mommy1-I also went to Dr. F at UH. I did 2 cycles and then he wanted me to go straight to injectables. I had found out about Femara and asked to try it and he said no. So then I went to SOFT and got pregnant on the second cycle with Femara and Metformin. I hated how strict UH was. I had to drive an hour to go and have bloodwork done. With the SOFT clinic, I could have it at the hospital in my city and only had to travel to London for u/s.

i'm so glad to hear such good things about SOFT. i did switch but didnt get a chance to start a cycle there yet. Dr martin mentioned something about when doing ivf, we have a choice to do it a private clinic which charges 3000 for icsi, but if we do icsi normally we have to pay 1500. but he said for the private clinic we have to go to the ISIS clinic in mississauga and he mentioned the other hospital mount sinai hospital. where is that..i really dont want to go to toronto, for that..i heard some procedures are done at st thomas...does anyone have any details for me. i havent been able to get to meet with dr martin to talk about this in detail

Did you do your previous IVF's at UH? I only spoke with Dr Martin briefly about IVFw/ICSI (we have male factor as well as pcos and he's said it would give us the best chance of success, though he will continue doing IUI's if we want). I don't know about St Thomas but he did mention going to Toronto. Apparently they have the best stats in the province! I would imagine you only need to go there for the ER and ET but do everything else at SOFT. Sorry I'm not much help. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you out.
Canadiangirl~ I hope all went well today!! Let the 2ww begin!! Best wishes!
Sprite~ Hello! I do remember you and I chatting a long time ago about Dr F. He wouldn't give me Femara either. He didn't even monitor me while on Clomid. After three cycles he said it wasn't working since I ended up with 3 cysts. He then wanted me to go to IVF said he would be wasting our time and money on IUI's. I went to Dr Martin and he has done 2 IUI's (the second one ended in a chemical pg) with me and after one monitored cycle on Clomid found that it does work for me! I just needed the trigger shot! *sigh* Glad I switched regardless of my outcome with all this ttc business.

Trigger shot.....he gave me one. Wow I thought he gave everyone one. Glad you have found Dr. Martin. I get so sick of telling my doctors how I should be treated. I basically tell my family doctor what I need and she is great. Last time I went though she questioned why I was still taking Metformin if I wasn't currently TTC'g. I love Dr. Martin because he knows his PCOS stuff.
The only thing I thought was really good at the UH clinic was that you got to talk to a social worker and helped you deal with the stress of TTC'g.

Hi Ladies! I am in London as well and have been going to the SOFT clinic since July. I have had 8 miscarriages and have a 2.5 year old, we have been ttc again since she turned one so it's become quite frustrating. 4 of our miscarriages were before DD, 3 blighted ova and a partial molar pregnancy, the other 4 have happened since having DD and have all been chemical pregnancies.
I had a review with Dr Martin today and mentioned that I have been having horrible blood sugar problems and seem to have a lot of pcos symptoms even though my insulin level was ok (blood sugar was low though) and my ovaries look fine so I don't have PCOS (that's what I had been told). He told me he would consider to me to have PCOS but he doesn't like to use that term? I do ovulate on my own usually, just at irregular times and late in my cycle so he said we're dealing with that part. My bigger concern is my blood sugar though, (maybe if I could control it better then my other symptoms would improve?), it is always going low almost immediately after eating (usually within an hour, especially mornings, it gets a little better by evening). I eat properly to try to avoid this, lots of protein and only whole wheat/multigrain products, brown rice, etc. Does anyone else deal with that? One of the times I went for a d&c my blood sugar was too low to be put under so they gave me a glucose IV on the slowest drip for 10/15 minutes and it went from 3 to 14.5 and then was back to 3.6 15 minutes later again! The nurse told me to mention it to my dr and I did at that time, I was being investigated for recurrent losses - that was # 3, but the dr said it was fine and normal. I am wondering if metformin would help regulate my insulin at all? It seems that when I eat I must make too much insulin and my sugars drop again so I'm constantly eating. It has gotten worse the last few months and I'm tired of feeling so sick!
I'm just wondering about others seeing Dr Martin, do you take metformin and did you ask for it or was it recommended? I wasn't expecting him to say I have PCOS today so it completely slipped my mind to ask about it, since coming home tonight though I have read a lot about it helping with recurrent miscarriages. TIA!
ETA: I am probably considered a thin cyster, though I've gained 15lbs since I quit smoking. I weigh about 115/120lbs now and I'm about 5'5" or 5'6". I will keep gaining if I have to keep eating to try to stay conscious all day though. Currently I take 3 femara on day 3, we have started IUI, this month we had to trigger b/c again my follicle got to 26mm with no surge yet at day 17, I take progesterone after ovulation, daily low dose aspirin all the time, omega 3-6-9 b/c I read it helps with skin, B100 complex, take a blood test at 10dpo and if it's positive then I will start fragmin as well.
Allie-I read on soulcysters that women who have PCOS do have a higher chance of miscarrying so when I got pregnant I stayed on the Met until I was like 5-6 months along. Maybe you should check into taking Met. Dr. Martin didn't recommend you start it? That was the first thing he recommended. Maybe call the office back and have them ask him if you can start.

Thanks for the reply Sprite! He didn't mention Met at all, he said we've covered everything we can possibly do med wise and that if I m/c again they may try to get some cells to test for chromosomal problems and if that is normal they may test my endometrium to see if there are any problems there. I knew enough about pcos that if I hadn't been caught off guard by him saying I have it I would have asked about Met but I was surprised since I've been told I don't have it. Even if we weren't ttc if it might help keep my sugar levels more stable I would be happy to try it at this point and even if I didn't have pcos according to those blood tests after reading about it lowering the chance of m/c's I would be happy to try it.
Since he didn't mention it I feel like I'm being pushy asking for it, I will when I go in but I want to make sure he normally does prescribe it since I hadn't spoken to anyone who has been treated there about it yet. I'll probably ask when I go for my beta this week end. Ever since having DD there seems to be a problem with implantation specifically, before it was mostly the blighted ova and there would at least be a sac and I would get to about 3 months or more before I would even start to spot so this seems to be something that has changed which makes me doubt genetics, the 4 losses since DD have all been very early with low hcg and 2 of those times the hcg would climb, drop, climb, drop a few times before actually dropping.
I hope one of the nurses I recognize take my blood this week end so I can ask! LOL
I went Sunday for my blood pregnancy test and asked about it while I was there so she said she would ask Dr Martin and get back to me, I hope he gives me the prescription b/c from what I understand it can't hurt and may help. As for the pregnancy test it was a bfn. It's been almost two yrs ttc again, I wish we could conceive and have a healthy pregnancy!
Allie - I hope Dr Martin can help you .. we've been TTC for 2 yrs too .. but just got to Dr Martin in Dec .. this is my first cycle with real help .. (Clomid and the trigger shot) - they are VERY good at calling back .. and I really like them there ... Do you know if you're insulin resistant?
