I have been on met for almost 2 months and now i have been put on blood pressure meds. I just hate medicine and i am having a hard time at the thought of taking BP meds although i know it cannot be avoided. SO i am wondering how many others are taking both and which kind of BP med your taking and if it had any effect on your sugar( for those of us on it for ir or diabetes).
I was perscribed benicar hct.

I am not on Met yet I plan by the end of this month.
The BP that am on is called Lotrel 5/20.
I used to take Met about 2 years ago but it made really ill and my sugars where all over the place. I want to go back on it as long as I can deal with the side effects. My sugars are on the higher side (running in the 150's about 2 hours of eating) but I think that is due the stress I have been under.Other then that they still in the "normal" limits. The only reason I want to go in it is see if it will help in the wieght lose. I don't feel like the BP meds are doing anything to my sugars at least I hope they are not . I don't know if that answered any of you questions but I thought I would post.

I was perscribed benicar hct.
Benicar HCT is a combination of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and a diuretic. The former actually helps with insulin resistance, whereas diuretics have been shown to increase blood sugar and worsen insulin resistance.
I am currently on Verapamil (a calcium channel blocker) and Altace (an ace inhibitor). I used to be on Atenolol (a beta blocker) instead of Altace, but I convinced my doc to switch me after I brought him research showing that beta blockers and diuretics are not good for diabetics (both can increase blood sugar and worsen insulin resistance). Ace inhibitors and angiotensin antagonists are now thought to be the best bp meds for diabetics. If you're interested, I could provide you with studies to back that up that you can show your doc.

i'd be interested, if you don't mind. i'm taking hctz & cardizem and i'm IR...so i'd definitely like some info on taking diuretics while IR or diabetic.

Recent research shows that beta blockers and diuretics, the drugs prescribed most often for high blood pressure, cause high blood sugar levels, weight gain, tiredness and impotence.
Most people with high blood pressure have high blood insulin levels that increase their chances of suffering heart attacks, constant hunger and weight gain. Beta blockers, such as atenolol and propranolol, and diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide, reduce the body's ability to respond to insulin, causing high blood insulin levels that increase risk for heart attacks, diabetes and weight gain. Because of this, drug companies have developed newer beta blockers such as dilevalol, carvedilol and celiprolol that do not raise insulin levels and therefore do not increase a person's chances of suffering heart attacks, diabetes and weight gain.
Most other drugs used to treat high blood pressure, such as angiotensin converting enzyme or ACE inhibitors, have no impact on or even improve insulin resistance and help to prevent heart attacks and control diabetes. In the near future, most cases of high blood pressure will be treated with the newer beta blockers or other drugs in place of the older beta blockers and diuretics.
Treatment with metoprolol and atenolol (beta -selective blocking agents) was associated with decreased insulin sensitivity and increased fasting values of insulin and glucose. There were indications of a suppressive effect on insulin secretion during IVGTT; an increase in serum triglycerides and a decrease in serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol also occurred during these treatments.
Finally, here is some info that shows that the newer class of beta blockers do not have this effect on insulin sensitivity:
Many groups have shown that conventional antihypertensive treatment, both with beta-blockers and/or diuretics, decreases insulin sensitivity by various mechanisms. While low-dose diuretics seem to be free of these metabolic effects, there is no evidence for this in the beta-adrenergic blockers. However, recent metabolic studies evaluated the effects of vasodilating beta-blockers, such as dilevalol, carvedilol and celiprolol, on insulin sensitivity and the atherogenic risk factors. None of them decreased insulin sensitivity, as has been described for the beta-blockers with and without beta1 selectivity.

I'm taking Aldomet (Methyldopa) 500 mg. 2 times/day for my BP, as I'm trying to conceive. I have been taking Met. now for about a year and a half. Good Luck to you! I get frustrated too when I think about taking all of this medication. Before I went to the Dr. in Feb. 2004, I was only taking Prenatal vitamins. Now I take 4 Met pills/day, 2 BP pills/day, 1 prenatal/day, and B-12 supplement every other day. My brother-in-law was here over the weekend and saw my pill holder and said, "Who has to take all of this medicine?" I felt bad, because I feel like at 32, I shouldn't have to take all of these. So, I definitely feel your pain. BP meds are especially important though.
I took for a time verapamil, but it wasn't for blood pressure issues, it was related to migraines. It lowered my bp so far I'd pass out. So I did take them, but have d/c them since.
hugs.... I take many other meds though. They're a pain huh?

I have diabetes II, high blood pressure, PCOS (of course) and also thyroid disease. I am on so many medications sometimes its hard to keep them all striaght. Well I was anyways... I am now on insulin rather than the 2000mg of metformin a day and the 8mg of avandia. I also take 88mcg of synthroid and for the HBP: 80mg of Diovan and 200mg of spironolactone a day for high blood pressure. So I can feel you pain when it comes to taking so many meds. I don't really like giving myself shots... but my insulin pump should be here on Monday and hopefully that will lessen the impact diabetes has on my life just a tad bit more. Plus that puts me down to just four pills a day... and for some funky reason... that just makes me feel better.
