Question Anyone on met without being IR? HELP!

Hi there.

Has anyone here been put on Met, but does not have IR?

I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 1999, and had a child in 2002. I'm 5'4 and weigh 142.... not deemed overweight, but big for me.

My family doctor, a useless endocrinologist and OB refused to put me on Met years ago because they said I wasn't overweight or IR. In other words it would have no benefits for me.

I'm going to my family doctor tomorrow again and I want to demand to be put on SOMETHING to help me with the PCOS. Currently I feel like I'm being left completely untreated.

I would like to go in there armed with some info in regards to what I SHOULD be on. Be it Met or whatever. Regardless of being told I'm not IR, it's definately confirmed I have PCOS. Can somebody help me?

Hiya. I'm not a thin cyster, but thought I'd post. I have been on Met for over two years. I am not IR and though I have many PCOS symptoms (excessive weight/ hair, wacked out AF, blah blah blah) none of my labs show PCOS (some areas are on the high end of normal)

Myob/gyn specialist, though personality wise is an idiot, thought that since I had all these symptoms and BCP didn't work and drove me insane, thought that Met would be helpful. Since nothing else worked, we gave this a try and it has been the only thing to work for me.

Sorry, that doesn't provide a lot of info to arm yourself with for your appointment, but... hope it's helpful anyway.

Good luck!

I'm not IR (and not thin), but I'm starting met today. Insulin sensitizers help control my testosterone levels...

Raven- I'm thin and although my blood work doesn't show any insulin resistance, my RE believes that I am insulin resistant regardless as I have a strong family history of diabetes. I've been on Met since October 2005 and it's helped me lose the 10 lbs I've been working so hard to lose ever since marriage. It hasn't helped regulate my cycles or ovulate but maybe it will in the future? I don't know yet.

Maroon- I'm a little worried about being Clomid-resistant. I started 50 mg last month after I took Provera to induce AF, and nothing. I didn't ovulate. Now I'm starting 100 mg of Clomid. If you don't mind me asking, how does one know that they're Clomid resistant? Is it just by taking Clomid for so many rounds and not getting results? Thanks in advance!

Raven,

I'm thin, not IR and was on met while TTC'ing (stopped when prego and haven't started up again since I'm bf'ing). There's been clear research showing that met helps ALL PCOSers, even those of us who are thin and not IR. I'd posted a thread with links to studies in this forum a while back. Will search to see if I can find it (though I suspect it's not around anymore, unfortunately).

In my case, met helped cut my testosterone levels in half (they went from 93 pre-met to 40-something after 9 months on met). It never did regulate my cycles / ovulations (though it did seem to make things better). It may have ultimately regulated me, but I got impatient and used clomid to conceive my DS.

I hope you were able to convince your doc to give you a script for met or another insulin sensitizing med. Good luck!

snazzleberry - don't stress about not ovulating on 50 mg clomid. I've seen women around here have no luck at that dose and go on to O and get pg at higher doses. And, even if you are clomid-resistant there's still lots of other options for you. Babydust!

I do not have IR. When I started on Met I was slightly overweight, probably 15-20 pounds. Well after a month on the met I o'd and had dropped about 10 pounds. The met really helped me, however I have to attribute my pregnancy as well as better PCOS control to adding synthroid. Have you had your testosterone levels checked?

That's great news, Raven! Hope you have great results on met.

Snazzleberry - no problem. TTC is so stressful. Hope the increased dose works for you. Thanks for the compliments on DS.

snazzleberry..sorry it took long to reply i forgot i even posted lol umm my dr just told me i as clomid resistant since we went from 50 to 150mg and there was absolutely no response. i didnt do alot of rounds..just 3 but it was as if i was taking nothing..there was no follicule growth at all..just nasty hot flashes! so he basically said..if 150 has no response..its not even worth it to go further with clomid and to get ready for the next step. sooo i was really disappointed it was a very trying time with lots of tears in those 3 months cuz u just cant help but think it miht work this time..but im thankful for a dr that doesnt run me around in circles and that moves me up to the next step before i start losing hope..but i would say just hold on..work ur way up cuz it works for a lot of women and 100 and 150..just diff bodies i suppose..i hope it works for u..but my advice is that if u have no response at all at 150..move on.and spare urself the heartache of lost cycles..and hang in there
