Question Anyone NOT diagnosed with I/R and still given Met?

My fasting insulin and fasting glucose tests came back today with no signs of I/R. I'm really confused, though, because I have some of the signs that I am I/R (difficulty losing weight, high cholesterol levels despite healthy diet and exercise, changes in menstrual cycles when on a low-carb diet). I was really hoping to go on met due to its success rate with preventing miscarriage, and now I'm just flabbergasted. I was SO expecting those tests to come back showing I/R.

Have any of you ever been put on met in spite of normal fasting glucose/insulin test results? Is this something I should fight for, or should I just continue with the clomid and prayers!

I was planning on going out and buying the I/R diet book today, but with these test results back now I'm not sure if I should---what do you think? I'm SO CONFUSED!

OMG! That is EXACTLY what I had posted a while back!!! I totally expected to be insulin resistant. I have the agranthisis nigrosis (or however you say it) and Im overweight and have alllllll the symptoms. But everything came back too normal (really, really, normal). The girls on here told me that I shouldnt have low carbed before the test, that it could affect my results (thanks doc for telling me this). I want on MET bad bad bad [b]and they wont give it to me because I have been going to a quack who 'only prescribes it to diabetic patients'. But I go to an endo for the first time tomorrow and I am praying I get the medicine I KNOW I need.

There are MANY girls on here on Met that do not have I-R or diabetes. If you can find my post you can read some of them. I cant remember what I named it. I think it was "I got results-need help".

Good luck-like me, we will get the Met in time.

Oh and I am on the IR Diet, because I know something is wrong and it is working too. Go for it, its a good diet anyway, even if you arent I-R...it is well rounded and healthy.

My insulin levels were on the high side of "normal" and my endo still prescribed Met.

My RE put me on met w/o checking for IR. She said she puts all PCOS patients on it unless there is a contraindication. I think the theory is that all women with PCOS have some degree of IR, it just may not show up on the tests.

Good luck!

Thanks for the responses, y'all! I really appreciate it.

I called back and bugged my nurse until she got my numbers, and she said my glucose to insulin level was 4.7, and that 4.5 and below was considered I/R. She also said after talking to my doctor that he does feel I am I/R (based on symptoms, chol. levels, etc.), even though my blood tests don't definitively show that.

Of course, now I'm trying to get them to answer the question of whether I can go on metformin. I am ADAMANT that they let me try going on met, especially if this first round of clomid doesn't work. I truly feel that (based on my research), I should try clomid + met together for a few months, along with the I/R diet, and see what happens. I hope I can convince him of that.
I am so tired of talking to my nurse today! I wish they would just have my doctor call me back!

My insulin levels were never tested cos my doc said the tests they do arent really conclusive and didnt give the right levels of insulin. He did put me on Met though...I had to ask though.

i did my own research on the net, and then went into my doctor's office with a simple printout of a paper that explains about PCOS and Metformin being a good thing to prescribe....he put me on it straight away with no tests...although we did do a liver-check blood test after a month and will continue with regular checks every 3 months. i just went up to 2000mg a day....

I spent 1/2 of yesterday on the phone with my doctor's office, but the end result is that my doctor agrees that we can try me on metformin after the next round of clomid. So July, probably.

i would love to just catch a break ONCE in my life. like, i'd like to not have to fight for something just occasionally. i am so freaking tired of everything.

I was not diagnosed as IR either, but RE put me on 1000mg of met anyway. He said it couldn't hurt and could only help. I went through a year of many different treatments over a year with RE and then went broke, so we took a ttc break in 12/04. That following cycle on met and baby aspirin I o'ed for the first time on my own in a year and a half. My OB says that he feels it was the met that helped me get pregnant. I did O late...about a week, but so far so good.

So try to get on met even if you aren't IR.

Good Luck,
Nicole

My first OB never checked me for IR before putting me on Met. But it worked for me!

My OB never checked me for IR before giving me Met... and I didn't know to ask for bloodwork... so I don't know if I'm IR or not. The bloodwork after 5 months of taking it says I'm not, Duh, the Met is working! LOL I have heard that they don't do the proper tests to actually see insulin resistance... so most of us come back "within normal ranges". Which I think is BS. Anyway, hope you get some answers!

I do not know the numbers for my tests, but my RE said that all my bloodwork was normal and he prescribed 1500 mg of Met anyway. He said it was possible that it could still work. He thought it was better to start with Met than Clomid and I agreed.

This is my first full cycle on it and it actually seems to be doing something for me. I have fertile CM earlier than I've ever had it in nearly a year of TTC. Crossing my fingers that this is all I will need.

Good luck to you!
