2 years ago I was told I was a pre-diabetic. Now seeing my new Dr I have blood testing the day after Christmas. I go back to see her December 31st. She said if my glucose level is normal (80-120 mg/dL) then I have to have the one hour glucose tolerance test (already had when I was pregnant, so I know what to expect) and go from their with the results of that, however if it is abnormal, 126 mg/dL + then I will have to have a glucometer and start testing my blood sugar everyday and go from there.
Recently I am exhibiting Type 2 diabetes symptoms: blurry vision, thirsty, peeing more often, ect.
How fast do you go from Pre-Diabetes to Diabete??

Hi
How fast you can go from pre-diabetic to diabetic is more determined by how you changed your eating and exercise etc...( ie Lifestyle) since you were told you were 'pre'. Then it comes down to the usual questions:
-how old are you? Over 40 increases the possibility
-are you over-weight? - more weight, more stress on the pancreas to make insulin.
-do you exercise? Even regular things like housework + walking the dog is counted.
-do you eat regular meals? Eating properly is essential for diabetics.
-were you diabetic during your pregnancy?
It does sound like you have the symptoms, but you might still be able to stop it from getting worse.

Oh boy, yes my lifestyle has changed. When I was diagnosed as a pre-diabetic I was more active than I am now. I worked at the YMCA afterschool program, trucked around my highschool and went for walks, A LOT more than I do now!
Yes, I am "Morbidly Obese" says the BMI (I hate that darn thing!!!) my ideal weight is 120---well, I can certainly tell you I am not 120 and never wish to be, I like my curves, but I need to get this baby weight off!!
Excercise is limited now-a-days, I sortof live in a bad neighborhood and I dont really wish to bring my baby out in it, plus we have 3 feet of snow on the ground.
No, not eating properly---although I should be.
No, I didnt have gestational diabetes during my pregnancy, although I did have pre-eclampsia.
Jeesh, sounds like it could be then huh??
Thanks for replying!!

I am also pre-diabetic, but I also have genetics working against me too. I have heard that Diabetes skips generations and my mom's dad has it and my dad's mom has it, so I was doomed to get it regardless of PCOS or not.

well I was told recently I was pre-diabetic though my test last week my fasting blood sugar was 80, well within the normal range. However I guess back in July of 2008 I had a test come back at 123, almost diabetic, and that was right before my lap band surgery. I have since lost 50lbs. But after my test of 80, my doctor said it would be a good idea to be on Metformin so...unfortunately I'm only 19 so not very fun finding out i'm pre-diabetic.
My mom keeps telling me that her doc said that I am a classic example of a pre-diabetic. I have a pear shape and a concentration of additional stomach fat. My dad is diabetic and one of my cousins has recently been diagnosed. I just found out that the same cousin is also textbook PCOS. Talk about your hereditary working against you!
I currently am thinking about Lapband surgery. If anyone has any feedback for PCOS interaction with Lapband surgery, I would love to hear about it! FYI my BMI is over 45.
It can happen quickly - I was 'prediabetic' for years - got lectured and lectured about my weight, useless advice when i asked for help (including many trips to a dietition who pushed the food pyramid at me - a disaster for me). I had all the classic signs of PCOS - yet went undiagnosed for TEN YEARS. Then bam - started having diabetic symptoms, complained to my doc. (new doc - moved from Canada to the US) and he did the testing - not only for diabetes, but also for PCOS (hormone levels, fasting insulin etc). N
And yep - I had JUST crossed over into diabetic ranges. so it can happen slowly, or quickly. While I was 'pre-diabetic' for years, the switch to being diabetic happened after college when I switched from biking everywhere for classes and at least a moderate amount of exercise - to a desk job and driving everywhere. :/ So the changes in exercise, combined with diet could definitely have pushed you in to diabetic ranges.
I would get the 1 hour done, but also get them to do your fasting insulin levels too.
Are you on metformin?
