I'm hyperthyroid and my weight loss has been slow. My hormones are still wacky after having Riley. My Gastroenterologist wants me to retest in another four weeks and if it hasn't changed, I need to go to an endicrinologist.
We'll see!!

I went through a period of hyperthyrodism, when I was in Hashimoto's Thyrotoxicosis (a rare complication of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis). It lasted for several months, and I had heart palpitations, very high resting heart rate, and muscle tremors (arms and legs). They offered me beta blockers, but I refused because they worsen insulin resistance. Although I lost 80 pounds in the two-year period that included the hyperthyroidism, ironically, I did not lose a single pound while my thyroid was high! Just my luck, as I had to work really hard for my weight loss.
I'm sorry they haven't been able to get this under control for you. Do they know what's causing it? My understanding is that they usually do not treat temporary hyperthyrodism like mine or post-natal conditions like tnade, unless they continue for some time. But if yours is being caused by Grave's Disease or some other condition, I think they usually treat it by removing the thyroid or giving you thyroid-killing drugs. That does, of course, make you hypothyroid, but that's much more easily treated than hyper.
Hang in there, and good luck. If you're not already seeing a great endocrinologist, I'd highly recommend it. As soon as my thyroid condition started looking complicated, my GP referred me.

Conceived twice by IVF/ICSI/AH, one fresh, one frozen
I too have a hyperthyroid, as well as PCOS. I take Ptu to control the thyroid.
A hyperthyroid causes weight loss, tremors, moodiness, heart palpitations, hair loss, nail breakage, incessant hunger plus afew others i am sure.
You need to see a endo as soon as possible to get treatment.
Hi Cristy: I am hypothyroid and was diagnosed in April 2001. Before going on synthroid I weighed about 99 lbs (I am 5'2" 25 y/o) and I noticed in November 2001 that I had dropped down to about 88 lbs...I looked awful, felt awful, but it was not intentional weight loss...There are many women with hypothyroid who gain the weight but it was like it was literally falling off me...I am now steady at 92 lbs. which even now I could stand to put on a good 10 or 12 lbs. -but it is difficult...I get the remarks of "your're too skinny, anorexic, etc etc etc." too, and one thing that others fail to understand is that different medications have different ways of working depending on how your body responds to the medications. Also, my parents are both small people...my mom is only 5'1" and weighs 110 lbs. which is still considered "underweight" and my dad is 5'10" and only weighs like 150 or so...so your genetics do have a lot that play into it...my body frame is not meant to carry 120 lbs. So, the best thing I have found to do, is to eat high carbohydrates, high protein, high calorie (healthy) food although I have found that I enjoy a 210 cal. candy bar more than some health food that is 210 calories...but, I drink 32 oz. of choc. milk (whole milk) in the morning (or 700/800 calories of milk) which is less expensive than spending $$ for the BOOST or similar. I tend to be a "fast" person in all I do. I walk fast, zooming around at the office-which many times I have to tell myself to slow down, so I don't burn so many calories!!! I am also PCOS (since May 2003) and am on 1700 mg of Metformin, which does cause weight loss so that works against me b/c it breaks down alot faster in smaller bodies with less body fat...so don't lose hope that you are the only one out there losing weight unless you see it causing other health problems...I had my adrenal glands checked to make sure there was no tumor on it causing weight loss, and it came back negative, I am an otherwise healthy person in spite of the thyroid probs, and PCOS...if you want to discuss any high calorie foods, diets, or anything let me know...maybe we can help each other out and both put on some weight!!!
