Me too. I have a body fat % around 20% at 5'5" and 130 lb (+/- 3 lb). I was Dx'd 16 years ago at 17 (b/c my mother had it as well) and confirmed now by 3 separate doctors. I have always excersized a lot except recently thru pregnancy (now a 1-year-old). But my weight is the same without the excersize and no diet (however I'm definitely not in the same shape!). Note, I have only used bcp for a short period of time ~7 years ago - I do gain weight on them! Also, both my mom and sister are obese PCOS, so I don't know why I'm different (lucky though!).
We conceived naturally very quickly (miracle!) and now that we're ttc #2 having some problems. Just found out that I never o'd on my 3rd cycle of clomid (1st 2 did at 50 mg). Recently came to this forum and since have been trying carob and soy lecitin (for DCI/pinitol) - for about 5 days. Just went to doc and thru u/s he said I either ovulated very recently (CD 37) or am still in anovulatory cycle (from lining thickness). Bloodwork due next week to definitively answer.
If dci/pinitol from food sources did produce ovulation, and going to continue ttc with supplementation only. If I didn't ovulate, doc with induce AF and on to clomid 100 mg.
I was always pretty average, maybe on the small side when we think PCOS started, but not super skinny. I have longish slightly irregular cycles, maybe I'm ovulating (it looks like I usually do, but we aren't sure). I have acne, at it's worst, it's moderate (which is a lot for a 29 year old). A little bit of hair thining on the scalp and for the first time in my life I now have a little bit of belly weight! Before this I've always gained on the legs and butt and been vain about my flat belly.
I had to laugh when I read people's comments on food! Made me hungry! I could eat sugar all day! And sometimes I did, because I wasn't gaining weight, right? And my blood sugar was always OK on paper and no one in my family has diabetes, so it must be fine. As long as I exercise I can live on carbs, chocolate and ice-cream! Oops. I'm eating better now.
I wasn't diagnosed until we started ttc and I talked to my girlfriends and realized that their definition of regular was not quite the same as mine. I'd known for awhile that their pain wasn't the same, but when I told my doc I wouldn't take birth control pills (Catholic) she dropped it and never mentioned tests. So I went in and asked for tests and turns out, ovarian cysts on one side. Who knew? Some how, with the acne, hair thining, pain and irregularity it seems as though maybe we should have known! But I'd never heard of PCOS before I started trying to figure out when I ovulate and since I wasn't an extreme weight, everything was always blamed on stress. I hope you feel better! Reading everyone else's stories gave me a bit of comfort.
I'm normal weight, at least as far as BMI range goes. I was on the skinny side in my early 20s and slowly put on weight over the years. Most of the weight I do have is around my tummy and thighs. It doesn't seem to matter that much what I eat or don't eat.
Like other people posting here, my hormone levels were always normal and didn't find out I had PCOS until just recently (2nd ultrasound I had). Unlike some people above though, my periods are like clockwork but much lighter than in the past.
I'm average too! The only thing besides my 60+ day cycles that said PCOS was my FSH/LH ratio. I was diagnosed in May after lots of general malaise, sugar cravings, nausea, etc. Metformin is doing great things for me because I'm apparently insulin resistant. My appetite has leveled out, I don't have all those awful symptoms I did before, and I've lost five pounds in the last six weeks since I went on it - which I don't mind. Still waiting for my cycles to shorten though, but it's early yet.

Hi gals! I'm new to this site and new to PCOS.. just diagnosed last week and pretty upset, scared, and overwhelmed. I went off the pill in Feb as we're TTC our first child, however, my pd never returned (5 months later... still nothing). My o/s showed cysts; I have some excess facial/neck/chest hair (nothing crazy but I need to pluck every few days... gross); normal weight 24.2 BMI (although I'm about 10 -15 lbs more than I'd like to be); since going off the pill my acne has gotten worse... and constantly feeling bloated and crampy since going off the pill - anyone else have that happen?
I work out 4-6 times a week (mostly running)... and eat healthy. Has anyone heard anything about alcohal consumption... affects with PCOS? or any of meds described above? I'm in Corporate Sales with many evening client events (probably drink more nights a week than I should).
I've been referred to an E/R where we'll "explore our options" (appt is next month). From everything I'm reading.. sounds like Metformin has worked for several of you? (I'm currently not on any meds)
So frusterating that we spend years trying to avoid getting pregnant and then have so much trouble when we want to!
yes me! since i can think i am always the same weight. around 60 kg for 174 cm ( iam 29 years old now). MBI approximately 20. I do sports and eat healthy but it doesnt even make a difference if i dont do so. i never did anything helathy in regards of my weight. my only symtoms are bad acne which is now more or less under control and irregular to no periods. my sister is skinnyer than i am, has acne as well and hirsutism but her cycles are like clockwork. my (male) cousin had really bad acne as well so i really dont know if my bad skin comes from the hormones or otherwise (what ever that other thing could be). when i was diagnosed my testosterone was never very high but my androstendion was. my doc was or still is a bit helpless with me since i dont fit into the text book case pcos. i still wonder wherethis syndrom comes from in my case and to be honest i am a bti tired of all this "you need to change your lifestyl" pcos advices. my lifestyl is very healthy and my pcos still here. I had times where i would party a lot, smoke and drink sometimes too much, didnt do much sports and just lived. my periods have never been so regular when during such times (which for me means about every 30 to 50 days). i wished i could think less and live more!
Hi! Me too - Miss Average. I have basically the same stats as you swisscyster. 173cm and 60kg except I don't do any exercise (naughty naughty). I had my first ever u/s today and she said looks like "classic" PCO. I also had a hormone saliva test which showed elevated levels of testosterone. Only had blood tests today so have to wait for official diagnosis. The journey begins.....
maybe we need to start "average cysters"?? i can relate to most here, never really been skinny, never obese (but i know we all know we could lose a few and it wouldn't hurt!!). i love chocolate and sweets, have felt a little hypoglycemic at times but have regulated that pretty much by snacking every couple hours. i was on the bcp for ages (perhaps wasting money??). got off last year and on met now....the dr didn't think i looked average pcos either except for the irregular cycles. whatever i have, the met has helped!
Hey ladies, I would say I'm pretty average...not too thin not too fat, although in my late teens/early 20's I was very skinny before I was on any pill to regulate my hormones. They originally diagnosed me about 17-18, they saw cysts and I had high testosterone. I am about 5'4" and was about 96 pounds. After a few years of regulating my cycle I maintain my weight with or without hormones at 115. I also attribute this to getting older as well.
It's funny, I never had the acne or the extra hair growth I have very light hair, so my only symptom was the lack of ovulation, which never really bothered me until I started to realize the ramifications of it. It didn't really hit me what the challenges of this disease would be until I was getting ready to be married and thought about having a family. That was when I started the Metformin.

I'm happy to hear that Met seems to be helping many thin cysters as well. I think that'll be my next step if I choose to do so. I was wondering how much it really helped us. Not that it's necessary for me to lose weight, but has it helped any thin cysters lose a couple? I'm 63" and about 130-133# right now. I usually hang around 126# comfortably, but have recently (within the past 6 months or so) gotten up to low 130's and cant' see to get it back off. I'm still not overweight, but I'd like to be back where I was. Actually, about 18 months ago I was around 117# and I felt amazing at that weight. If only it were easy to get there.

I was put on the Metformin to regulate my cycle and try to control the cysts, it has been working to control the cysts, by AF still irregular. Hopefully after a successful pg and staying with the meds AF will regulate. Metformin can also greatly reduce the m/c rate in PCOS woman, so that is another advantage to taking it.
When my doctor prescribed it to me it was in no way aimed at weight loss, I was 64" and 116 so average to below average weight. It makes you really nauseas at first so my weight did fluctuate, but it's leveled off. They've had me on a bunch of other things now with the TTC and that has really had my weight fluctuating from 110 - 120 up and down for the past months. A lot of it is probably extreme bloating/water weight from the fertility drugs. I start my first round of injections tomorrow.
Anyway, I would give the metformin a try. It took me about a month to wean onto them and another few weeks to really be used to them, now I don't even notice that I'm on anything. I bet it would help you drop those unwanted pounds. The initial part is hard because you need to eat large meals to prevent the nauseas, or anything you can to keep the meds down, but once it regulates you should see your weight regulate (if you have anything to lose).
Are you ttc? If so good luck, and good luck with Metformin if you try it. Feel free to ask any questions if you have any!
