Question Anyone?? Metformin and BCPs at same time treatment??

Hi all,

I have a question>> Has anyone ever taken Metformin and Birth Control at the same time for the treament of PCOS? My doctor just prescribed me my first prescription for Metformin as BCPs did not do anything on their own for me except regulate my period. I gained weight and my boobs got bigger (they were big enough to begin with) because of BCPs. If you have taken both at the same time, what effects has it had on PCOS?

Thanks for the info,

I'm supposed to be taking both, but am not good about taking my Met regularly. The Met helped me conceive. I'm taking BCP for birth control. I don't really have any experience to offer. I can tell you that Met worked for me without being on BCP.

I am on Met and Yaz. The Yaz was prescribed to stop my period because I was bleeding so heavily that I was anemic and that problem was solved. Since starting Met, I have been very worn down and I am still finding it very difficult to lose any weight. I also take Prozac and I wonder if that is also contributing to my lack of motivation.

I'd guess the Prozac is effectings things. Yaz can do it, too. Add Met, and that's a triple whammy. (I take Yaz, Met, and Lexapro.) Exercise and B12 can help. Met messes with your B12, so taking extra seems to help with the fatigue.

Met + Yaz here, too. I love it. It's great knowing when AF is going to show up (I never knew, before!). I love that I don't get pimples anymore (never had the acne), I love that my weight is dropping (for the first time that I can remember, no matter what I did, it always went UP!), and I love that the darker facial hair has either gone or isn't as quick-growing.

I know some people believe that BCPs are masking PCOS---and that may be true. However, as a 26 y/o single woman, I'm going to damn well be on BCPs at this point in my life, unless I'm looking at life-threatening side effects. Roomie had a non-BCP-related stroke this year, and seeing her nightmare of trying to "be safe"---hell no. I don't care if it's masking the disease, BC is here to stay for me.

I was on met and zovia for almost a year. Met for insulin and zovia as a bc because my re didn't want me to go more than 40 days w/o AF. Now I am on met and clomid because we are ttc.

Thanks for all your comments ladies. I am going to be starting Met this week. My BCP is Alesse 28. I am looking forward to health benefits from both.

I am currently taking 500mcg of B12 every day. Should I be taking more? If so, how much?

I don't know how much b12 is needed. Try posting that in a seperate thread and see what sort of responses you get.

Will do! If it's something as simple as taking more B12, that would be wonderful!! Thank you!!

Hi everyone,

I am just writing to tell you all that I have started taking BC as of yesterday and started Metformin 250mg twice a day today. No side effects from the BCPs but about twp hrs after taking the Metformin I felt a little tired and a little nauseous and craved sweets. I had a nap and had a chocolate bar and I feel really good. Will keep this posted.

Well I am on day 3 of Metformin and BCPs. Nothing too bad except last night I had severe nausea but no vomiting. Still feeling a little sick to my stomach today though. No diarrhea yet but had cramps and had "to go". Bowel movements were not loose, a little softer but not loose. Had minor headaches and sleepiness within two hours of taking met but had lots of energy and felt great thereafter, until next dose. Not sure if the nausea is from met or BCPs as both state this as a side effect. Also noticed like 4 really sore pimples on face but body acne has been clearing up. No change yet noticed with sweets cravings but I did eat a MARS bar last night before the nausea started so perhaps this is the cause. Will keep posted.

I'm a teacher so it's a nightmare as I can't really abandon my classes!!!!! At present I feel sick after I eat and am finding that I'm getting real hunger first thing in the morning!!!

I was on Met to try to help TTC, and stopped taking it around 12 weeks pregnant. I've been on BCP since DD was born, and am just starting back up on Met.

I am just tagging onto this thread as I need the info also. I need to get my diet figured out so that I'm eating well and not getting the bad s/e of the Met.

Good luck!

I'm on BCP and met and they seem to work fine together. It has been about 6 weeks and I already had AF. I'm taking 500 mcg of b12 and calcium with D to help counteract the potential for anemia. BCPs didn't do anything for me on their own and seemed to aggravate fibroids. With met, I'm not having that issue at all.
