Default anyone know if?

Does anyone know if eating a lower carb diet will cause hair lose? Maybe I am just being paraniod but it seems I am loseing alot more hair now. I have been doing the IR diet( Motified) since Feb. I have lost almost 100 pounds. I am on MET , take a multi vitamin and thats about it. I will be bringing this up to my DR when I see him in a month but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this while eating this way.

Hi Shannon, I've also experienced loss of hair, I have been low carbing and taking gluc since the first of June, but it didn't start with me until about the end of July when I stoped taking my Biotin due to running out. I finally picked more up last week and already I am losing less hair. I take 1000mg a day, I have been for about 9 months and it really makes my hair and nails grow and look alot better. You can buy it at walmart, 50 pills are about $2.00. Hope this can help you!

I was just going to post the exact same question...my hair has been falling out a lot since I started metformin. I read somewhere that it was because it prevents your body from processing vitamin B12 properly, therefore causing hair loss. I've been wondering what to do because I don't want to stop taking metformin and can't take many other medications since I'm TTC.

Jana, please forgive the stupid question, but what is biotin exactly?

Default Ive noticed the same thing..

I was just doing the same research. My hair is falling out more than ever now.. ugh, its so depressing, I dont know what to do.

I just read in another thread from Maddy about Met.. this section is what shocked me the most..

"HAIR LOSS. Metformin may contribute to male pattern hair loss at the temples and top of head. Although there's nothing in the medical literature to support this linkage, some women have reported that hair loss was made worse by metformin.(24) "

For some reason I thought it would help in this area, Im on spiro as well and it just seems to be a losing battle so far. I started the met and the spiro and the bcp just about the same time in July.. hmm, maybe I need to add some b complex and these biotins.

This is so frustrating, I dont know what is worse.. not being able to lose weight, having a normal fun sex drive and feeling like a pimply lumberjack.. OR be thinner-ish, completely asexual, having a clearer face yet BALD!! Why does it have to be the lesser of two horrible evils?

wheres door #3??

harumph..

Default Biotin

Hey all, Biotin is a B vitamin that helps with hair and nail growth. I take 1000mg a day, they come in a bottle of 50 for about $2.00, you can get them at walmart in the vitamin isle.
Here is some info I found about it on the web. Hope this helps!

Description
Biotin is a B-vitamin which assists in metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and protein. Food sources are egg yolk, peanuts, beef liver, milk (10 mcg/cup), cereals, almonds and Brewer’s yeast (which is a popular source for a number of B-vitamin supplements). Biotin functions as a critical component of several enzymes (where it functions as a coenzyme) involved in energy metabolism (such as pyruvate carboxylase). In the intestines, bacteria produce a small amount of biotin, which may be absorbed and contribute to daily needs.

Claims
Strengthens hair and nails
Increases energy levels
Promotes normal cholesterol levels
Reduces blood sugar levels

Theory
Like other B-vitamins, biotin participates in a wide variety of enzymatic reactions (as a cofactor). The primary role of biotin is in the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. As such, many claims can be made for biotin simply based on its role as a cofactor. The major benefit of biotin as a dietary supplement, however, is in strengthening hair and nails. In this role, biotin helps form and maintain chemical structures known as "crosslinks" within the main protein found in hair and nails (keratin). Maintenance of these crosslinks helps to promote hair and nail strength.

Scientific Support
Unless you’re eating a lot of raw eggs, it is unlikely that you’ll ever come close to a biotin deficiency – even if your daily biotin intake is marginal. One of the most common stories told to nutrition students is the one about the poultry farmer who ate raw eggs for breakfast and developed one of the few recorded cases of biotin deficiency. Raw eggs contain a protein called avidin that binds biotin and blocks its absorption – but cooking inactivates the biotin-binding properties of avidin

Although biotin recommendations are only in the range of 30-100 mcg/day, higher intakes have been recommended for reducing blood sugar levels in diabetics (5-15 mg/d). For nail and hair strength, daily intakes of 1-3 mg/d are linked to thicker/stronger fingernails in a number of early clinical studies (mostly from 1950-1970).

Safety
Like other water soluble B-vitamins, excess biotin is excreted in the urine and virtually no toxicity is expected.

Value
As a dietary supplement for promoting nail and hair strength, biotin may be an effective approach – especially when combined with additional nutrients such as gelatin, cysteine, and silicon. Biotin is typically included in most multi-vitamin supplements (usually in the 30-300 mcg range), and higher intakes needed to promote nail strength (1-3 mg) are relatively inexpensive.

Dosage
The Daily Value for biotin is 30mcg (micrograms) – and amount that most of us get in a normal diet. Levels needed to promote stronger hair and nails are typically in the 1-3 mg (milligram) range. Diabetics considering using biotin for its reported blood sugar lowering properties should consult with their personal physician before attempting.

Lots of people who lose a lot of weight over a realtively short period of time lose a lot of hair. I don't know why this is, but it is true for lots of people.

That maybe why Metformin makes some people lose hair - not actually the medication, but because it helps you lose weight.

I've been on Metformin for a really long time and I got through spurts of losing hair. Usually, it is when I also have a weight loss spurt. and I'm not balding at all.

Also, the change in seasons can effect your hair - like a shedding season lol
