Have you been having the sharp pains for a month and a half? You should probably go back in and get checked out just to be sure it's not blocking the flow of urine. DH has chronic stones (50+ and counting). It can sometimes take a few months or longer for them to actually leave the kidney. He does have the sharp side pains occasionally before they pass but mostly just a dull ache on his side all the time. That is until they actually enter the ureter (Sp? tube that leads from kidney to bladder). He said there is really no mistaking that pain. The pain usually will move down as the stone makes it's way down the tube. Be sure to have your supply of pain med of choice to combat the pain as tylenol and motrin do nothing for him. Thankfully that really really bad pain does not last long - like off and on for 2 days or so sometimes just a few hours. Good luck with it. I hope it passes quick and as painless as possible.

I agree with Trish that you should get the pain checked out. There is no mistaking that pain! I recently had a kidney stone and it was horrible. I was so tired of being in pain that I drank water for 2 straight days so it would be washed out of my system. Gotta be careful when you do that though or you will wash out all your body's nutrients.

As far as pain meds when it gets really bad when the stone is moving the only thing that helps is prescription narcotics (for me anyway). If you do indeed have kideny stones there will be a point when the pain will become unbearable. I strongly suggest going to a new doctor that will help treat you and get you better. There is no excuse for that doctor to let you be in pain for a month and a half, especially without any good pain relievers.

Good luck with it and I hope you get better soon. Kidney stones are the pits!

I'm not sure how long you should wait. I used to get kidney stones all of the time. I had one that was fairly big but it wasn't bothering that much but the dr. decided to do surgery to break the stone up so that it would pass. I really wouldn't call it surgery because they just break up the stones but I did have to go to the hospital and they called it outpatient surgery. It wasn't bad at all, the stones hurt but not the procedure.
