month ago, and it was ok, i was a bit tender for a week or so, but unfortunately they found i had a blocked left tube, but my right side is normal!!!!!

I am now on the NHS waiting list for IVF, this takes about 6 months, unfortunately they only give you one go, and you have to be a certain age and live in the right county etc etc etc

I live in Hants and in Hants they don't give you free IVF, but cos i go to Chichester Hospital and its West Sussex, there they have money for IVF, it sounds terrible I know, but that is how they do it. Anyway I should get a date in Sep!!!!!

In the meantime we are having 2 goes of IUI, we are paying private for this, its around £700 a go!!!!!!
On the NHS its around a 9-10 month waiting list and you get 3 goes.
I should have started last week but i had a huge cyst on my good ovary so we are delaying for a month
I hope this info is ok for you!!!

As we live so close if you want anymore info please e mail
Bye for now
Ali
